JESSE SYKES & THE SWEET HEREAFTER:: Like, Love, Lust & the Open Halls of the Soul

Heavy metal has nothing on dark Americana music when it comes to creating an atmosphere of brooding intensity. It's been something of a specialty over the years for Jesse Sykes, and she excels at it on her third album.

Although these 12 new rootsy songs feature brawny electric-guitar solos and swirling organ, Sykes' voice is always the true focal point. It's a parched instrument that rarely rises above a dusty murmur on "The Air Is Thin" and rings out with world-weary force over growling guitar parts on "LLL."

It's a voice well-suited to downhearted subject matter, which is another of Sykes' specialties. Characters in her songs are always leaving or about to leave. Cold raindrops fall, hard memories linger, and isolation seems like the rule rather than the exception. There are moments of redemption, too, such as bravely accepting the consequences of one's actions on "Aftermath" and her vision of musical and societal contentment on "I Like the Sound," which echoes the sound of late-'60s pop, the Mamas and the Papas-style.

There is occasional resemblance here to the drowsy Memphis vibe on Cat Power's 2006 album, "The Greatest," but Sykes' tour the soul is both grittier and spookier.

Sebadoh launches reunion tour tonight in San Diego

The classic Sebadoh line-up of Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney and Jason Loewenstein has re-united and will kick off its first US tour in 14 years tonight in San Diego. The band’s line-up changed quite frequently over the years, but the trio of Barlow / Gaffney / Loewenstein was responsible for the classic 90s albums III, Bubble and Scrape and Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock. All three members contributed their own unique songwriting styles and also switched instruments frequently, which they will also do on this tour. III, which is considered by many to be the band’s definitive album, got the deluxe re-issue treatment courtesy of the Domino label last year. Domino has also announced plans to re-issue the Barlow / Gaffney-penned album The Freed Man later in 2007. Expect a set list drawing from all eras of Sebadoh’s existence.

Explosions in the Sky:: All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (Album Review)

Austin, Texas's post-rock dream-weavers Explosions in the Sky have long been beloved of anyone who values adventure over three chords. Typically, their fourth album is a staggering piece of sonic theatre which lives up to their name by dint of its shimmering guitars and sabre-toothed noise. Trouble is, save for the soft bits being softer and the hard bits being harder, it's practically a replica of its predecessors. It's not what you expect from a band that value exploration, but then who cares, frankly, when the result is this inspired?

Trans Am:: Sex Change (Album Review)

Trans Am has always been a predominantly instrumental band that plays ironic sounds unironically. They're a perfect example of a modern "cult" band; they have a large following and make most of their money touring, existing largely outside the weblog-and-myspace-driven word of mouth which propels most indie-label, rock-based music these days. The group consciously limited their sound this time around, after taking a two year hiatus. Change was recorded in Auckland, New Zealand at a recording school with equipment on loan by the brilliant Chris Knox, then later in Brooklyn at Oneida's headquarters without their usual array of vocoders or any of their regular gear. Easily their best album since 2000's Red Line, Sex Change is typically eclectic but pushes their sound further towards '70s stadium prog, keyboard-driven Krautrock, shredding '80s rock, John Carpenter soundtracks from the late 1970s, super clean and mellow funk-rock, and whatever you call the kind of music they play behind sports play-by-plays. Morrissey to tour US starting in April

After teasing us with Pasadena and Chicago dates, Morrissey is finally ready to embark on a full North American tour! Details are still coming in, but what we know so far is that he will begin on April 27, with a total of forty dates. The actual dates and locations will be announced in a couple of weeks, as will the ticket prices. We also know that tickets for every stop on the tour will go on sale the same day, so expect mass hysteria as Moz fans scramble to snag theirs.

The only other bit of news we know right now is that Kristeen Young, who is signed to Mozzer's Attack Records, will be opening throughout the entire forty-date tour. Stay tuned for more!

Van Valen reunion tour CANCELLED.

Was it too good to be true? Pollstar is reporting that the much-hyped Van Halen reunion tour with David Lee Roth has already fallen through and is now “officially postponed infinitely.” Sources tell the tour magazine that a tour announcement may have not been far off, and just last week, Rolling Stone posted excerpts from an upcoming interview with Roth about the reunion, which is slated for its next issue. The magazine’s Web site also unveiled the first-ever group shot of the current lineup of the band, including Eddie Van Halen, his brother Alex on drums and his son Wolfgang on bass.

Sources also tell Denver’s Rocky Mountain News that Van Halen’s performance at next month’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony may also be in jeopardy too.

Roth told Rolling Stone the band had been rehearsing together again and their chemistry is currently “combustible,” though with today’s news, it appears that combustion may have actually happened between Roth and the Van Halen family.

Van Halen was expected to do a full, 40 city tour this summer.

Peter, Bjorn & John:: Writer's Block (US Bonus Version) (Album Review)

Peter Bjorn and John's third album deserves every bit of attention and hype it's received, from large media outlets right down to the lowliest blog. It's a major work of post-everything indie rock that has enough hooks, production genius, and emotional strength to make other rock acts (indie or otherwise) sound like they are just wasting everyone's time. The group's previous two albums were excellent power pop records with an excess of brains and style, whereas Writer's Block scales back the guitars in favor of subtler arrangements that deliver just as much power sonically and ups the stakes in every other way. Every song has that kind of stripped-down, well-thought-out, whatever-works production style that brings the music fully to life. Check the steel drums on "Let's Call It Off," the shh-shh-shh percussion on "The Chills," or the majestic tubular bells of "Roll the Credits" for Spectorian shoegaze production magic. Or look at the infectious single "Young Folks" for the key to why the record sounds so right. Here they added the whistling as a marker for a future instrument but realized the off-handed whistle was just what the song needed. These are the decisions that make for greatness. Sure, the songs would have worked fine with just guitar-bass-drums backing, but the arrangements are like huge hooks that catch you and won't let go. The band also isn't content to stick to a formula. From the reverberating New Order sound of "Up Against the Wall," the small group balladry of "Poor Cow," and dynamic indie rock hum of "Objects of My Affection" to the austere synth pop of "Amsterdam," each song has a unique feel that adds up to an album that works as a whole as well as a collection of great songs.

While the sound of Writer's Block is varied, the lyrical content is pretty black-and-white, focusing on the highs and (mostly) lows of romance. On the high side there's the giddy us-against-the-world "Young Folks," which is as nice a love ballad as you'll hear anywhere. Victoria Bergsman and Peter Moren's duet is enough to warm the heart of even the grumpiest romance snob. The lilting "Paris 2004," which features the perfectly sweet line "while I'm sleeping you paint a ring on my finger with your black marker pen," is also heartbreakingly romantic. The lows are as low as the highs are high. You have lovers about to break up ("Let's Call It Off," "Up Against the Wall," and "Roll the Credits"), guys feeling wistful as hell ("The Chills"), and absolutely desolate heartache ("Objects of My Affection"). Without the love songs, this would have been a very bleak listen; as it is, the balance is just right. It's pretty rare for a band to get better after being together as long as PB&J. Usually they peter out quickly and start releasing retreads or desperate attempts to make a statement or keep a record deal. Writer's Block is the work of a band at the absolute peak of its writing and performing skill. It's hard to imagine Peter Bjorn and John getting better than this. Hopefully they will, but if not, they'll always have this album to call their masterpiece. [Writer's Block was issued in the U.S. with a bonus disc containing some nice extras like the original mix without steel drums of "Let's Call It Off," a couple of non-LP songs, remixes of "Young Folks" and "All Those Expectations" (a song from Falling Out), and a fun version of "Young Folks" with Peter playing the melody on sitar ("Sitar Folks"). It's not essential listening, but it makes for a nice addition to the album.]

Kristen Hersh:: Learn to Sing Like a Star (Album Review)

Her seventh solo album in the books, Kristin Hersh now has a body of work stretching back two decades to when her band Throwing Muses tossed the angst-ridden teenager directly into the indie-rock spotlight. Hersh has made great personal strides since branching off on her own, each record of engaging pop music serving as a reflective document of her impulsive lifestyle, each song allowing her voice to grow from young and girlish to broadly mature. She plays most of the instruments on all 14 songs, several of which deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (Hersh once lived in New Orleans) and a personal misfortune in her own home. Heartbreak practically drips from Hersh's voice when she vows that "getting up is what hurts" in the commanding rocker "Day Glow" or admits that "nervous energy keeps us busy" in the pensive "Ice." As usual, the turbulently talented musician picks herself off the mat with the self-deprecating instrumental "Christian Hearse," the Nirvana-like "Under the Gun," and "Winter," complete with tubular bells, strings, and an Irish-tinged chorus that is as triumphant as the artist herself. --Scott Holter

Field Music:: Tones of Town (Album Review)

Everyone who thought they had this Sunderland trio sussed via their 2005 debut will have to think again. Tones Of Town further underlines the Brewis brothers’ sharply intelligent and emotionally engaged songwriting talents, but also reveals them as naturally athletic shapeshifters. The odd string flourish is still in evidence, but Beach Boys-styled chamber pop no longer dominates. Rather, there are off-centre, post-hardcore workouts and plenty of edgy but polished, pop fusion pieces, which suggest The Futureheads transplanted to 70s West Coast America. A truly brilliant manoeuvre, as it happens. (Sharon O'Connell UK)

The Police Perform "Roxanne" At The Grammys 2007

The Police Reunion Tour News UPDATED WITH TOUR DATES!!

UPDATED TOUR NEWS::
The Police will kick off their first tour in 23 years in Vancouver on May 28, it was confirmed today (February 12).

The three-piece revealed their plans at a press conference at the Los Angeles venue Whisky A Go Go, just a day after performing their classic hit 'Roxanne' at the Grammy Awards.

The group's first jaunt since the 1984 'Synchronicity' tour will start at the GM Arena in Vancouver, the Canadian city where the band are currently rehearsing.

After a string of dates in Canada, the band will head down to the USA for shows throughout June and July, including a slot at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee on June 16.

The dates announced so far are:

Vancouver GM Place (May 28)
Seattle Key Arena (June 6)
Denver Pepsi Center (9)
Las Vegas MGM Garden Arena (15)
Bonnaroo Festival (16)
Phoenix US Airwaves Arena (18)
Dallas American Airlines Center (26)
New Orleans Arena (June 30)
St Louis Scottrade Center (July 2)
Toronto Air Canada Center (22)
Montreal Bell Centre (25)
Boston Fenway Park (28)
New York Madison Square Garden (August 1,3)

Additional North American concert dates in Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Edmonton, Hartford, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Tampa, San Francisco, Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Washington/Baltimore area will be announced in the next few weeks. Dates in Europe will be announced in about a month.

------ORIGINAL POST------
In what is destined to be an historic run, the Police will embark on their first tour in 23 years, beginning May 28 at the GM Arena in Vancouver. As part of a tour that will play arenas and stadiums internationally through the end of the year, the band will also headline the June 16 date of the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn.

As expected, the tour will be produced worldwide by the Next Adventure in association with RZO Entertainment, under the direction of Arthur Fogel, president of TNA and chairman of global music for TNA parent Live Nation. Further details of the tour will be announced today (Feb. 12) during a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, Calif.

The announcement comes in the wake of the Police's dynamic performance of "Roxanne" last night to open the Grammy Awards on CBS. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are the Police and we're back," Sting shouted as the group kicked into the song.

Talk of a Police 30th anniversary tour has been rampant in the previous weeks. Sources close to the tour exclusively tell Billboard.com that the plan is for the Police to tour North America through the first week of August, then play the U.K. and Europe, returning to North America in late October.

The rest of the world will follow, including Mexico, South America, Japan and possibly Australia and New Zealand through the end of the year. About 80 shows are currently on the books, including 24 cities in North America. There also is the possibility that the Police will play several stadiums both in the U.S. and abroad, but as of now Fenway Park in Boston is the only confirmed stadium date. No festivals other than Bonnaroo are currently planned.

Best Buy is the North American sponsor of the tour. Tickets will be scaled primarily at $225, $90 and $50. Tickets for Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal will go on sale Feb. 17. Other markets, including Boston and New York, will go on sale Feb. 20. Ticketmaster will orchestrate a pre-sale through a newly created Police tour website a few days prior to the general public onsales. It is highly likely that the Police will be the top-grossing tour of 2007.

Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland split in 1984 following the release of their most successful album, "Synchronicity," although they regrouped for a handful of concerts in 1986 before breaking up for good.

The Police's lone public performance prior to the Grammys was at the band's 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group also played an impromptu set at Sting's 1992 wedding to Trudie Styler.

Sondre Lerche:: Phantom Punch (Album Review)

On 2006's jazzy Duper Sessions, Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche staked his claim as a cabaret tunesmith. This time out, he evokes '80s Britpop at its zenith, with Duran Duran-ish guitars and synths underpinning lyrically self-aware ditties like the title track. Quavering but sturdy, his tenor finds tenderness, longing, and regret in such downbeat acoustic gems as ''Tragic Mirror.'' Phantom Punch may not pack the razzle-dazzle of Duper, but it just might help this gifted performer cement his rep for smartly crafted alt-pop.

Pan's Labyrinth:: (Film Review)

The pen isn't really mightier than the sword, of course. But smart dictators suppress freedom of thought and try to wipe out the foes with dangerous ideas, not just foes with weapons. Francisco Franco was a smart dictator indeed, and "Pan's Labyrinth" depicts the chilling climate that settled over Spain during the 1930s civil war that left him in charge for four decades.

Mexican writer-director Guillermo del Toro couches his allegory about fascism in a tale as cruelly fascinating as any from the Brothers Grimm. He's made a film about a girl who retreats into a fantasy world when life becomes too hellish to endure. But in this case, she speaks for all Spaniards who found themselves sinking into a long nightmare.

"Labyrinth" starts innocently enough, with Ofelia (12-year-old Ivana Baquero) accompanying her pregnant mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), to the country. They ride in a comfortable car toward the home of the stepfather who will provide long-sought financial security, and Ofelia meets a fairy whose presence hints at magical adventures.

The stepdad turns out to be repressive Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez), whose home is the headquarters of an attempt to wipe out rebel troops. When Carmen falls ill, Ofelia has only two friends: Mercedes (Maribel Verdu), the housekeeper sympathetic to the rebels, and the menacing goat-man of the title (Doug Jones). He tells Ofelia she can save her mother by performing a series of dangerous tasks, but can she trust this enigmatic creature?

Del Toro has split time evenly between horror/action features in English ("Mimic," "Blade II," "Hellboy") and more thoughtful, eerie pictures in his native Spanish ("Cronos," "The Devil's Backbone" and "Labyrinth"). The latter are less accessible to American audiences but always more complex, and "Labyrinth" is the peak of this output.

The human horror is intimate, with Vidal menacing his wife or preparing to interrogate a prisoner through torture; the nastiest scene shows a man shoving a bottle into Vidal's face, which the captain sews up before our eyes.

When Ofelia enters the fantasy world, she encounters the kinds of creatures one might have met in a Greek myth, including a blind cannibal with detachable eyes that fit in the palms of his hands. (Jones has made a career out of nonverbal, inhuman roles - remember Abe Sapien in "Hellboy"? - and he's oh-so-creepy in this small part.)

Del Toro expertly balances the household life, Ofelia's interaction with the faun and Vidal's pursuit of the rebels. Though characters aren't complicated - they rarely are in horror allegories - Ofelia's dilemma keeps us riveted. Baquero's fragility and innocence contrasts beautifully with Lopez's smiling sadism and Verdu's unflinching bravery.

We don't find out until the last scene how reality and fantasy intersect, when the meaning of the first shot of the film gets driven home. How many movies have you seen with a payoff like that?

Deerhunter:: Cryptograms (Album Review)

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the end of the world. Not the literal destruction of the Earth, per se, as millions of years remain before the sun expands into a red dwarf and engulfs our planet in a massive inferno. What I mean is the end of humankind. Having just seen Alfonso Cuarón’s excellent film, Children of Men, and having just read Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, my mind can’t help but be drawn to the near future and its dystopian possibilities, especially the idea of a reproductive cataclysm that has dominated recent artistic apocalyptic visions. On Cryptograms, Deerhunter, a quintet from Atlanta, creates a pervasive sense of inevitable doom across this fascinating and fractured effort. Does album foresee the end of the world? Perhaps, with nearly half of the album filled with ominous sounds and premonitions of our future.

Cryptograms, Deerhunter’s second album and first for Kranky, opens with an intriguing mix of electronic pulses, blips, sirens, and the sound of rushing water. This creepy and disconcerting opening vignette sets the tone for the album, and flows seamlessly into "Cryptograms," the first full song. The initial seven tracks alternate between instrumentals filled with chimes, drones, and lulling noise, as on "Red Ink," and the cruel poetics and noir guitar pickings of Bradford Cox on "Spring Hall Convert" and "Lake Sommerset." Then things change. The poppy, peppy, and catchy "Strange Lights" seems out of place following all of the rubble and gloom, and disrupts the mood. We soon find that the second half of the album, starting with "Strange Lights," is starkly different from the first half, with less ambience and more guitar-driven tracks, along with ruminations on adolescence and loss. Each half of the album was recorded in one day, respectively, and the moods are vastly different on the respective sides. But perhaps the lesson in this dichotomy is that even amidst the doom there is still hope, or at least memories of a time when there was.

Cox’s vocals, when present, are heavily processed and diluted, which creates an unsettling emotion emanating from our narrator. The album is full of flat notes and instruments, pounding bass lines, textured sounds, and enigmatic samples to create a dreary world where "the end of time was: no sound/ I had no friends/ I would benefit from no other kids/ I had no dreams." The production is engineered to evoke shadowy images in your mind, and the album ends with the simple yet ominous mantra: "was not seen again."

This is a dark, dystopian album—most consistently so through the first seven tracks. The best moments are, admittedly, the ambient and other instrumental material, though the album as an entity does a frighteningly good job of creating a landscape of sad faces struggling through crowded streets with little hope for the future. This is not a complete or coherent narrative of despair, as the two album halves don’t particularly work with one another—it really feels like two EPs sewn together. But the effort is more than evocative enough to scare the hell out of you, at least for a little while.

Kenpo iPod Jacket (Product Review)

When clothing meets technology it can mean one of two things. A clumsy poorly designed overpriced piece of junk OR in rare instance an elegant seamless piece of must have technology.. The Kenpo iPod Jacket is in the must have category.

The Kenpo Jacket for iPod features a 5-button controller built into the sleeve. Giving users access to the following controls: play/pause, track forward, track back and volume up/down. The self powered system requires no batteries and can be machine washed or dry cleaned without damage to its fabric control system.

The jacket is compatible with all iPods that utilize the 9-pin connection (that's 3rd Gen and up excluding the iPod nano and 5Gen iPod) although Kenpo is offering a mail order replacement for free to work with the latter two.

This jacket was received the day after christmas and it was punished by our testers. It was rolling in snow, put in large rain showers and repeatedly washed and dried.. And the condition of the coat today?? Like new. I have probably sold 10 of these coats this past month or so with friends trying it out and loving it.. Kenpo, You are my new favorite iPod accessory !

Menomena:: Friend and Foe (Album Review)

Portland, Ore., trio Menomena blasted out of the indie rock netherworld with 2004's ecstatic I Am the Fun Blame Monster! The band's m.o. is direct from the future: Multi-instrumentalist Brent Knopf created looping software Deeler, which forms the basis for all Menomena tracks. Now with their second LP, Friend and Foe, the trio hones its craft, mixing experimentation with David Byrne-like songwriting and jarring yet cohesive structure. Opener "Muscle'n Flo" segues from Blame Monster without breaking a sweat and flows into bombastic and angry "The Pelican." The electronic inspiration shines in "Air Aid," a futuristic ode to violence and love, which slips into the keyboard blast of "Weird," every song seamlessly dabbling into the next. No filler, not one outtake, Friend and Foe succeeds in living up to the hype of Menomena's first LP by growing wiser with every loop of sax and blast.
