The 54th Grammy Awards will be held on February 12 in Los Angeles. Tonight, CBS aired its annual “Grammy Nominations Concert Live” special, revealing the list of contenders.
Bon Iver has been nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Holocene”. Justin Vernon and co. are up against Adele, Bruno Mars, Mumford and Sons, and Katy Perry for Record of the Year, and all of the above minus Katy Perry for Song of the Year. Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” is nominated for Song of the Year.
Bon Iver has also been nominated for Best New Artist, up against Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, J. Cole, and the Band Perry.
Bon Iver’s Bon Iver album was shut out of the Album of the Year category. (As was another rumored frontrunner, Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.) Adele, Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Bruno Mars are up for that one. However, it was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, up against Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Foster the People. (Fleet Foxes were nominated for Best Folk Album, oddly.)
Radiohead are up for five Grammys total and Kanye West is up for seven.
Just minutes after the Record of the Year nomination, Justin Vernon Tweeted, “watching the badgers game with @danhuiting. super a lot better than last time we hung out. #notpenisfest” He later added, “whats the difference between song and record?! ahhH! super weird butterflies! thank’s y’all. the badgers are playing UNC. don’t forget!!” and “Aldean is INDIE! I love Jason Aldean. Fucking real country music! Also, Ludacris has never pissed me off. Cool! #backtobadgers”
Jay-Z, Robyn, Daft Punk, and the Decemberists are also nominated for multiple Grammys. The Black Keys, Cut Copy, TV on the Radio, Mastodon, Duck Sauce, and Tinariwen are each up for one.
One particularly unexpected nomination: Memory Tapes are up for Best Short Form Music Video for “Yes I Know”.
