The Strokes:: First Impressions of Earth (Album Review)

This is a band that knows about making First Impressions. So, if the Strokes’ third outing doesn’t create as much of a stir as the first, that’s okay. This disc still offers plenty of good stuff. Julian Casablancas continues to sing as if roused from a deep sleep, the rhythm section keeps the tunes as puckery tight as the band’s trousers and guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. balance melodic strumming with some impressive shredding, especially on “Heart in a Cage” and “Vision of Division.” While there isn’t anything as memorable as “Last Nite,” and “Razorblade” sounds a little like Barry Manilow’s “Mandy,” the disc still delivers a good buzz all its own. Overall not as good as the first but much better than the last.
