CBGB's Fate Uncertain As Final Hours Of Lease Tick Away

On Tuesday night, punk band the Bouncing Souls will perform within the legendary walls of one of the cradles of punk rock, CBGB. With the iconic New York club's lease winding down to its September 1 expiration, it could be the last live set this decades-old landmark gets to experience. On the eve of E Street Band member and "The Sopranos" actor Steven Van Zandt's last-ditch CBGB Forever event at Washington Square Park, there has been little measurable progress in the fight to keep Hilly Kristal's little spot in the Bowery alive. What organizers of the "Save CBGB" movement had hoped would be a celebratory event, featuring former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale's band Institute, Blondie, Chesterfield Kings, the Charms, a repeat appearance by the Bouncing Souls, and others, could wind up being little more than an epic wake for CBGB. CBGB Forever, which is being called a "rally" to inspire New Yorkers to save the club, runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the event, and that money will be used to pay Kristal's legal expenses, in the event that CBGB is removed from its current location, or will be donated to the BRC if he's awarded a new, workable lease. A handful of speakers and musicians will also be on hand, including Talking Heads Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, filmmaker Jonathan Demme and actor Joe Pantoliano. "Nothing has changed," said Muzzy Rosenblatt, executive director of the Bowery Residents' Committee, a nonprofit that provides housing and social services to the homeless — and also is Kristal's landlord. "They still owe us rent, which was one of many isues." Rosenblatt, of course, is referring to the $91,000 in back rent that earlier this month a New York judge determined Kristal did not owe (see "CBGB Doesn't Have To Pay $90,000 In Back Rent, Judge Rules"). Throughout the drawn-out legal dispute, that figure has been a popular reference point for Rosenblatt, who halted lease renewal negotiations several months ago, claiming the $91,000 would need to be paid before talks could resume. "I have no crystal ball," he continued. "I don't know what to expect anymore. I try not to get into hypotheticals. All we've ever wanted was responsible behavior. So far, that's been an issue. What'll happen on September 1, I don't know. When it does, we will react appropriately." The two sides don't seem close to reaching a new lease agreement. Rosenblatt wanted to more than triple Kristal's current rent, to over $50,000 a month. Kristal has said such a dramatic hike would sink the business. Rosenblatt has also grumbled about what he perceives to be numerous building violations at CBGB, above which he provides temporary housing for hundreds of homeless people. Citations have been issued to the club for some of those violations, he's said, but none have been resolved. Kristal has expressed interest in moving CBGB, perhaps even to Las Vegas, if he's evicted from 313 Bowery. Earlier this month, Kristal requested a face-to-face meeting with Rosenblatt, in a draft proposal designed to reignite talks (see "Talks Resume In Fight To Save Punk Landmark CBGB"). He offered a 15 percent rent increase as well as a third-party guarantor for future rent payments, by way of a newly established nonprofit called the Bowery Project. In addition, Van Zandt pledged to organize annual benefit concerts for the BRC. "If there is no new lease, their obligation as tenants would be to vacate the premises once the lease expires," said Rosenblatt. "There have been communications they had sent us, what they thought was a preliminary proposal. It wasn't complete. We told them where it was deficient. We told them that in any event, discussions of any new lease would depend upon [them] first being compliant under the existing lease, and they have ignored all of that. I don't know what they're doing. That's their business, not mine. I just know that what the BRC's interested in is a responsible tenancy that doesn't jeopardize our mission or our work to help thousands of homeless men and women." Kristal could not be reached for comment. Because video footage of the club was utilized in his failed Olympics bid, supporters of the "Save CBGB" movement figured they'd have a sympathetic ear in Mayor Michael Bloomberg. They've petitioned his office, asking that he intervene (the BRC receives $30 million in annual funding from the city of New York), but Bloomberg remained silent on the issue for months — until a press conference Tuesday afternoon (August 30). "CBGB, it's a great New York City institution," he said while hoisting a "Save CBGB" T-shirt. "It's more than just another club. We are trying to bring both sides together. ... But if we cannot, what we've said to CBGB is that we will try to find another location. We do not want to lose this institution in New York City. It's part of our culture. They bring a lot of business here. I don't think they belong anyplace else other than New York City. If the owner of the building that they're in cannot be convinced to come to an agreement with them, then we will do something else." (Chris Harris)

THE STOOGES CAUSE STAGE INVASION IN LONDON

THE STOOGES made a chaotic return to LONDON last night when they caused a stage invasion at their HAMMERSMITH APOLLO show (August 30). ollowing their appearance at The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals last weekend (August 26-28), the band were joined by over forty fans as they tore through their second album ’Funhouse’. During set-closer ’No Fun’ the reformed punk pioneers – led by Iggy Pop - invited the crowd to storm the stage. Beer, cigarettes and underwear were all thrown in the dramatic finale from the returning heroes, whilst Pop was swamped by stage-invaders as they scrambled to touch the singer and sing into his microphone. The band ripped through each track from the 1970 LP ’Funhouse’ including ’Down On The Street’, ’Loose’, ’TV Eye’, ’Dirt’, ’1970’, ’Fun House’ and ’LA Blues’. The group – including guitarist Ron Asheton, bassist Mike Watt and drummer Scott Asheton - also played a selection of songs from their 1969 self-titled debut including ’I Wanna Be Your Dog’ and ’1969’. The gig was part of the ’Don’t Look Back’ series of gigs in which a band plays one of their seminal albums in full. Upcoming shows include performances from Belle And Sebastian, The Lemonheads and Mudhoney.

Death Cab For Cutie:: Plans (Album Review)

Death Cab for Cutie have The OC to thank for making them the subject of water-cooler chatter, after a recent appearance in the soap. And just like the show's teen characters, Death Cab for Cutie's songs appear perfect while seething with angst. Unfortunately, at times the band are as unconvincing as the show. Suffering from a late-twentysomething malaise, singer Ben Gibbard's angelic vocals sag with the weariness of a man who's gazed at his navel all his life only to realise there's nothing but fluff and darkness. "These wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below," he sings dolefully on Brothers on a Hotel Bed. The music is similarly introspective, hampered by funereal rhythms and mournful piano melodies. But when Gibbard wrestles with big questions in smaller ways, he makes magic. Both I Will Follow You Into the Dark and the chilling What Sarah Said look death in the face with a wry smile, the pin-sharp observations as far away as possible from any practicised pose. Final GBV Show Heading To DVD

Guided By Voices' New Year's Eve 2004 blow-out at Chicago's Cabaret Metro, which also doubled as the final show of its storied career, will be released on DVD later this fall. The as-yet-untitled DVD is due Nov. 15 via Plexifilm with bonus features to be announced. As expected, the performance was epic even by GBV's standards, encompassing more than 60 songs from the nooks and crannies of the band's catalog and the myriad side projects of leader Robert Pollard. Appropriately, the show ended with "Don't Stop Now" from GBV's classic 1996 album "Under the Bushes Under the Stars." In between, a host of past GBV members joined the band on stage, including guitarist Tobin Sprout for "Fourteen Cheerleader Cold Front," bassist James Greer (with Sprout) for "Johnny Appleseed," drummer Don Thrasher for "I Am a Scientist," drummer Jim MacPherson and bassist Greg Demos on "I Drove a Tank" and "Shocker in Gloomtown" and Pollard's brother Jim for "Lethargy." The show also boasted guest turns from Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster ("I Am a Tree") and former Chavez leader Matt Sweeney ("Unleashed! The Large-Hearted Boy"). As previously reported, Pollard has several new releases in the pipeline, including the second installment of his massive "Suitcase" boxed set. First up is the Sept. 27 release of the EP "Music for 'Bubble'" via the artist's own Fading Captain Series imprint. (via billboard)

BLOC PARTY TAKE A BREAK

Bloc Party have revealed their plans for the next year or so, and the news is: expect a break from them for the start of 2006. Bassist Gordon Moakes also explained the thinking behind hotly anticipated new single ‘Two More Years’, released on October 3, and what the band think of the remixes for their imminent ‘Silent Alarm Remixed’ album. According to Moakes, 2006 will see the boys hitting the studio at full speed, and approaching things a bit differently too. “I think we’ll be working on ideas for the rest of the year and then start trying to get something to tape properly in January…We’ve been looking at different beats - guitar bands don’t always think about how they use rhythm in songs.” In the meantime, being the nice chaps that they are, the world will get a few months off from Bloc Partying, they said to XFM: “It’s tiring enough being in people’s faces and in their perceptions constantly, people deserve as much of a break from us, as us!” Talking about ‘Two More Years’, Moakes said: “We had the feeling that Kele was looking to have one stab at writing a pop tune, something you’d hear on the radio…it’s our semi-conscious attempt to write something more immediate.” He also named his highlights from the remixes various people have done for ‘Silent Alarm Remixed’: “I really love the Mogwai mix [of ‘Plans’] because I’m a huge fan, but I also like the Engineers mix [of ‘Blue Light’], it takes the track in a new direction.” 'Silent Alarm Remixed' is out on August 29.

Snoop Dogg Skateboards???

Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus, superstar rapper, is now venturing into the world of skateboarding with the launch of the Snoop Dogg Board Company (SDBC). The company will launch with a complete line of long and short skateboards, accessories and backpacks. SDBC is being distributed by Pentagon Distribution, the distributor for Kampus Wakeskates and shoes, Academy Snowboards and CD Wakeboard Bindings. "Bing Worthington, Jr., Snoop Dogg's brother, came to us with a vision of bridging these two industries together because there is already so much crossover between skateboarding and the rap/hip-hop market,” said Duane Pacha, President of Pentagon Distribution. The decks will be competitively priced and in addition to the skate accessories, SDBC will launch a complete line of high-end Snoop Dogg luggage and travel bags, which will hit stores in January 2006. "We are excited to work with the Pentagon group,” Worthington said. “These guys are definite hustlers in this business. With our music industry connections and concerts, we know this project is going to get big. We are down with skateboarding and want to get more music fans into skateboarding," commented Worthington. SDBC is currently looking for qualified international distributors to represent Snoop Dogg Board Co. For more information visit www.snoopdoggboardco.com.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl (Album Review)

As far as about-faces go, BRMCs change from shoe-gazing garage-rockers to cattle-grazing wayfaring strangers could be described as pretty major, if one was prone to massive bouts of understatement. For a band feted, then subsequently dismissed, as just your basic black-clad Jesus & Mary Chain worshippers to come back with an album of acoustic, folky Americana is one of the more surprising musical developments of this year. Initially, it’s difficult to swallow. There are a lot of questions to be answered, and while it's true that their third-album hand may have been forced by drummer Nick Jago's reluctance to do anything as mundane as turn up for gigs and the disagreements with Virgin that followed the poor sales of Take Them On, On Your Own, it’s tempting to be a little weary. Are their hearts in it? Is this all a ruse? Can they pull this off? To begin with, it seems not. Neither of the opening tracks do anything persuasive; Shuffle Your Feet's chanting and handclapping goes down the road marked 'hoedown' never to be seen again, and Howl's efforts to countrified a squalling guitar with slices of organ and harmonica falls somewhat short, but after two false dawns Devil's Waitin' marks the start of the transformation becoming far more convincing. "I've seen the battle and I've seen the war / And the life out here is the life I've been sold", Peter Hayes sings, matter-of-fact and resigned, the simple handpicked guitar starkly ringing out, and you almost believe its 1962 and you're in some dark dive watching Dylan or Johnny Cash do a turn. It would be tempting to dismiss it as a fluke, until they best it: firstly on the distant, wind swept Fault Line and then the rat-a-tat storytelling syllables of Complicated Situation. And by the time the time closing track The Line comes around you're willing to forgive the schmaltzy piano-led Promise and the ploddingly portentous religious drone of Gospel Song as mere teething troubles. Especially as the last track marks quite a watershed, being the single most cohesive stab at what you might have previously imagined a Country & Western BRMC would be: dark, foreboding and creeping towards a big swirling guitar led finish with malevolent intent. It’s the best thing on the album. Rebirths are hard, especially for bands who haven't exactly displayed a massive range of musical influences previously, so for BRMC to totally reinvent themselves like this is nothing if not brave. It's also mostly successful. It isn't their best record, but as an acknowledgement that slabs of feedback-laden noise weren't going to take them much further, and change was needed for an attempt at a long-term career, it's promising. "When did you stop caring?" they ask at the end of The Line, and tempting as it might have been to say "Somewhere about 2003, same as you" the grand transformation that Howl marks mean it's no longer so. BRMC go folk, and pull it off. Whatever next...(By: Tim Lee UK)

Animal Collective:: Sung Tongs
Avant-pop with swirling psychedelia and folk roots, Animal Collective makes music that is impossible to categorize and one of the most unique, fascinating listens of recent time. 'Sung Tongs' is a masterpiece of post-modern music that tests the listener's comprehension to the point of accepting the sheer joy of their abstraction and experimentation. Although acoustic guitars, primitive percussion, and gentle vocals are heavily utilized, there is so much more to this sound to describe; the circular repetitions, the chattering choral interplay and wisps of speech and laughter, and the surreal production tricks create a truely unique experience. 'Visiting Friends' is a beautiful tong reminiscent of long train rides through the dilapidated, U.S. countryside. 'Who could win a Rabbit', 'Sweet Road', and 'We Tigers' exult a whimsical and childlike celebration of life. Animal Collective records music for the bold and adventurous, as 'Sung Tongs' is a breathtaking experience.

Synthesizer innovator Moog dies at 71

RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- Robert A. Moog, whose self-named synthesizers turned electric currents into sound and opened the musical wave that became electronica, has died. He was 71. Moog was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, detected in April. He died Sunday at his home in Asheville, according to his company's Web site. A childhood interest in the theremin, one of the first electronic musical instruments, would lead Moog to a create a career and business that tied the name Moog as tightly to synthesizers as the name Les Paul or Leo Fender is to electric guitars. As a Ph.D student in engineering physics at Cornell University, Moog -- rhymes with vogue -- in 1964 developed his first voltage-controlled synthesizer modules with composer Herbert Deutsch. By the end of that year, R.A. Moog Co. marketed the first commercial modular synthesizer. The instrument allowed musicians, first in a studio and later on stage, to generate a range of sounds that could mimic nature or seem otherworldly by flipping a switch, twisting a dial, or sliding a knob. Other synthesizers were already on the market in 1964, but Moog's stood out for being small, light and versatile.

Label-less Radiohead Pressing On With New Album

Radiohead will enter a "proper studio" in an unnamed city today (Aug. 19) to continue work on its seventh studio album, according to a post from frontman Thom Yorke at the "Dead Air Space" section of the group's official Web site. No release date has yet been penciled in for the set. Radiohead has been recording on and off at its own studio since early 2004, but it is unknown how much time has been devoted specifically to the as-yet-untitled new project. "We don't take time off very well," guitarist Jonny Greenwood previously said. "We're enjoying it still, so why just go home and do nothing?" A representative from the band's Oxford, England-based management firm Courtyard Management said that for the current sessions, Radiohead is "putting some ideas together" to "see where they want to go with the next step musically." The band is also moving forward without label representation, having fulfilled its recording contract with EMI with the 2003 release of "Hail to the Thief." That album debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 932,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Radiohead's management dismissed speculation over recent months that Warner Music was poised to secure the band's signature. "The band [is] not looking for a record company in any way, shape or form," the representative says. "They are out of a contract, but they're not actively looking for another one. They're getting on with doing what they do." An EMI spokesperson declined to comment on the subject. Yorke expanded on the topic on Radiohead.com, revealing the band has "no record contract as such. Any offers? What we would like is the old EMI back again, the nice genteel arms manufacturers who treated music a nice side project [and] weren't [too] bothered about the shareholders." This post has since been removed from the site. Readers are also treated to Yorke's typically sureal musings on staying at a hotel: "nothin in the microwave ... I sleep with the screen on ... no one changes the bed ... and the wardrobes are empty."

SONGS BEYOND THE GRAVE:: Elliott Smith material soundtracks new flick

New material by late singer Elliott Smith has surfaced on the soundtrack of a forthcoming motion picture feature film. Smith, who was lauded for his work on The Royal Tenenbaums and Good Will Hunting had originally been slated to do all the music for Thumbsucker, which comes out in September, but the plan lost momentum, and then Smith died. Thumbsucker does exactly what it says on the tin, telling the story of a person trying to give up putting said digit in their mouth. It had been planned that Smith would do a cover of Saint Leonard Cohen's 'Sisters Of Mercy' for the soundtrack, though that sadly never saw the light of day. Instead, Smith's posthumous contribution will be 'Let's Get Lost', and his takes on Cat Stevens' 'Trouble' and Big Star's 'Thirteen'. In the absence of Smith from this mortal coil, the rest of the soundtrack has been provided by sadly-gone-toilet weirdos The Polyphonic Spree. Film director Mike Mills said that the decision to get the Texans in came from seeing them play live, which "really changed all the molecules in my body! Their performance just made me feel like, 'Why not be happy? Why aren't you choosing to be positive?' I walked out of the theater and said, 'That's what I want people to feel like in the film.'"

Leonard Cohen says he's broke

One of Canada's most famous singer-songwriters says he's broke. Macleans magazine reports that Leonard Cohen discovered his retirement savings have been depleted. Cohen thought the savings were worth more than $5 million US. The magazine says Cohen is virtually broke, faces a whopping tax bill and has had to take out a mortgage to pay legal costs. A forensic audit of his holdings apparently found massive improprieties. The 70-year-old poet, with homes in Montreal and Los Angeles, says he's devastated. He says his savings have been reduced to about $150,000. Cohen has raised questions about how his money was managed by a longtime trusted personal manager, who had signing authority on his accounts, and a financial adviser. There are reports that Cohen is suing his business manager and tax lawyer.

ECHO Echo echo and the BUNNYMEN Bunnymen bunnymen TOUR Tour tour

Echo & The Bunnymen, the second best band to ever come out of Liverpool, England, have announced they are releasing their 10th full length album Siberia in September, on Cooking Vinyl. Siberia's first single "Stormy Weather" precedes the album. Echo & The Bunnymen, also called Echo for short, are perhaps best remembered for their albums Heaven Up Here, which became the group's first top ten album on the UK charts, and Porcupine which peaked at #2 on those same charts. Ocean Rain became their first album to chart in the US Top 100, and their self titled grey album Echo and The Bunnymen reached #51 on the US charts. Beloved for their sweeping, cinematic music the band contributed the song "Bring On The Dancing Horses" to the John Hughes film Pretty In Pink in 1986 (Gosh, do you suppose there was a backlash like with The Shins and Garden State?). Echo's 1984 top ten hit "The Killing Moon" is featured in the opening sequence of Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko. The band currently consists of founding members Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, whose collaboration dates back nearly 30 years. Life hasn't been easy for the band over the years. In 1988, McCullough left the band to pursue a solo career. Drummer Pete de Frietas, who replaced the original drum machine "Echo," left the band in 1986 and died in a car accident in 1989. Sergeant and bassist Les Pattinson released the album Reverberation under the Echo & The Bunnymen name, with the singer Noel Burke filling in for McCulloch, in 1990. McCulloch and Sergeant reunited in 1994, and formed the band Electrifixion. In 1997, they were rejoined by Pattinson, and released the Echo & The Bunnymen album Evergreen. The last two Echo & The Bunnymen albums, What Are You Going To Do With Your Life? and Flowers were primarily recorded by the McCulloch/Sergeant team, and the duo were accompanied on tour by bassist Pete Wilkinson and drummer Simon Finley, who also played on McCulloch's 2003 solo album Slideling. Fellow 80's groups The Psychedelic Furs joined Echo on tour in 2001. Wilkinson and Finley round out the band for Siberia. Producer Hugh Jones twiddled the knobs as he did on Heaven Up Here. Sunglasses? Check. Jacket? Check. Tangible aura of cool? Check, and check. Suitcases packed, Echo & The Bunnymen set out on tour to promote Siberia this fall. For fans of Echo & The Bunnymen, the touring time can't come soon enough. McCulloch's voice, once a broad instrument, is now a cigarette addled croak reminiscent of a baby vampire, but he has not lost the emotion with which he infused his singing. Sergeant's guitar never picked up smoking, and it still rings well. The band has a couple of weeks of tourdates scheduled in Europe, and are also set to play the United States in November, and December. The dates offer a rare opportunity to see a band who once seemed destined for arena rock, and who surely deserved that kind of attention, in small, intimate settings. You shouldn't let the fact that Chris Martin and Moby enjoy their music stop you. Echo & The Bunnymen will finish out their tour at the Liverpool Academy in Liverpool. (via tiny mixed tapes)

My Morning Jacket suits up for fall tour

The new studio set, titled "Z," is scheduled for release on Oct. 4. Two days later, the band launches a headlining trek that is currently scheduled to run through mid-November. The itinerary is included below. Kathleen Edwards will open all but one of the October dates; Saul Williams signs on for the group's Halloween show in Boulder, CO, and remains on board for the November stops. Recorded in upstate New York with producer John Leckie, "Z" is My Morning Jacket's first album with new members Bo Koster (keys) and Carl Broemel (guitar); the two replaced original members Danny Cash and Johnny Quaid, respectively, who quit the group in January of last year. "We loved them immediately," singer/guitarist/songwriter Jim James said of his new bandmates in the group's current record-company bio. "It was like the band was its own force, wanting itself to go on, even down to finding these two people." With Koster and Broemel in tow, the Louisville, KY-based quintet aimed to make "Z" a departure from its previous works. "We wanted to make a record that grooved and swung, but wasn't trying to imitate classic soul," James said. "We wanted to keep an aspect of what we'd always done, but also make something you could dance to or listen to while driving home. Hip-hop and soul music are unifying people right now. I wanted to incorporate that into our music; to make this really sad, mysterious kind of dance music, something that really got into your butt, but also really got into your head and made you think."

Gang of Four regroups for the fall

Political post-punk band Gang of Four reunited earlier this year with a high-profile gig at the Coachella fest and a round of spring tour dates, setting the stage for a just-announced fall outing. Though Gang of Four had not played together since the early 1980s, the band's legend grew throughout the '80s, '90s and into this decade. Music journalists repeatedly note the band's influences on contemporary musicians such as Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads and The Rapture. Gang of Four--originally formed in Leeds, England in 1977--recently re-recorded tracks from its classic records--"Entertainment," "Solid Gold" and "Songs of the Free"--for a two-disc set titled "Whitey's Gift," set to be released Sept. 20 in the U.S. The second disc in the package will feature selected GoF tracks recorded by contemporary artists including Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Dandy Warhols. The album's release coincides with the fall tour, which features original GoF members Jon King, Andy Gill, Dave Allen and Hugo Burnham. The outing starts on the East Coast and then heads across the States, stopping primarily in major markets. Stops will include Philadelphia, New Orleans, Houston and Los Angeles. The band will also play Brooklyn, NY, at the Across the Pond Festival at Keyspan Park. The 17-date outing wraps up Oct. 21 in Anaheim, CA.

Ryan Adams And The Cardinals Cancel US Tour

Ryan Adams and The Cardinals have had to cancel their upcoming American tour after the whole band became ill while playing in Japan. The band were to play dates throughout the country but posting on their official website Adams apologised to fans saying: “Hey Everybody. The band got a bad bug on the way back from Japan that just keeps wearing us down.” “Really sorry about having to cancel the gigs, especially since I never have to cancel anything. But my voice is fried and the band was toast. And I never really recovered from my inner ear infection. Was trying to avoid cancelling anymore shows.” Adams has had to cancel several gigs so far in 2005 including a performance at Glastonbury, he added: “Unfortunately, I have infected cysts next to my ear canal, causing hearing, balance, and throat problems.” Ryan Adams and The Cardinals are set to release their second album of 2005, ‘September’, on September 26.

The Posies:: Every Kind of Light (Album Review)

The machinations of the David Geffen complex never did much for the Posies, the melancholy Hollies of Seattle. Yeah, “Golden Blunders” (off the slick, melodic Dear 23) got butchered by Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. And yeah, “Will You Ever Ease Your Mind?” (off the dour, prickly Amazing Disgrace) scored the ending credits for one episode of Daria. But the band was always destined to be a mostly-overlooked luxury item for the cult of witty pop, and since 1998’s expansive Success, they’ve consciously opted for that. The two chief songwriters toured several times filling holes in Big Star and regularly turn out scattershot solo albums. Admittedly, the collective batting average declines when they stray from the tent: Ken Stringfellow is prone to lightweight Eltonisms, and well-informed rock classicist Jon Auer loses his way a bit without Stringfellow’s finger-wagging humanism as an emotional anchor. As inconsistent as it is, Every Kind of Light, the first full-band Posies record of the century, curbs the pair’s excesses enough to reward repeat plays. But if you ain’t got time to listen to a Posies record repeatedly, never mind. Still there? Aces. Like N.W.A.’s Efil4zaggin and MC Ren’s Shock Of The Hour, Every Kind Of Light splits in two distinct halves. The first half revives the straight-ahead Chiltonian hooks and tender misgivings of the ole days. “All In A Day’s Work” provides a pithy tutorial for touring musicians, focusing on the boozy after-parties and suggesting that, in this “certain arrangement,” one might find oneself “blurring the line / between us and a good time.” As usual, an emotional intelligence rings through these words when they’re set to music, and it holds on the ominous “I Guess You’re Right,” a barbed memo to a nebulous lover / critic. The latter half lets Auer and Stringfellow indulge themselves - “I Finally Found a Jungle I Like!” is one of Auer’s party-time toss-offs, and “That Won’t Fly” is one of Stringfellow’s piano ballads. For the first time, the Posies get explicitly political. Check the West Coast country-rocker “Sweethearts Of Rodeo Drive” (“Humvees that drive our young boys to battle / You’ve got shiny wheels”) as it belittles the Golden State in the language of the Byrds. Now stationed in France, Stringfellow flicks a Bic in mourning for pre-9/11 America on “That Won’t Fly” (“It’s got me more than just down / We used to disagree so well / But that’s long gone”). Not every experiment fires at first, but The Posies know what they’re doing, and even the immediately ridiculous blue-eyed blues of “Could He Treat You Better” (which casts George W. Bush as America’s seedy boyfriend) comes into its own after a few spins. So, to take another ironic swing at this point, this is the sort of guitar pop that requires an investment. Old fans should eventually be delighted with it. Curious neophytes are encouraged to dig up Success or DGC’s surprisingly generous best-of, both of which can be fetched for under eight bones used. Judge: Punk landmark CBGB's can't be evicted

NEW YORK (AP) -- A civil court judge ruled Wednesday that the landmark punk club CBGB's can't be evicted from its Bowery location, saying it shouldn't be punished for not noticing it owed its landlord money. The ruling was a victory for the club where groups like the Ramones and Blondie defined the punk scene in the 1970s, but CBGB's future is still uncertain. Its lease with the Bowery Residents' Committee expires on August 31, and a renewal remains up in the air. The executive director of the Bowery Residents' Committee, Muzzy Rosenblatt, said he had not seen the ruling so he could not comment on it. "All we're looking for is a responsible tenant," he said of his group, which provides shelter for homeless people in the building that houses the club. The dispute involved about $100,000 in rent increases, interest and fees. The club says the increases went unpaid for four years because of a bookkeeping mix-up. CBGB's said it wasn't billed for the increases, but Rosenblatt said the increases were clearly stated in the lease. CBGB's rent is $19,000 a month. In her ruling, Judge Joan Kenney praised the club's impact on the neighborhood, which she said was plagued by "destitution, degradation and substance abuse" when the club opened in 1973. "CBGB has proven itself worthy of being recognized as a landmark -- a rare achievement for any commercial tenant in the ever diverse and competitive real estate market of New York City," she wrote in the ruling, a copy of which was provided to The Associated Press by the Save CBGB's Coalition. "It would be unconscionable for this court to allow petitioner to proceed with its intent to evict CBGB ... because it failed to notice that monies were outstanding for approximately four years," the judge wrote. As part of its proposal for a new lease, CBGB's has said it would find a third-party guarantor and would raise money for the committee every year with benefit concerts.

Death Cab For Cutie Unveils Fall Tour Plans

Death Cab For Cutie will begin a fall North American tour with an Oct. 3-4 stand at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom. The trek, which will feature Youth Group on the first portion and Stars on the second, comes in support of the group's Atlantic debut, "Plans.” Beforehand, Death Cab will also play Japan's Summer Sonic Festival on Aug. 13-14, New York's Central Park Summerstage with Stars and the Decemberists on Aug. 18 and the Austin City Limits festival on Sept. 24. “Plans” is due Aug. 30, but fans eager for an early taste can stream first single "Soul Meets Body" on Death Cab's official Web site. Only a handful of the songs on "Plans" have been played live so far, a decision bassist Nick Harmer attributes to having worn out songs from Death Cab's 2001 release "The Photo Album" while road-testing them before hitting the studio. "It was completely un-fun because everything was set in stone," Harmer said of the experience. "Everyone had it in their heads about how certain songs sounded. We decided then and there we were never going to play any music until the record came out." Harmer says the group is planning on hitting Europe early next year, but beyond that, "a lot will depend on what happens with the record. If it's doing well, we'll stick to our guns and stay with the plan we have. If it is doing incredibly well, maybe won't tour as much, and if it's doing terrible, maybe we'll tour even more!"

KRAFTWERK:: Minimum-Maximum (Album Review)

There's no good reason to explore once again the influence that Kraftwerk has had on any number of electronic bands producing music today. Techno, trance, EBM, IDM, and a nigh-infinite number of other acronyms owe a debt of gratitude to Messrs Hütter, Schneider, Hilpert and Schmitz. These guys were doing it in the mid-'70s, and if the rip-roaring success of their recent spat of live shows is any indication, they'll be doing it in the mid-'10s, too. Given the success of the live dates, it became obvious that yes, now, 35 years into their career, is the perfect time to release the first live album in the history of Kraftwerk. Of course, they do a fine job of it. Kraftwerk has been using computers, making digital music since before much of its current audience was born -- there's no way that the advent of modern digital production via computer would have escaped them. Appropriately utilizing the minimalist title of Minimum-Maximum (thankfully eschewing the gimmick of titling one disk "Minimum" and one disk "Maximum"), the live document that results is the perfect aural replication of the perfect Kraftwerk show. It's all perfectly recorded, perfectly produced, and perfectly tweaked for ultimate impact. Even the track selection is perfect. And should we expect any less from Kraftwerk? The Kraftwerkian devotion to computers is effectively reflected via the calculated feel of the entire album output. So what's the problem? It's too, uh, perfect. Minimum-Maximum was created to emulate an actual live show, but it is actually derived from shows all over last year's world tour. Via the expert mixing, there's hardly a difference in sound quality to be heard from one song to the next, but there's no doubt that they took the best-performed version of most of the songs here, with a few exeptions left in for sentimental reasons (i.e. "Tour de France" is from Paris, "Dentaku" is from Tokyo, and so on). It removes anything resembling spontaneity from the equation, which is fine and all, but it subtly removes the "live" from "live album". In a similar vein, there are places in which the sound of the crowd is turned up, the between-song cheers and the Tokyo singalong of "Dentaku" given the most obvious emphasis. The intention is to make the set sound like an honest-to-God live show, but it's difficult to shake the image of a studio-bound fellow turning up the volume knob on the parts where audience participation is desirable. The other problem lies in the fact that Minimum-Maximum is a document strictly for our ears. So much of the modern Kraftwerk show is a visual spectacle, that removing the visual from the equation leaves a somewhat empty feeling. Anyone who wants to get a true picture of the Kraftwerk live experience will undoubtedly be left wishing for an accompanying DVD that could explain a bit more of what was going on. So much of Kraftwerk's performance is pre-recorded anyway, that really, it might have made more sense to create (another) album of remade versions of old hits, updated for the 21st century. That said, this is still Kraftwerk, and these are still great songs. The four (or five, if you count "Dentaku") song Computer World stretch on disc two embodies everything great about Kraftwerk, from the vocoded vocals to the surprisingly human melodies. Songs like "Metal on Metal" and the beefed-up version of "The Man Machine" that opens the first disc give all the evil industrial kids producing EBM a run for their money. "Tour de France" is as danceable as ever. And creating a barbershop quartet out of synthetic voices in "Autobahn" is a stroke of genius that I'm thrilled made the final cut. The music is wonderful, and deserves to be heard in this or any form. So go ahead -- buy it as a document of the genius that is Kraftwerk. Whatever you do, however, don't buy it expecting anything approximating the Kraftwerk live experience. (by Mike Schiller)

Absolutely Kosher offers $100,000 for the rights to the first two Wrens albums

What the? Absolutely Kosher has loot like that? No way. Press release below...
Wind-Up Records has just formally turned down Absolutely Kosher Records' offer of $100,000 to purchase the rights to the Wrens' first two albums, Silver and Secaucus. This is the fourth and most substantial offer Absolutely Kosher has made to acquire the records since the label signed the Wrens in late 2002/early 2003. Two previous attempts to license the albums (rather than buy them) were quashed when Wind-Up insisted an advance given to the band in 1996 be repaid before licensing negotiations proceed. When it became clear that the history between Wind-Up and the Wrens was dictating that label's business decisions, Absolutely Kosher was left with no choice but to try and buy the albums outright. The latest offer of one hundred thousand dollars (yes, $100,000.00) was made several weeks ago just prior to the band's landmark performance at Chicago's Intonation Festival in front of 16,000 people and was rejected this morning. Absolutely Kosher label head Cory Brown said of the conversation, "Even their licensing person seemed surprised that the higher-ups had turned down the offer. She said she would keep me posted if there had been any progress and that we could revisit this in six months. She said that Wind-Up might reissue the albums, but no definite plans had been made or she, at least, hadn't been made privy to them. I told her that as much as it would be great to see these records in print eventually, the time to do so was now and we were the label to do it." Both Silver (1994) and Secaucus (1996) were released on Grass Records, also home to such bands as Brainiac (pre-Enon) and Commander Venus (pre-Bright Eyes). Grass was purchased by industry mogul Allen Meltzer, fresh off the sale of the Alliance Entertainment Corporation, a conglomerate of one-stop distributors he founded in the early 1990s. Meltzer transformed the label into Wind-Up not long after the Wrens decided against signing the rather binding multi-album deal the label had laid before them. Both albums (as well as the bulk of the Grass catalog) promptly went out of print and have been fetching anywhere from $35 to $160 on e-Bay, Amazon and the like. The Wrens would have likely been forgotten by all but a few avid fans were it not for the release and remarkable grass roots success of their third album, The Meadowlands, released by Absolutely Kosher in September 2003. "The public deserves to be able to buy Silver and Secaucus for a reasonable price and no label is better suited to put them back in print than The Wrens' active label partner, Absolutely Kosher Records. Wind-Up squandered their opportunity with the Wrens years ago and have done absolutely nothing in the two years since The Meadowlands' break-out success. The expectation that they would put the proper time and energy into these reissues, if they even choose to pursue them at all, is unrealistic. Several commercially generous offers have been made for records which are doing nothing but collecting dust in their vaults and each time they have turned them down with no counter-offer. Perhaps it's vague self-interest, perhaps it's spite. Either way, it borders on criminal both morally (in terms of what's best for the fans and the band) and fiscally (in terms of what's best for the label). We'd like to call on all Wrens fans and people concerned with artists' rights to write a letter to Wind-Up Records urging them to accept Absolutely Kosher's most recent offer and FREE THE WRENS' BACK CATALOGUE. Here's their address:

New Mudhoney in the works

Veteran Seattle rock act Mudhoney is in the studio working on its first album since 2002's "Since We've Become Translucent." The as-yet-untitled set is expected to be released in early 2006 via Sub Pop. "The stuff I've heard is amazing," Sub Pop co-founder/president Jonathan Poneman said. "It's more political than they have been. It's not overtly political, like protest songs, but it is great Mudhoney." The group will play three U.K. shows next month: Sept. 15 in Dublin and Sept. 16-17 in London.

'Chappelle's Show' is over

NEW YORK (AP) -- Time to face the facts: Dave Chappelle's hit Comedy Central series isn't coming back, says one of its stars. 'Chappelle's Show' is over, man. Done," comic Charlie Murphy told TV Guide. "It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth." Chappelle's sudden "spiritual retreat" to South Africa on the eve of his show's third season has left the series in limbo since May. About half of a new season had been filmed before Chappelle left, Murphy said. "I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody," he said. " 'Chappelle's Show' was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick." Comedy Central has always said the door is open for Chappelle to return, spokeswoman Aileen Budow said Wednesday. Network chief Doug Herzog met with Chappelle on June 3, but that has been their last communication, she said. Murphy, the older brother of comic Eddie Murphy, said his two seasons with Chappelle made him a star. "Now I can go out and do stand-up," he said. "I'm getting movie offers. It's off the hook. Me getting to the next level or whatever's going to happen is going to come from the next things I do, but 'Chappelle's Show' served its purpose and I'll always be grateful.

Prefuse 73:: Reads The Books (Album Review)

Talk about thwarted expectations! In a tantalizing teaser posted at the Prefuse 73 site last October, Scott Herren described his soon-to-be-released project with The Books (Massachusetts duo Nick Willscher Zammuto and Paul De Jong) as follows: ""Why do they need to collab with me or need beats at all?" - So you can bang The Books in your Jeep!!!!! CMON!" Forgive me, then, for expecting a disc full of potent bangers similar to "Pagina Dos," the stunning collab originally heard on Surrounded by Silence and now reprised on the 23-minute Prefuse 73 Reads The Books alongside six others (actually seven, but the 10-second intro's a fragment of no consequence). As one would expect, the fusion of The Books' folk stylings and traditional instrumentation (cellos, banjos, clavinets) with Prefuse's hip-hop stutter-funk produces fresh moments, just not as many as desired. While the merging of bluegrass banjo-picking with buttery vocal hooks and snapping beats in "Pagina Dos" remains alluring, none of the other material comes close to matching it: "Pagina Tres" and "Pagina Cuatro" find Herren in hallucinatory collage mode, while loping head-nodders like "Pagina Cinco" and "Pagina Siete" are credible but, by Prefuse standards, hardly spectacular; the set does, however, exit on a high when Claudia Maria Deheza's sparkling vocal breathes sensuous life into the languid "Pagina Ocho." But even with the conciliation of expectation to reality, the EP seems ultimately less an essential Prefuse document than an indulgent curio that includes just enough memorable moments to satisfy the completist. Some of the top names in rock have signed on for the inaugural Across the Pond concerts, which will be held simultaneously at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, N.Y.,. Both venues will host shows on Oct. 1-2, with the Pixies, Oasis, the Killers and Beck set to appear on yet-to-be-determined bills. Other early confirmations for Across the Pond include Gang Of Four, Jet, Belle & Sebastian and the New York Dolls. "The complete lineup of talent will be staggering," says Jim Glancy, president of show promoter Ron Delsener Presents. A discount will be available for fans purchasing tickets to more than one show; fans can also opt to attend a single concert. Across the Pond joins the just announced Download Festival as new entrants to the American festival market. That event will be held Oct. 8 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., and feature the Killers, Modest Mouse, Doves and the Arcade Fire, among others. The Pixies' Joey Santiago Scores Weeds

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This apparently isn't the case for Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago, who's been taking time between tourdates to write the score for the new Showtime original comedy series Weeds. Premiering on August 10, the show stars Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, and Kevin Nealon and chronicles a "typical" suburban California family. And by "typical" we mean Parker's recently-widowed character begins dealing pot to put food on the table. "This is a lot of fun and something I can continue to do when I'll embarrass my kids by being on stage," said Santiago, who's apparently taken quite a fancy to composing music atypical to the Pixies' style. "Scoring a TV series is a lot different than playing in a band, the pace and deadlines are completely different, but once you get into the groove, it's really great." This project will add to his growing list of scores which include those for the Fox TV series Undeclared and the film Crime in Suburbia. He also recently wrote the theme for Cartoon Network's Sunday Pants -- now you have even more excuses to prolong your to transition to adult television. As a side note, Santiago and the rest of the Pixies will be performing their first-ever live acoustic set at next month's Newport Folk Festival. The band is also preparing to begin recording their first album in nearly fourteen years.
