U2 Signs 12-Year Deal With Live Nation

Live Nation Inc has signed a 12-year global contract to handle the merchandising, digital and branding rights of U2, along with its touring. The deal comes just five months after Live Nation announced a comprehensive partnership with Madonna, which included her coveted recording rights.

But Live Nation said U2 will continue the band's long-term recording and publishing relationship with Universal Music Group, a unit of French media giant Vivendi.

"It's not a do or die situation that we have to be involved in the recordings," said Live Nation Chairman Michael Cohl in an interview with Reuters. "We'd prefer to, but it's not always available." The company would not reveal financial terms of the U2 deal.

The deal with Madonna, which included the recording rights, was estimated to be worth $120 million over 10 years including a three-album commitment after the artist submits her last album to her current music company, Warner Music Group.

Live Nation has been expanding its business model to develop more far-reaching and deeper relationships with artists beyond just handling their touring.

Its partnership with U2 will now include merchandise and licensing rights, sponsorship and strategic alliances, digital rights, fan club/Web sites and other marketing and creative services.

Cohl said the new model will help boost the overall company's profit margins. Analysts have said that touring and ticketing have traditionally been a low-margin business. Several of the company's executives, including Arthur Fogel, had managed U2's tours for more than 20 years.

Live Nation's attempts to diversify its business and win artists from music labels, come as the major labels are also trying to reinvent their business and win control of touring, digital and merchandise rights of their artists.

Cohl said his company will focus on signing other major artists rather than developing new acts such as a traditional music label or publishing house. "Our intention is to work with artists who are already making it or on their way to making it," he said.

U2's 2005-2007 Elevation tour is the second-highest grossing tour of all time at $389 million. The group is presently at work on its next studio album with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

Dr Pepper Will Give Everyone* in America a Free Soda If Axl Rose Releases New Guns N' Roses Album, Chinese Democracy, In 2008

*Guitarists Slash and Buckethead Will Not Be Eligible For Free Soda
PLANO, Texas, PRNewswire/ -- Tired of a world in which Americans idolize wannabe singers and musicals about high schoolers pass as rock 'n roll music, Dr Pepper is encouraging (ok, begging) Axl Rose to finally release his 17-year-in-the-making belabored masterpiece, Chinese Democracy, in 2008.

In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Axl, everyone in America, except estranged GNR guitarists Slash and Buckethead, will receive a free can of Dr Pepper if the album ships some time -- anytime! -- in 2008. Dr Pepper supports Axl, and fully understands that sometimes you have to make it through the jungle before you get it right.

"It took a little patience to perfect Dr Pepper's special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love," said Jaxie Alt, director of marketing for Dr Pepper. "So we completely understand and empathize with Axl's quest for perfection -- for something more than the average album. We know once it's released, people will refer to it as "Dr Pepper for the ears" because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds -- an instant classic."

No Wave Legends Teenage Jesus & the Jerks to Reunite in NYC

During their brief heyday in the late '70s, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks never got around to releasing a full-length album. But that isn't stopping the band that defined New York's no wave movement and continues to inspire the city’s art-rock avant-garde from joining the recent frenzy of rock reunions. The hometown heroes have announced plans to play only two shows, both at the Knitting Factory on June 13. The new lineup will feature notorious singer/guitarist/ actress/author/performance artist Lydia Lunch, who founded Teenage Jesus in 1976 at the tender age of 16, along with drummer Jim Sclavunos (who has also played with Sonic Youth and Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds) and a mystery bassist the Knitting Factory is calling “a lost member of TJ & TJ.”

“Also on the bill will be a supporting act from the ashes of the original NYC No Wave nightmare,” the Knitting Factory adds, in yet another coy, teasing statement. Anybody have a guess? Mars? DNA? The Contortions, perhaps?

Apparently, the whole shindig is occurring in honor of No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980, a new book of photos and interviews edited by Thurston Moore and music writer Byron Coley. The book, to be published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., will be available this May.

But that’s not all! For those of us who would prefer something more permanent than a few fleeting reunion memories, Atavistic Records will also be releasing a complete Teenage Jesus & the Jerks compilation in June.

It’s anyone’s guess whether Teenage Jesus will be any good 30 years later. And if one is to believe the mythology, they often played cheap sets of under 15 minutes especially designed to piss off fans. That said, the curiosity alone is probably enough to make me plunk down $25 and cross my fingers.

R.E.M. Brings London Apple Store Up To Speed

R.E.M. showcased its new album, "Accelerate" (Warner Bros.), alongside obscure old songs during an intimate showcase for fans and media at the Apple Store on London's Regent Street.

The gig on Wednesday (Mar. 26), part of the iTunes Live From London series, began with "Bad Day," followed by "Auctioneer (Another Engine)" from 1985's "Fables of the Reconstruction," before the band unveiled its first new song, lead single "Supernatural Superserious."

Michael Stipe, looking dapper in a suit and tie, was in relaxed form, joking, "I have an eye boner because I'm kind of a Mac guy. Once you go Mac, you never go back."

To wild applause from the 400-odd fan club members and competition winners in attendance, he announced, "We're going to do 10 more songs and then we'll all go for a curry somewhere. Not collectively -- although if you're buying I might consider it."

A plaintive version of "Fall on Me" from 1986's "Life's Rich Pageant" and "West of the Fields" from the band's 1983 debut "Murmur" contrasted with garage-y sounding new material like "Man-Sized Wreath," "Houston," "Living Well Is the Best Revenge," "Hollow Man" and "I'm Gonna DJ," which saw Peter Buck rocking out and pogo-ing despite the perilously low ceiling.

A public vote saw "Man on the Moon" favored over "Losing My Religion" for what Stipe called "tonight's one hit song," before the set closed with "Walk Unafraid" from 1998's "Up" and another new song, "Horse to Water."

The gig, which will be available as an audio download from the iTunes Music Store at a future date, came just two days after the band played its first-ever show at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall. After a May-June tour in the U.S. and Canada, R.E.M. returns to the U.K. in July for a headline slot at the T in the Park festival, followed by stadium shows in August.

Be Your Own Pet: "Get Awkward" (Album Review)

SINGER Jemina Pearl, 20, is young enough to be a daughter of the original riot grrrls, although the defiant, rapid-fire truculence that emerges from her convulsing mass of blond hair might shock her actual parents (she's the daughter of Christian artist Jimmy Abegg). Her shrieking self-reliance rings powerful as ever on the Nashville garage-punk quartet's sophomore album, whether on boyfriend-bashing anthems, paeans to juvenile delinquency, plaudits for the party life or 43-second rants punctuated by guitarist Jonas Stein's angular riffage. The forebears who pioneered such rock 'n' roll whiplash have a worthy successor.

Keith Richards doesn't know 'if Mick Jagger shoved it up the shitter'

The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has revealed that the number of women Mick Jagger and himself shared was "a stable" -and has also discussed the sexuality of his bandmate.

The guitarist told GQ that after Jagger stole his girlfriend Anita Pallenberg in the Sixties he made a point of trying to steal the singer's women for revenge.

Richards said: "I've stolen quite a few off of him and, uh, he's nudged his way into my lot, but not significantly. After the Anita thing, I made a point of stealing every bitch he had."

Referring to the number of women the two had shared, he said: "After Marianne [Faithfull], it's a stable."

Richards also discussed Jagger's sexuality, saying: "I really have no idea if anyone ever shoved it up the shitter. I'm not there watching it every day. But there was, at the time, a load of excruciatingly painful campness that went on."

POLVO ANNOUNCE UPCOMING DATES

You may have thought "damn you ATP and your fancy schmancy festival all the way across the Atlantic" after they confirmed Polvo's upcoming appearance at this spring's Explosions in the Sky-curated ATP Festival. We certainly did. We even spit. Then we put Exploded Drawing on and gyrated arhythmically for about an hour.

Lucky for us and our thinning nerves, Polvo announced that they wouldn't forsake the good old US of A. In May, original members Ash Bowie, Dave Brylawski and Steve Popson will be joined by Brian Quast (ex-Cherry Valence) on drums for some kicking and screaming the ‘00s wouldn't even know what to do with. Two dates have been confirmed thus far and there are several more to come. Keep your eyes peeled for additional tour updates.

Vedder Warms Up For Solo Tour With Seattle Gigs

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder stunned Seattle fans who'd bought tickets for a screening of "Into the Wild" on Monday and Tuesday by instead performing a full solo set, in advance of the April 2 launch of his maiden solo tour.

Tickets to the gigs at Kenyon Hall were sold for $5 by Easy Street Records, with less than 150 people on hand each night. A number of fans who lined up outside the venue but were initially unable to get inside were treated to coffee by the Easy Street staff, before being ushered in gratis after the show had started.

Vedder played guitar for most of the shows but also strapped on a banjo for Cat Stevens' "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" and switched to harmonica, mandolin and ukulele on a host of other tunes.

As expected, the set lists mixed Pearl Jam tracks ("Around the Bend," "I Am Mine," "Dead Man") with songs from Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack ("Guaranteed," "No Ceiling," "Society") and a bevy of covers (Bruce Springsteen's "Growin' Up," Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down," Bob Dylan's "Forever Young, Tom Waits' "Picture in a Frame").

Also performed were James Taylor's "Millworker," unreleased solo cuts like "Broken Hearted" and “You’re True,” and "No More," Vedder's contribution to the recent "Body of War" compilation album.

In related news, the guitar Vedder used to write the Pearl Jam song "Love Boat Captain" sold for $8,000 last night during a West Memphis 3 fundraiser at the New York home of Peter, Paul & Mary's Peter Yarrow. Pearl Jam has long been a vocal advocate for the innocence of the men, who were convicted of the 1993 murder of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis, Ark.

A new hearing in the case, which will present DNA evidence defense attorneys claim exonerates the men, is scheduled for April 14.

XM-Sirius merger approved by DOJ

NEW YORK-- The U.S. Justice Department approved the merger between satellite radio companies Sirius and XM Monday, more than a year after the two companies first announced their deal.

In its decision, the Department of Justice had to determine whether an XM-Sirius merger was anti-competitive, or if other media companies such as Clear Channel (CCU, Fortune 500), CBS (CBS, Fortune 500), or even Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) with its iTunes software and iPod music player served as alternate options for music and media customers.

The Federal Communications Commission must also approve the deal before it can officially be completed. The FCC has yet to make a decision on the deal, But is expected to follow the DOJ lead.

The merger would combine the nation's only two satellite radio companies and create a company with about 14 million subscribers. It would bring together Sirius' most well-known content, including Howard Stern and National Football League games with XM's Major League Baseball as well programming from Oprah Winfrey.

Morrison Hotel Moves Into Former CBGB Gallery

On March 27, The Morrison Hotel Gallery, the world's leading purveyor of fine art music photography, will open an exhibition space at 313 Bowery, former home to the famed CBGB's Gallery. At nearly 3000 square feet, 313 Bowery will be the Morrison's largest space, over twice the size of their existing galleries in NYC's Soho neighborhood, Los Angeles, and La Jolla.

The size of the space at 313 Bowery will allow the Morrison to mount their most ambitious exhibitions to date. "This new space will enhance our line of fine art music photography and puts us in a historical space where people can experience some very different shows than at our other locations," says Peter Blachley, co-owner of the Morrison. While the interior of the 313 Bowery space will change with each show, the Morrison plans to maintain many original elements of the CBGB's Gallery, including the bathroom graffiti, an original wall logo stencil and a panel of show posters and hand-bills from CBGB's 10th anniversary that were buried in an inner wall.

The 313 Bowery space will open with an exhibit by acclaimed British photographer and mixed media artist Steve Joester.

Apple Corps Sues To Stop Beatles Release

Apple Corps and Apple Records have just filed a federal lawsuit in Miami in an attempt to stop bootleg recordings from the Star-Club in Germany from being released to the public.

One of the defendants, Jeffrey Collins, tried to release the recordings several years ago before he was sentenced to probation for violating sound recording piracy law in connection with non-Beatles recordings, Apple claims.

The suit, filed in the federal District Court in Miami, names as defendants Fuego Entertainment, Fuego-Echo Music Group, Echo Vista, Fuego CEO Hugo Cancio and Collins.

In a January press release, Fuego announced it had acquired 15 tracks of previously unreleased performances of the Beatles at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, that were made just before the group signed its record deal with EMI's Parlophone in 1962, the suit claims.

The Beatles did perform at the club just one month before the band signed its record deal. But the contract with the club did not permit any recording, the complaint says, and no one with the band ever gave permission to record their performances.

Apple says the recordings have already proven to be bootlegs. In 1991, Apple sued Sony Music Entertainment in New York to stop release of some Star-Club recordings. Sony agreed to a consent order not to release certain recordings after hearing testimony from band members.

One of Apple's attorneys in the current suit recalls George Harrison's deposition testimony in that Sony suit.

Paul LiCalsi, a partner with Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp in New York said, "George said it best." Harrison testified that "'the recordings were a rip-off of the Beatles. No one asked us or paid us any royalties. Kids walk into record stores thinking they're getting something of quality, but it's unlistenable'," LiCalsi recalls.

Apple claims this is not the first time that Collins tried to release Beatles recordings without permission. He was sentenced to three years' probation in 1996 on a criminal plea of violating New Jersey's sound recording piracy law in connection with non-Beatles recordings, the complaint alleges.

Shortly before that criminal sentencing in 1995, Collins tried to manufacture and distribute 15 Beatles performances at the Star-Club, the suit says. In response to Apple's cease-and-desist letters, Collins acknowledged that he could not release the album without their permission, the complaint says.

"Apple does not own the rights to the tape," Collins said. "They're trying to bully us into giving up the masters, which they have no right to. The group is called the Beatles. We haven't used the trade name -- we haven't released it. We just made it known to the public that this tape is available."

The Fuego press release claims it acquired rights through an association with Collins, the suit says.

Several years after the Sony suit, Apple again stopped release of Star-Club recordings after bringing a lawsuit in England's High Court of Justice against Lingasong Music.

Apple is suing for infringement of various common law copyright, trademark, unfair competition name and likeness, and performance rights. They seek an injunction and damages of at least $10 million.

MGMT- Oracular Spectacular (Album Review)

The band’s first performance should have been a sign. While they were students at Wesleyan University, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser debuted as MGMT at a dorm party in 2002 with a set that consisted solely of them playing the theme to “Ghostbusters,” over and over.

As entertaining, or abrasive, as that must have been, the electro-rock duo (the name is pronounced “The Management”) has since moved to Brooklyn and broadened its repertoire. Yet the irreverence remains undiluted on MGMT’s full-length debut, along with a surprising dark streak at odds with the jittery, candy-colored synthesizers and throbbing beats sweeping through “Oracular Spectacular.” (The album is available now through digital retailers; the CD will be in stores Jan. 22.)

It’s clear right away how much the pair relishes the role of provocateur. “Time to Pretend” opens the album with a sardonic embrace of rock-star cliches — supermodel wives, drug habits, island vacation homes — depicted as the inevitable consequence of being so awesome: “Yeah, it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do? Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?” Perish the thought.

It’s also clear that MGMT’s ambitions have grown beyond putting on the most obnoxious live performance possible. The songs on “Oracular Spectacular” are considered and carefully constructed, and as a result, they’re taut, hooky and highly danceable, in a hipster-dance-party kind of way. Soft-rock keyboards flutter around a punchy round bass line on “Electric Feel” as VanWyngarden and Goldwasser sing in falsetto, and spare acoustic guitar frames reverberating vocals on “Pieces of What,” which is either a heartfelt attempt at soul searching or a dead-on parody of earnest folk-rockers.

It’s probably a parody, given the apocalyptic histrionics of album closer “Future Reflections,” but you can’t be certain. In fact, that’s part of the knotty genius of “Oracular Spectacular”: By never defining the joke, or even acknowledging there is a joke, MGMT keeps you guessing while it keeps you bopping.

Update: Gnarls Album Goes Digital, CD Due This Week

Originally due April 8, Gnarls Barkley's sophomore album, "The Odd Couple," is suddenly for sale as of yesterday (March 18) via the iTunes Music Store and will now be available on CD later this week via Downtown/Atlantic.

The set had already leaked online, although that was not mentioned as the official reason for the date change. Rather than waiting for a specific street date, We understand that stores are being encouraged to sell the CD as soon as their shipments arrive, which could be as soon as tomorrow.

"They felt the timing was right to just go for it," reads a post on Gnarls Barkley's Web site. "With the shifting seasons, furtive romantic entanglements and fierce college basketball rivalries, the latter half of March can be confusing. People need to be soothed and inspired now."

"The Odd Couple" is led by the single "Run," which is No. 36 this week on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.

In addition to more traditional avenues of radio and video, the promo campaign for "The Odd Couple" will include aggressive exposure on iTunes, an April 12 appearance on "Saturday Night Live" and "something globally with MySpace that has never been done before," Downtown head of marketing and sales Michael Pontecorvo says.

Gnarls Barkley will play some shows in support of the new album but group member Cee-Lo Green said he's reticent to commit to an extensive tour.

"Believe it or not, I still can't afford to take my entire family on the road with me," he says. "[But] it's an entirely different thing to walk out onstage to the love and embrace of a crowd that's singing along with something you could have very possibly been alone in. And it's about that too. It makes me able to complain a whole lot less."

Raconteurs Album Being Rushed To Market Next Week

The Raconteurs are eschewing the standard months-long wait between finishing an album and releasing it with "Consolers of the Lonely," which will hit retail March 25 via Third Man/Warner Bros. The set wasn't even completed until the first week of March, according to a statement from the band.

"The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised," the Jack White-featuring band says. "We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it's availability, reception or perception."

"Consolers" will be available on CD, vinyl and digital through leading retailers. "Some places couldn't move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can," reads the statement, without elaboration.

The Raconteurs' Web site will offer the album as a complete download in 320kb fidelity. Individual tracks will be available at iTunes and Amazon.com. A video for the first single, "Salute Your Solution," will hit the Web on March 25.

The Raconteurs, which finds White surrounded by Brendan Benson, Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence, released their debut album, "Broken Boy Soldiers," in May 2006. Their move here extends the experimentation of acts like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails in delivering music outside the parameters of the traditional label system

"We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter," the band says. "The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by its first week sales, pre-release promotion or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it."

The group will be on the road this spring, beginning April 20 in Vancouver, and will also play the Coachella and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festivals.

Mills awarded $48.6M from McCartney

LONDON - Paul McCartney was ordered Monday to pay Heather Mills $48.6 million to settle their divorce.

A document released by the Family Court said the judge awarded Mills a lump sum of $33 million plus the assets she currently holds worth $15.6 million.

"I'm so, so happy with this," Mills told reporters following the closed hearing.

The court also ruled that the couple's 4-year-old daughter Beatrice should receive a "periodical payments order" of $70,000 per annum. On top of that, McCartney will pay for the child's nanny and school fees.

"I'm so glad it's over," Mills said at her impromptu news conference.

"It was an incredible result in the end to secure mine and my daughter's future and that of all the charities that I obviously plan on helping and making a difference with — because you know it has been my life for 20 years," she said.

McCartney left the court without making any statement.

While pleased with the financial settlement, Mills intends to appeal to prevent publication of the details of the settlement for the couple's daughter.

McCartney, 65, and Mills, 40, went to court last month to decide on Mills' share of his fortune, which had been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion.

Judge Hugh Bennett, however, found that the total value of all of McCartney's assets, including his business assets, was about $800 million.

Mills said the settlement vindicated her decision to fire her lawyers. The legal fees, she said, instead "could easily go to charity."

"Obviously the court do not want a litigant in person to do well, it's against everything that they ever wish, so when they write the judgment up they're never going to make it look in favor," she said.

"But all of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between 20 and 30 million (pounds), Paul was offering a lot less than that, which you'll see in the judgment, and very much last minute to put me and Beatrice sadly through this ... incredibly sad."

Mills had sought almost $250 million, while McCartney had said she should receive $31.6 million, including her own assets, which the court assessed at $15.6 million.

She had harsh words for McCartney's lawyer, Fiona Shackleton, who was well known for representing Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana.

"She has called me many, many names before even meeting me when I was in a wheelchair," said Mills.

The settlement has been a long time coming for the couple, who separated two years ago, after four years of marriage. At the time they said the parting was "amicable" and insisted "both of us still care about each other very much."

But the split has grown fractious since McCartney filed for divorce alleging his wife's "unreasonable behavior."

Mills — a former model whose left leg was amputated below the knee after a motorcycle accident in 1993 — claimed McCartney had failed to protect her and their daughter from slander, death threats and other abuse, and accused the media of persecuting her. In November, Mills said she had been "treated worse than a murderer or a pedophile," despite years of work for land mine victims and animal welfare charities.

McCartney met Mills in 1999, the year after the death from breast cancer of his first wife, Linda. That marriage was one of rock's most enduring unions, and produced three children, including fashion designer Stella McCartney.

Mills and McCartney married at an Irish castle in June 2002, amid rumors the former Beatle's children disapproved of their new stepmother. The couple's daughter was born the following year.

Autechre - Quaristice (Album Review)

The composer Anton Webern once famously predicted that people would walk down the streets of New York whistling his own music. A bold statement indeed, given the unwieldy contours of his melodies and near atonal harmonies. And while your local bin man might not yet have Webern in his repertoire, the composer's music has gained far more friends as its reception history grows.

Autechre are something of a modern day electronic Webern equivalent. They may not have the composer's acutely concise methods of working, but there is a comparable intensity in the way that every sound, no matter how big or small, short or long, contributes to the overall whole.

Radio play will never be something that Sean Booth and Rob Brown are likely to be concerned about - their music needs to be given time, space and due attention to make a lasting impact. Yet on their eighth studio album, they have come close to perfecting an approach that rewards first time listeners almost as richly as those returning for the ninth or tenth time.

So how did they do it? A meticulous attention to detail will have helped. No matter what your grasp of melody may be, it helps to be able to look further afield for sounds that are barely pinpricks on the horizon. That way the sudden surges of foreground detail come right out the speakers and raise your eyebrows without assistance. Then there's the rhythmic programming, occasionally falling into line as a heavy bass, while other times sounding like somebody pinpricking a ready meal for the microwave.

Initial listens refute the notion that this album might be even remotely human. With deliberately obtuse track titles and sounds that can only be derived from machines, it sometimes feels like the creators are long gone, the music left for a later generation to find. And yet sticking with it reveals a humanity, and even a warmth in passages such as the opening Altibzz, warm synthesized chords the closest the duo will ever come to Balearic flavouring.

Autechre albums have been famously challenging in the past, but Quaristice is an easier way in, and impresses with its structure, its continued innovation in texture and in the way every sound remains vital, even in the course of a seventy minute album. Don't try whistling this at home, but do marvel at its effective processes and the surprising warmth of their execution.

Michael Jackson to keep Neverland

Michael Jackson is to keep control of his Neverland estate in California.

As previously reported,
the self-styled \"king of pop\" was set to have his estate auctioned on March 19 due to unpaid arrears of $25m.

However, Jackson’s lawyer said the singer had worked out a "confidential" agreement with Fortress Investment Group, a private investment organisation.

Speaking to BBC News, a family friend, Matt Fiddes, said: “I know for a fact that he wasn’t going to lose it. It’s quite normal for anyone who’s a success to have a mortgage on their property, because they can get better rates for their money.”

Jackson hasn’t lived in Neverland since 2005, when he was acquitted on charges of child molestation.

Muse might ditch album format

Muse have revealed they might ditch the album format and only release new material as singles from now on.

Although the band are currently in an Italian studio working on new material, the Teignmouth trio have admitted they want to experiment with the way that new material reaches fans.

Frontman Matt Bellamy said: "I don’t think we’re going to approach the next album like we’re making an album."

He added: "I like the idea of releasing a series of songs, every month or every couple of months – just putting songs out there. Almost like making the single a more prominent format, and then every few years doing a best of from that period and that would be the album. So in other words, throw out songs every couple of months and see how people like them."

The Gutter Twins- Saturnalia (Album Review)

That’s not the case with the new project from Dulli and Lanegan. As the name — a wry twist on Mick and Keith’s Glimmer Twins moniker — suggests, the Gutter Twins are into darker, heavier stuff. The two singers may seem like strange bedfellows. The Trees were a psychedelic grunge band through and through. The Whigs worked to find a balance between angst-ridden rock and the classic soul and Motown that’s one of Dulli’s great loves. When it worked, particularly on their 1993 debut for Elektra (after getting their start on Sub Pop), the Whigs were sublime, as Dulli strutted through sharp hooks, serrated guitars, and muscular grooves that complemented his tales from the dark side of romance. When it didn’t, Dulli sounded like an ass, straining for a kind of sexual healing that wasn’t a natural fit. Where Dulli and Lanegan found common ground was in the blues and gospel they both delved into outside of their main bands. Beginning in 1997, Dulli founded a band, the Twilight Singers, who were better suited to mixing gospel and blues into his rock, as he used his tortured soulfulness to key in on something close to the vibe of the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”

Lanegan began exorcizing his blues demons all the way back in ’90 with The Winding Sheet, his solo debut for Sub Pop. He’s been toying with dark, haunting roots music ever since. What he’s lacked on those solo albums has been a songwriting partner. Enter Dulli, who isn’t afraid to stand back and let Lanegan’s deep, world-weary voice take over on half the tunes on Saturnalia — tunes that are fleshed out with the sort of hooks and bridges Dulli has always had a knack for, as well as strings, keyboards, and mournful background vocals. Of course, Dulli’s voice is front and center on the other half of the disc (Lanegan even sits one tune out), most of which wouldn’t be out of place in a Twilight Singers set. It’s Dulli sounding like Dulli at his best. And Lanegan delivers some of his more devastating vocal performances: “Got no mother/She can’t find me/Got no father/Gonna blind me/Little girls might twitch at the way I hitch/But when I burn/It’s a son of a bitch,” he intones against insistent piano, distorted guitar, and a heavy beat in “All Misery/Flowers.” It may not be brilliant as poetry, but it’s unforgettable as verse. And that’s the real power of a singular voice.

R.E.M. to stream new album on iLike

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Forget the traditional radio premiere: R.E.M.'s new album, "Accelerate," is set to debut on the social networking application iLike.

The roll-out, the first of its kind for a major act, will allow fans to stream and share "Accelerate" in its entirety beginning March 24, a week ahead of the album's April 1 U.S. release date.

"It was one of those ideas that was presented to us and it seemed like a good one so we ran for it," R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe said.

He also noted that the way people embrace music "has certainly changed in the last 5 or 10 years. I think you can either go with it or sit back and watch it happen, and I would rather be out on the field than in the bleachers."

Accompanied by an exclusive video of the band talking about the album, the iLike launch will make the 11-song set freely available to anyone using iLike.com, Facebook, iTunes or any of the other social networks and sites that offer an iLike application for their platforms.

The iLike premiere of "Accelerate" is R.E.M.'s latest example of using direct-to-listener online initiatives to present their music. The band recently launched a Web site of raw footage and invited visitors to edit their own video for the album's first single, "Supernatural Superserious." The trio has also been doling out downloadable glimpses of the new material one day at a time via Ninetynights.com.

R.E.M. played its first show of the year last week in Florida at the Langerado festival. Aside from mixing old favorites with a large sampling from "Accelerate," Stipe revealed his presidential candidate of choice by sporting a Barack Obama t-shirt.

Paul McCartney Signs $400 Million iTunes Deal For The Beatles Catalog (Updated News)

Finally! Paul McCartney has signed a $400 million deal, which will see the Beatles catalog make its way to iTunes, at long last.

Though McCartney will probably make off with the lion's share of the cash sum, Ringo Starr and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison will also benefit. Michael Jackson, EMI and Sony will also be paid, as they each own a share in the back catalog. McCartney may actually have to pay out a little more on his divorce settlement because of the deal. How that works is anyone's guess, but you gotta feel sorry for him; having to share all those millions is just plain malicious. When the albums will actually hit iTunes is not yet confirmed, but we'll keep you up to speed with any banging of Maxwell's silver hammer.

Duffy - Rockferry (Album Review)

The problem with female solo singers post-Winehouse is that they can be split into two distinct groups. There’s the twee acoustic-led “light stuff” that has been released by Katie Melua, KT Tunstall, Kate Nash (plus probably a few more with the same first name…), Norah Jones, Corrine Bailey Rae, Amy McDonald, Delta Goodrem at al. And, to contrast, there’s the deep growly singers who sound like they really mean what they sing; they sound like they’ve experienced hardships. They’ve lived. They might not neccesarily have lived long but they sure have lived. Winehouse soundalike Adele fits into this second category, because of her rich soul-fuelled world-weary voice.

23-year old Welsh newcomer Duffy seemlessly skims between these two divisions. She has a soaring Northern soul groove in her voice but, at the same time, it’ll somehow sit quite easily on mainstream radio stations. Her debut album ‘Rockferry’ doesn’t have a purely pop sensibility but I can guarantee that Duffy won’t be dismissed as quaint. Lead single ‘Rockferry’ has an elegant blues vibe to it, and as she hypnotically intones “Not that kind / Rockferry” over and over again, the goosebumps are out in full force and the hairs are standing to attention: it’s a rather special moment the first time you hear it.

You don’t need to cherish this effervescent feeling though, because the album is full of this kind of thing. Second single ‘Mercy’ has, at the time I write this, been at the top of the UK Singles Chart for 2 weeks which, since her amazing appearance on Jools Holland’s Hootennany New Years Eve 2007 show (seek out her beautifully tender version of Cat Stevens’ ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest’ on youtube if you can), seems like such a big step for Duffy but I can’t imagine that she won’t be able to cope; she comes off in interviews as very down-to-earth and unaffected by her new-found fame and the media spotlight.

The subdued shimmying chorus of ‘Stepping Stone’ is a delight, as Duffy’s states “But I’ll never be your stepping stone / Take it all or leave me alone / I will never be your stepping stone / I’m standing upright on my own”. Devious men have obviously messed this gal around before but now she’s not taking it anymore. Comparisons with Dusty Springfield are ubiquitous but with good reason (and it’s not exactly a criticism, is it?) on album standout ‘Warwick Avenue’ and elsewhere we find just the right balance of plaintive melancholy (‘Distant Dreamer’ is a brilliantly understated and broody piece of work) without heading into a horribly depressive cul-de-sac. ‘Syrup & Honey’ sounds like 60’s Lulu and the instrumentation on many tracks have an almost Clannad-style mystique. If there’s any justice in the world, Duffy will be as popular and sell as many albums as Dido, but without being so dire.

Gnarls Barkley Edits Video For U.K. Airplay

Gnarls Barkley's "Run" video is safely on the air in the U.K. after initially failing the Harding Test -- guidelines established to prevent TV images from triggering epileptic seizures.

The problem was the clip's strobe effects, and group member Cee-Lo Green says Gnarls had no problem making some edits to ensure airplay. The unedited clip has been airing on the U.S. edition of MTV since late last week.

"It seemed justifiable to hesitate a bit to make sure it didn't result in something severe," he tells Billboard.com. "We just focused on any compromise we could come to. We didn't get too agitated -- we just concentrated our focus on how we could resolve the problem."

"Run" centers around the fictional public access TV show "City Vibin'" and is set in the early '90s. Justin Timberlake appears as the host of the program, on which Green and fellow Gnarls Barkley principal Danger Mouse perform the track.

With its new album, "The Odd Couple," nearing its April 8 release date via Downtown/Atlantic, Gnarls Barkley are about to shoot a video for the second single, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul."

Beatles' catalog coming online at long last?

Word on the street (and by street, we mean mostly British tabloids) is that Paul McCartney's deal to sell the Beatles back-catalog is done, and the Greatest Works of Musical Art Ever Recorded will be appearing on the iTunes store "within months." Of course, we've been hearing whispers about this for what seems like a million years, and since both Apple Corps and Apple are delivering "no comment" and "rumor and speculation" responses on the topic, we won't get too excited. Still, there does seem to be some serious movement on this front, with everyone and their mother saying the lot is to be sold any day now for around $400 million -- which is no small sum. We will, of course, keep you abreast of any developments which will lead to you stocking your music players with the Fab Four's work.

Tom Waits announces summer tour plans

Tom Waits, he of the gravel voice and source material for an upcoming Scarlett Johansson cover album, is preparing for a tour this summer, his camp confirmed this week.

But don’t rush out to your local ticket office just yet. Waits and his management team are still piecing the tour schedule together, so no dates or cities have been announced. Organizers could only confirm that the tour would hit both the U.S. and Europe.

Waits’ fans certainly have reason to be excited, as his tours have been few and far between lately. His last outing was an eight-date U.S. tour two years ago in support of his three-disc album Orphans.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks:: Real Emotional Trash (Album Review)

I haven't even listened to ten minutes yet* of the newest release from Stephen Malkmus, and I can make this bold assessment: it's unfair. It's not fair how biased I am toward anything Stevie (that's how he signed his name on my copy of his debut); it's not fair how much talent this man reeks; it's unfair how effortlessly cool his slacker vocals and bluesy guitar licks are. If all in love is fair, than Stephen Malkmus is the poster boy for musical love a, er, unfairs.

After all, his pre-solo get-up, a Stockton rock band named Pavement, was always the outfit du jour of tastemakers. For the better part of that watershed decade, the Nineties, they were the not-so-secret little band that was always better than whatever band everyone was currently in love with. But unlike a sordid Plan B, Pavement were the real deal. More sardonic, off-kilter, musically daring, and engaging than your main squeeze could purport to be. Yet! They never achieved the main street status of R.E.M., Nirvana, Green Day and hordes of others. Pavement rode in the sidecar, but somehow managed to steer, swerve and crash the damn thing. And their five albums prove what an awesome ride it was.

Back to Mr. Malkmus, and his esteemed solo career. Real Emotional Trash is his fourth release, in a prolific post-Pavement run. Natch, the forty-something indie statesman sounds like he's having more fun continuing to rock than raising cute kids in Portland. Songs go on for as long as they damn well please. Guitar and keyboard riffs are as sinewy as anything by a brother Allman. And that voice, that higher-education voice of a generation, feels as welcome as an honorary degree, and definitely as ironic. How does it compare to his previous three records - or eight, if you count his former band? Suffice it to say that's a rhetorical question. If Joe DiMaggio made albums… well you get the point.

His terrific backing band, the effeminate Jicks, somehow manage to sound eerily like Pavement. Ah, and therein lies the puzzle piece: Pavement were a raucous band indeed, but foremost they were players of songs, and it's the songs of Malkmus that carried the flag then, and capture the flag now. The topics, as clear as Southern California smog; their modal chord progressions, as twangy as tang; the surprising details that keep the listener off-balance. This is the stuff that Malkmus paves his musical roads with, and apparently it's here to stay. Like fellow indie rainmaker Britt Daniel of Spoon, this traction doesn't wallow around in ruts. It's so sharp, it cuts right through.
*Unlike writers from certain "men's magazines," I indeed listened to this whole album. A lot.

Beasties Rock NYC Benefit, Hit The Studio

The Beastie Boys and Moby performed to a sold-out audience at New York's Terminal 5 last night (March 4) for a charity show in conjunction with MTV and VH1. Proceeds benefited the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, a cause introduced to the Beasties through a relative of Mike D's.

Moby has been a longtime supporter of the Institute, which studies and uses music as a medium for healing. "Hopefully we have a positive effect..." Mike D joked.

The benefit is one of only three shows the recent Grammy winners have planned for now. They head to Florida for the Langerado Music Festival on Friday (March 7) and cross the border the following day for the MX Beat Soundfest in Mexico City.

After finishing the shows, the Beastie Boys are planning to return to the studio to continue work on a new effort. But fans shouldn't get their hopes up to
