Update: Tool Joins Depeche Mode As Coachella Headliner

Tool will join Depeche Mode as the headliners for the 2006 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which will be held April 29-30 at Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif. Tool performed at the first Coachella in 1999 but has not played live in the United States since late 2002. The band is expected to release a new album at some point this spring.

Other acts confirmed to appear at this year's festival are Paul Oakenfold, Franz Ferdinand, My Morning Jacket, Bloc Party, TV On The Radio, Sigur Ros, Scissor Sisters, Cat Power, Damian Marley and Tricky. Representing the hip-hop world will be Common, Hasidic reggae rapper Matisyahu, Lyrics Born, Atmosphere, Lady Sovereign, Digable Planets and Gnarls Barkley, a collaboration between producer Danger Mouse and rapper Cee-Lo.

The lineup has been the subject of intense speculation on the Internet in recent weeks, with fake, fan-created show posters spreading like wildfire. At least one major media outlet was duped by a particularly professional-looking fake, going so far as to announce that Smashing Pumpkins would be reforming for Coachella.

"That's not going to happen," Paul Tollett, president of concert promoter Goldenvoice said. "I don't know the story on Smashing Pumpkins. From what I can tell, they're not available." Another rumored reunion that isn't in the cards this year is legendary noise rock band My Bloody Valentine, which has not released a new album since 1991.

"With all the fake lineups out there, it makes it hard when you actually do put a lineup out," Tollett admits with a laugh, "especially when people are saying things like the Beatles and the pre-1965 Rolling Stones!"

Still, Tollett says he's thrilled with the 2006 roster of bands, which will be announced in full later today. He's particularly excited about some of the lesser-known acts, comparing their ranks to last year's crop of Arcade Fire, Keane and M.I.A.

"When the ad came out last year, maybe those bands weren't so big, but when the day came around, they'd blown up," he says. "People will be surprised when they sift through all the band names this year."

Among the up-and-comers set for this year are a host of British acts, including Nine Black Alps, Hard-Fi, Editors, the Zutons, Art Brut, the Magic Numbers and the Subways. The bill is rounded out by the likes of the Walkmen, the Dears, Carl Cox, Wolf Parade, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Phoenix, Deerhoof, Derrick Carter, Devendra Banhart, the Like, Sleater-Kinney, Mogwai, Coheed & Cambria, Mylo, Jamie Lidell, the Go! Team and Coldcut.

Tollett and his colleagues have been confirming acts up until the very last minute for the show, tickets for which go on sale Saturday. "I have the worst flu I've ever had in my life," he says, adding that he spent most of yesterday sleeping in his office. "On Friday, I started to feel sick and I wound up not leaving my couch until this afternoon. But the show must go on."

UNKLE Revs Up With Homme, Dalle, Astbury

James Lavelle's UNKLE project is progressing on its third studio album, which is presently being mixed in London and expected for a summer release.

The as-yet-untitled album will feature guest appearances from Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme and his fiancee, Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle, plus longtime QOTSA collaborator Chris Goss.

The Cult lead singer Ian Astbury has recorded vocals for three songs. "I have a great admiration for James Lavelle as an artist," he said. Astbury also raves about the contribution from Los Angeles rock act Autolux: "Their track is amazing," he says.

The new effort is the follow-up to 2003's "Never, Never, Land,". It featured guest turns from Brian Eno, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Massive Attack's 3D and former Stone Roses principals Ian Brown and Mani.

Franz Ferdinand and Belle and Sebastian Team Up For Charity Album

A host of Scottish indie stars are teaming together for a children’s charity album.

Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian, Snow Patrol and Primal Scream are contributing songs to the collection, with all proceeds going to local children’s charities.

Belle and Sebastian trumpeter Mick Cooke came up with the idea after he was personally asked to write songs for a charity album. He then decided to approach fellow Scottish indie bands.

Other acts contributing to the project are Teenage Fanclub and Kathryn Williams.

Franz Ferdinand are donating new track 'Jackie Jackson', while Snow Patrol are covering a track by Kim Wilde’s brother.

Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am...'(Album Review)

On the face of it, Arctic Monkeys do their best to put you off. They have a dismal name and even worse artwork. They look boring and make boring videos. In interviews, they play at being macho, professionally northern anti-intellectuals. So far, so Oasis.

But unlike Noel Gallagher, Alex Turner refuses to hide his intelligence when he writes his songs. Consequently, this debut album, aside from its childishly contrary title, is very much a continuation of The Libertines' work, with Turner bringing a dagger-like intellect to bear on his everyday routines: pulling girls in nightclubs, getting in scrapes, seething at the sleazy scumbags soliciting on the street outside. It's easy to draw a line to The Libertines' "Up the Bracket" album, with its hyper-eloquent tales of buying drugs, taking drugs and getting chased down the street by drug-dealers. While dreaming of Albion and Arcadia, obviously.

Reluctant as we are to harp on about them, The Libertines are central to an understanding of how the Monkeys got so big so quickly. When The Libertines dissolved at their peak, there was a ready-made, internet-connected fanbase left crying out for similarly sharp, funny, accessible band - but with a more practical bent. The Monkeys' MP3s popped up at exactly the right time, and with Doherty lurching from one crisis to the next, The Libertines' online army picked a new favourite band.

This debut album rewards their decision. Such is the depth and quality of Turner's songwriting, it plays like a best of, blasting away any skepticism with an early one-two of "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" and "Fake Tales Of San Francisco", before striking more contemplative notes with "Riot Van" (which dissects binge-drunk Britain) and "Mardy Bum" (a forensic exploration of relationship dynamics).

The Monkeys then tease out the white-funk thread running through their hot-wired indie-punk with "Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But…", before the album accelerates into the devastating closing trio of "When The Sun Goes Down", "From The Ritz To The Rubble" (in which a row with a bouncer inspires Turner's best song) and the climactic "A Certain Romance".

Having cast an eye over a world of Classic Reeboks and tracksuits tucked in socks, "A Certain Romance" then delivers a killer line: "All of that's what the point is not / The point is that there's no romance around here." While "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" may be short of old-fashioned romance, there's an abundance of real magic at work on this record. Like a good Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys are here to finish the job The Libertines abandoned. Hang out the bunting.

Robert Pollard:: From a compound eye (Album Review)

For his first post-Guided by Voices solo recording, Robert Pollard has returned to his suitcases of cassette tapes and whipped a selection of the hundreds of forgotten song fragments dating back to the late 70s into the marvellously varied and surprisingly listenable 26-track double-album-length From A Compound Eye (out Tuesday). Anyone expecting a half-arsed Fading Captain Series mess from the one-man song factory will be shocked by the atypically resolved and refined state of much of this material, which ranges from sweet pop ballads to fired-up freakbeat, with regular excursions into prog and psych weirdness. It should be noted that From A Compound Eye was recorded in 2004, so it's likely Pollard has two or three new discs ready to go by now, but GBV fans should definitely check this one out – there's a lot to like.

Top of the pop comes to the USA

The U.K.'s longest-running pop music show, "Top of the Pops," is coming to the United States. "Making the Band" impresario Louis J. Pearlman -- also known for developing 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys -- is shopping the BBC show to major U.S. TV networks. Pearlman is expected to approach Fox, the WB and ABC for a possible second quarter U.S. debut.

A potential host is L.A. deejay Jojo Wright from mainstream top 40 station KIIS. The American version will maintain the same title and logo of the original "Top of the Pops." Most of the performances on the new show are expected to be live. (via billboard)

Tortoise/ Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, The Brave and the Bold (Album Review)

It's a given that the musical underground's dating agency will throw up more satisfying matches than any the mainstream music industry can come up with. This past year it has been working flat-out, pairing critics' favourites such as Richard Buckner and Jon Langford, Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell, Iron & Wine and Calexico - and providing Billy and his alter egos Will Oldham and Palace with enough one-night stands that he risks getting a reputation.

Following his fling with Matt Sweeney in Superwolf and David Berman in Silver Palace, Oldham has now taken on a whole band, Tortoise, the acclaimed Chicago post-rock/avant-jazz/neo-Kraut rock collective, resulting in an album of 10 cover songs.

Though it's also a given that underground covers albums are likely to be more interesting than the mainstream - Oldham's last one was the gloriously existentialist/onanistic Bonnie "Prince" Billy Sings Greatest Palace Music, in which one of his alter egos covered songs by another - there's still a slight whiff of desperation about them. But this one seems less a case of being overstretched from side projects as yet another opportunity to play with the notion of identity. When his record label suggested the idea, Oldham agreed on condition that Tortoise - a band equally adept at stylistic smoke-screens - collaborate. Or, as it turns out, play back-up: on much of this record, their music acts as deferential support to Oldham's up-front vocal.

Songs covered here include Elton John's Daniel, Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road, Milton Nascimento's Cravo e Canela, Melanie's (Some Say) I Got Devil and Devo's That's Pep. Plus tunes by Richard Thompson, Don Williams, Minutemen, Quix'o'tic - if there's someone out there who can say it's not an intriguing track-list, I'd love to know what they're listening to. But it's more than a curiosity. The best covers are the ones given both respect and new interpretations: Thunder Road, with its slow melody and non-pompous production, is particularly haunting. The Elton John and Richard Thompson songs, though more faithful, get a spooky desperation from Oldham's bony, dolorous voice, while Melanie's melodramatic folk becomes a stoic song of sin and redemption. Weak points are the Nascimento and Devo covers - the first sounds like soulless Santana, the second just sounds naff - but there are enough moments of complex, nuanced, lingering beauty here to keep drawing you back.

Britt Daniel To Visit Mars

Spoon frontman and indie rock pinup boy Britt Daniel will be appearing on UPN's Veronica Mars next Wednesday (February 1). No word on whether Daniel is playing himself or a character, but he will be in Neptune, the fictional wealthy town that's home to the titular private detective/high school student, singing a karaoke version of "one of his all-time favorite songs." Given the show's title and Spoon's influences, reports that the song is Elvis Costello's "Veronica" seem believable. Daniel isn't the first rock star to show up at the town's karaoke bar. In October, Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols showed up to croon the Nazareth version of "Love Hurts." Seems like Neptune's got more than just mysteries going on!

Flaming Lips Announce Tracklist For New Album

At War With The Mystics (Warner Bros.), The Flaming Lips' long-anticipated follow up to 2002's Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, finally has a tracklist for fans to ponder before the album's April 4 release date. As expected there will also be a DVD companion featuring extra tracks, videos and featurettes, all in a "mind-warping 5.1 moving mix that just may make some of you feel queasy," notes the Flaming info provided by WB. We're hoping for scratch 'n' sniff bunny costume action too!

The record was produced by Dave Fridmann and the Flaming Lips. The first single, "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song," will be out March 7 while the track "The W.A.N.D." is currently available on your favorite (legal) digital downloading service.

On first listen, it sounds as if the Lips are biting hard at the Polyphonic Spree, Grandaddy, and Animal Collective. Just kidding. But the tracks we've heard so far employ less of the electronic production tricks and squiggly synths of Yoshimi, builds towards a rocky rhymthic center, before tucking us into bed (but you know, a bed in space, as is the way of the Lips). The band also has a handful of live dates listed so far, though a full tour is most likely in the works for April and May.

Tracklist For At War With The Mystics:
01. Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
02. Free Radicals
03. The Sound Of Failure/It's Dark....Is It Always This Dark??
04. My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion
05. Vein Of Stars
06. The Wizard Turns On....
07. It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big, I am So Small...Do I Stand A Chance?
08. Mr. Ambulance Driver
09. Haven't Got A Clue
10. The W.A.N.D.
11. Pompeii Am Gôtterdämmerung
12. Goin' On

Tour Dates:

Oldham, Yo La Tengo In New Film

Old Joy, a new film starring singer-songwriter and former Palace leader Will Oldham and scored by indie mainstays Yo La Tengo, premiers at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20. Co-starring Daniel London (Patch Adams, Rent) the film is based on a story by Jonathan Raymond of the same name. Set in the Cascade mountain range east of Portland, the story centers around two friends, Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London), who reunite for a weekend camping trip. Like much of Raymond's work it is a minimalist story of friendship, loss and alienation. Directed by Kelly Reichardt, who made her Sundance debut in 1994 with the film River of Grass, it will be the director's first feature-length film in nearly five years. Though Old Joy is not competing at Sundance this year, it will compete at the Rotterdam Film Festival, which begins January 28. Old Joy will be the first American film in competition at the festival in three years. Will Oldham has also acted in the films Junebug, Elysian Fields and Matewan while Yo La Tengo made their film debut playing the Velvet Underground in the movie I Shot Andy Warhol.

Coachella line-up' leaks

Portishead, The Strokes and White Stripes among those rumoured to be playing

The line-up for this year's Coachella Festival appears to have leaked.

A poster for the Californian festival which, as previously reported, is set to be headlined by Depeche Mode and a reformed Smashing Pumpkins, has appeared online revealing the bands that could be playing the bash (April 29-30).

According to the leak, the festival's highlights will include Portishead after almost a decade of inaction, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Gorillaz, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Massive Attack, Maximo Park, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Editors, Underworld, Ordinary Boys, Secret Machines, Sufjan Stevens and Antony And The Jonsons are also believed to be heading Coachella this spring.

Coachella's organisers are yet to officially confirm any bands for the festival, though have revealed tickets will go sale from February 4. (via NME)

White Stripes Get Entangled In A Simpson Family Feud

For years now, the White Stripes have made their living dressing in reds and whites, with the occasional foray into black. But now, it looks like they're adding a new color to their palette: "Simpsons" yellow.

That's because the Stripes have been tapped to appear in an upcoming episode of the long-running FOX 'toon, scheduled to air sometime this fall.

In the episode, titled "Jazzy and the Pussycats," Jack and Meg White find themselves in the middle of a family feud when Homer and Marge buy a drum kit for Bart, who becomes a jazz drummer, much to the dismay of his musically inclined sister, Lisa. In one scene — an homage to the Stripes' clip for "The Hardest Button to Button" — Bart bashes his kit in his bedroom, down the street, through the halls of Springfield Elementary and into an intersection, where he meets up with the Detroit duo.

According to a spokesperson for FOX, Jack and Meg recorded their lines in New York on November 30, before Jack lost his voice and was ordered by doctors not to speak. Episodes take between six and nine months to complete, so while "The Simpsons" is currently in its 17th season, "Jazzy and the Pussycats" won't hit the small screen until season 18.

The Stripes are just the latest addition to a long list of musicians to visit Springfield. Last year, 50 Cent appeared on an episode called "Pranksta Rap", and Britney Spears, Blink-182, R.E.M., Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill have all gotten animated for the show as well. (James Montgomery)

Melvins Expand Lineup, Ready Live Album

Like Spinal Tap's bad luck with drummers, the Melvins have similar problems holding on to bassists. Their latest four-string casualty was Kevin Rutmanis, but the group -- led longtime members Buzz Osborne (vocals, guitar) and Dale Crover (drums) -- has beefed up its line-up considerably. Now expanded to a quartet, the Melvins have been joined by Hydra Head recording artists Big Business.

“Now we're going to be four piece,” Crover said. “Two drums -- just like the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead!” "We've known [the Big Business] guys for a long time. It's not like they're going to quit Big Business or anything like that. When we tour, we're hoping that they'll open."

Crover sees no problem sharing the time-keeping with Willis. "It's great,” he says. “He's left handed, so we want to do this 'mirror image' type of thing. We've kind of fused our two drum sets together, and we're going to try and do some crazy thing with it. We're sharing these big toms in between us."

The new lineup plans to tour at some point later this year and eventually hit the studio. But the next Melvins release will be a live CD comprised of a a recent performance of the 1993 album “Houdini.”

"A bunch of those songs we'd never played live before,” Crover reports. “It's going to be on Ipecac -- it will be out in the spring. The warm-up show we did was actually better than the official show, so we did another [in Los Angeles], and that's the one that we recorded for the record."

The Melvins will also be playing shows this spring backing ex-Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra in Australia. Additionally, Crover will be appearing on the long-in-the-works Mike Patton project, Peeping Tom.

"I did some recording with [Patton] a while back -- about two years ago,” Crover says of the album. “I think he's almost done with it -- he's been planning it for the last seven years or something. He's mentioned that it's going to be more straightforward for him. I don't know how many songs he recorded -- an insane amount, like 30. There's a lot of layered vocals -- like Beach Boys style. Some hip hop-y sort of beats. It's weird. It's drum machine mixed with live drums mixed with crazy samples, but then there's guitar and bass. Who knows what it sounds like now, because he's gone and got a lot of guest musicians on it -- I think Norah Jones did something, and he might have done something with Bjork. He's sort of mentioned a possible tour."

Costello Formalizes Symponic Tour, Album Plans

Initially expected to begin sometime this month, Elvis Costello's orchestral tour will instead open March 27 in San Francisco. The artist and frequent collaborator Steve Nieve will perform with local orchestras on the 13-date trek, which concludes May 13 in Atlanta. Only 10 cities appear on the itinerary, including two shows in Honolulu and one in Maui, as well as three in Baltimore.

As previously reported, Costello will perform a suite from his inaugural symphony composition, "Il Sogno" and material heard on "My Flame Burns Blue," due Feb. 28 via Deutsche Grammophon. Finally, Costello's recent collaborations with Allen Toussaint will appear on "The River in Reverse," due in May via Verve Forecast. As first reported here, the material on the set includes new songs co-written by Costello and Toussaint, as well as fresh versions of several vintage Toussaint songs.

With producer Joe Henry, the pair recorded in November in Toussaint's native New Orleans with Costello's band, the Imposters, and several members of Toussaint's band. Conducted amid the city's massive recovery effort, the sessions are thought to be among the first there since Hurricane Katrina struck in late August.

Here are Costello's tour dates:

Coachella Documentary Heads To 115 Theaters

The film, which was directed by Drew Thomas and produced by event promoter Goldenvoice, will also be premiered Jan. 19 in Los Angeles and Jan. 23 in New York.

Jack White ordered not to speak

The White Stripes have had to postpone their Japanese tour dates due to Jack White suffering an "acute vocal cord problem".

The band were due to kick off on January 12, playing two dates in Tokyo and one each in Osaka and Nagoya.

However, in a mail-out to fans, it was revealed that Jack has been instructed to not speak or sing for the next two weeks in order to protect his vocal cords and speed recovery.

The dates are hoped to be rescheduled as soon as possible, although the White Stripes still plan to play the Big Day Out festival, which rolls through New Zealand and Australia from January 20.

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD Due In Late March

New York rock trio the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will return on March 28 with its second Interscope album, "Show Your Bones," according to a label spokesperson. First single "Gold Lion" will be commercially released a week earlier in the United Kingdom. The set was produced by Squeak E Clean and mixed by rock veteran Alan Moulder.

The set is the follow-up to 2003's "Fever To Tell," which peaked at No. 55 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 524,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It spawned the single "Maps," which reached No. 9 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.

"'Show Your Bones' is what happens when you put your finger in a light socket," singer Karen O says of the album name. "Maybe there is some of that electric current flowing through the tracks of our album illuminating us from the inside out for you to laugh at and cry to or fry to. Or not."

The group is planning a small-club tour of North America in February in advance of "Show Your Bones." Beyond that, the only event on its schedule comes May 14 as part of the U.K.'s All Tomorrow's Parties festival. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs will perform alongside their own handpicked roster of acts, including TV On The Radio, Oneida, Liars, Blood Brothers and Ex Models.

Greg Dulli:: Amber Headlights (Album Review)

A bridge between Dulli's work with Afghan Whigs and his latter Twilight Singers recordings, this disc collects songs written in 2001 and shelved after Dulli's friend, the director Ted Demme, died in early 2002. The songs were recorded during these early '00 years, drawing together a band that included Jon Skibic on guitar, Mathias Schneeberger on organ and other keyboards, Michael Sullivan on bass and Matt Hergert on drums. Dulli augmented that core band with half a dozen other players; the ubiquitous and talented Petra Haden sings on a couple of tracks. Amber Headlights' long gestation period may account, partly, for the old-fashioned feel of several of the tracks. The hard rockers, particularly "So Tight," have an early 1990s alterna-vibe, reminiscent of The Replacements at the high end and Spin Doctors at the low. In fact, if there's a recent record that Amber Headlights calls to mind, it's Tommy Stinson's Village Gorilla Head, also well constructed and played, also subtly, disturbingly uncontemporary. Still, once you've made your peace with the fact that Amber Headlights sounds like FM radio of a decade or so ago, the songs begin to take over. With Afghan Whigs, Dulli was one of the first to incorporate R&B and funk into the alternative nation sound, and here again, there's a hard-soul, funk-tinged edge to the rock format. "So Tight" rides a white-boy funk beat under its verse and slips a wah-wah'd solo in at the mid-point. Dulli's voice is, by nature, rough and blues-leaning; his howl of "It's Friday... I'm lonely..." sounds like a lost but unrepentant soul. Yet for all the grit, the song veers sharply toward the slick in the chorus, breaking for Top 40 predictability in its ringing choruses and layered vocals. "Cigarettes" is better, starting with a stark drum beat and Dulli observing, "The cigarettes are gonna kill me" in his trademark rasp. The chorus, again, feels like it belongs to a different, less adventurous song; yet though its uplift feels contrived, it carries you along all the same. Oddly enough, it is in the slower songs, beginning with "Domani," that Dulli hits his stride. Here his cigarette-ravaged croon flirts with a liquid blues guitar line, leaving dead-black spaces for the words to sink in. There's a big, guitar-led break that comes between the verses, but it subsides quickly, shrinking to subtle licks that support the melody. There's less effort, less striving, less stress in this song, and Dulli sounds all the better for it. "Domani" hints at what Dulli's capable of, but the payoff comes later, with the two tracks that close the disc. "Wicked" begins in a haze of droning guitars, Dulli whispering "This world is wicked" into a close-held mic. Lavishly orchestrated, the cut builds textures from synthetic strings, harmonium, guitars, frantic drums and an anxious piano line, yet it never feels heavy. The tension in the cut is all about restraint; the explosion that might provide relief — and return the track to ordinariness — is held back, never made explicit. "Get the Wheel," the album's finest track, follows, all gospel piano and emotion-laden vocals. "Somebody put a gun to my face/ Go ahead, I said," he sings at one point, then echoes "So Tight"'s verse fragment, "Get the wheel/ Let's go for a drive/ If you're troubled I'll follow you down." Left nearly bare, the focus becomes the song itself, soulful and gripping and true.Amber Headlights fails, when it does, because it's trying to be two things at once: a personal reflection on life and death and a commercially acceptable rock record. But when the album ditches the tricks and conventions that define mainstream rock and focuses on Dulli's songs, it is very powerful indeed. (by Jennifer Kelly)

Lou Rawls dead at 72

(CNN) -- Lou Rawls, whose mellifluous baritone was featured on hits ranging from his own "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" to Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me," has died. He was 72.

Rawls died Friday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, where he was hospitalized last month for treatment of lung and brain cancer, said his publicist, Paul Shefrin. His wife, Nina, was at his bedside when he died.

The singer was as well known for his charitable activities as he was for his smooth four-octave range. He founded the Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Telethon, which raised millions of dollars for the United Negro College Fund.

Rawls was born on December 1, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. (Some sources say 1935.) A childhood friend of Sam Cooke -- and, like Cooke, trained in gospel -- as a teenager he took Cooke's place in Cooke's gospel group, the Highway QCs, and later supported Cooke on tour and in the studio.

He nearly died in an auto accident while traveling with Cooke in 1958, spending several days in a coma, according to Allmusic.com.

Rawls sang in a variety of genres, from gospel to soul to standards.

"I've gone the full spectrum, from gospel to blues to jazz to soul to pop," Rawls once said on his Web site, according to The Associated Press. "And the public has accepted what I've done through it all."

Rawls sang background on Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" -- that's him doing the "yeah" responses and some harmonies -- and had his first big solo hit with 1966's "Love Is a Hurtin' Thing," which earned him a mention in Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music."

He had his biggest hit in 1976 with "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine," which topped the R&B charts and hit No. 2 on the pop charts. Other hits include "Your Good Thing (Is About to End)," "A Natural Man" and "Lady Love."

He won three Grammys and is reported to have sold more than 40 million albums.

Rawls also appeared in a variety of TV shows and movies, including the films "Leaving Las Vegas" and "The Rugrats Movie" and the TV shows "The Big Valley," "Mannix," "Fantasy Island" and "Baywatch," according to the Internet Movie Database.

His voice also graced TV commercials, notably ads for Anheuser-Busch, the beer company for which he was the corporate spokesman.

Rawls was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2004 and brain cancer in May 2005, according to the AP.

He is survived by his wife Nina, as well as his three adult children, Louanna Rawls, Lou Rawls, Jr. and Kendra Smith, and his infant son, Aiden.

Arctic Monkeys Make Excuses Over why the album was brought forward...

Arctic Monkeys have explained the real reason why their debut album was brought forward a week.

The music world had thought that the Sheffield lads brought the 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' forward to January 23 because it appeared on file sharing websites.

But Laurence Bell from their label Domino insists that it’s because the manufacturing process went quicker than expected. Er, right.

He explains: “People are always putting albums back so we thought it would be fun to bring some forward. We did the same with Franz Ferdinand.

“The manufacturing went quicker than anticipated and the thinking is that the albums are going to do more good if they are in the shops rather than sat in the Domino warehouse for an extra week.

“And the sooner people can hear this incredible record the better. It's going to be the soundtrack to 2006."

Ahhh there’s nothing like a bit of modesty.

AMAZING Funk Gems!!
There is never, ever going to be a new Sly Stone album; 24 years after his last one, it's time to stop waiting. Still, there are a few worthy moments from his glory years that only the most dedicated crate diggers had heard until recently. Around 1970, Stone launched the Stone Flower label, which released all of four singles. Two of them, "You're the One" (a Top 10 R&B hit) and "Somebody's Watching You," were by Little Sister, the group fronted by his actual little sister, Vet Stone, with songs written by big brother. Pedro the Lion Call It Quits

File this one under splits, amicable: multi-instrumentalist TW Walsh has opted to leave Pedro the Lion, the longstanding, vaguely Christian, vaguely emo rock project of songwriter David Bazan. The Walsh-less Bazan plans to soldier on under his own name, shelving the Lion moniker for the indefinite future. First Aslan and now Pedro-- it ain't easy being king of the jungle these days.

It's all gravy between these bros, though. According to a press release, Walsh had the following to say about the split: "Dave and I are still buddies. I wish him the best, and I know that he'll continue to thrive and grow as an artist on his own...I think his best work is still ahead of him. As for me, I'm thankful for all the experiences that my tenure with the band provided, but I am sure that this was the right decision for me and my family." Best of luck to you, T-dub.

Walsh plans to make an epic return to his career as a software engineer and will continue work on his own music project, christened The Soft Drugs. Meanwhile, Bazan plans to release his first solo record in early 2007 via Jade Tree and will reprise his side project Headphones shortly after that. (Walsh, who contributed to Headphones' 2005 debut album, is also no longer part of that group.)

As reported yesterday, Bazan will join forces with fellow troubadours Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), and Vic Chesnutt (his own damn self) to form the Voltron-esque touring entity known as the Undertow Orchestra, which will head out on the road in February. Bazan will also play a couple of solo in late January.

Winners never quit:

Belle & Sebastian, New Pornographers Planning 'O6 Tour

Belle & Sebastian and the New Pornographers are planning to hit the road together. According to the Matador Records Web site, the labelmates will tour North America early in the New Year, although no dates are yet confirmed.

B&S have a U.K. tour slated to open Jan. 15 in Glasgow and run through a Feb. 10 gig in London. As previously reported, the group is also due to perform in March as part of the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

The group is touring around the release of "The Life Pursuit", due Feb. 6 in Europe via Rough Trade and a day later in the United States through Matador.

The New Pornographers have just two shows on their schedule at deadline, including a A Feb. 22 show with Matt Pond PA and dios (malos) at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wis., is a makeup date for an Oct. 21 show at the venue that was postponed when bassist John Collins suffered an appendicitis attack and required emergency surgery.

The Strokes:: First Impressions of Earth (Album Review)

This is a band that knows about making First Impressions. So, if the Strokes' third outing doesn't create as much of a stir as the first, that's okay. This disc still offers plenty of good stuff. Julian Casablancas continues to sing as if roused from a deep sleep, the rhythm section keeps the tunes as puckery tight as the band's trousers and guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. balance melodic strumming with some impressive shredding, especially on "Heart in a Cage" and "Vision of Division." While there isn't anything as memorable as "Last Nite," and "Razorblade" sounds a little like Barry Manilow's "Mandy," the disc still delivers a good buzz all its own. Overall not as good as the first but much better than the last.

A New Year For Mogwai

Scottish drone rockers Mogwai have posted dates for an upcoming US tour in March 2006. This is not to mention a smattering of festival dates, including SXSW in Austin, Texas, and shows scheduled in Japan and the UK next month. Also in March, the band will be releasing their fifth studio album, titled Mr. Beast, courtesy of Matador Records. According to the updated bio, this album imparts as much metal-tinged psychedelica as it does the traditional sleepy, symphonic subtlety that Mogwai is known for. In other words, more swwweet riffs, man! Check out the first single off Mr. Beast, "Friend of the Night," available on the band’s Myspace profile. Let’s just say that piano hasn’t rocked this hard since Jerry Lee Louis lit it on fire! (Via Filter MM)
