Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker Credits Falling Out of a Window for Lyrical Breakthrough

The Pulp reunion is on in full force. The recently reborn Brit-pop legends have been hitting the festival circuit pretty hard and now frontman Jarvis Cocker has just inked a deal to release his first ever collection of lyrics. The book, which will be called ‘Mother, Brother, Lover: Selected Lyrics,’ is set to come out in October.

Cocker did not become a lyricist in any normal fashion. He started writing lyrics not by choice but by force, both human and natural. As a singer, his bandmates forced him to write words to accompany his melodies. As he said in a video interview with FaberBooks, “It was like homework in a way.”

“My breakthrough really came when I stopped thinking ‘Oh, I’ve got to be profound’ and just started writing about everyday normal things,” he said (in other words, writing about common people). “That was precipitated by an accident where I ended up falling out of a window and being in hospital for about a month. I really did come down to earth.”
