The White Stripes - Get Behind Me, Satan (Album Review)

Everything you know is wrong. Thought every White Stripes album was full of raw, visceral blues workouts? Thought Jack White was one of the greatest guitarists of his generation and every track showcased his awe inspiring ability? Well, think again, for Get Behind Me Satan is a very different beast. Let's get this straight from the start. A lot of White Stripes fans are going to be hugely puzzled by this follow up to the planet shagging success story that was Elephant. And a fair proportion of those are going to absolutely hate it. For a start, there's only three tracks based around the guitar, with most songs written for the piano. And secondly, this is the Stripes' most diverse album yet - they've dropped the garage sound and embraced bluegrass, country music and even disco. To longstanding observers of Jack and Meg though, this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Jack's work on the Cold Mountain soundtrack and his production for Loretta Lynn had demonstrated his love of bluegrass, and let's face it, if he'd just produced Elephant Part II he'd have been in danger of disappointing just as many fans as The Strokes did with Room On Fire. So put aside your disappointment at the lack of squealing guitar solos and take Get Behind Me Satan for what it is - another massive step forward in the evolution of a truly great band. The single Blue Orchid is pretty much unrepresentative of the album, but its vicious guitar riff and Jack's falsetto give it an addictive feel. It conjures up visions of behemoths of '70s rock like Deep Purple, but with a whole new spin for the 21st century. Far more typical of the album is the wonderful disco-influenced My Doorbell, with its juddery piano riff and percussion and Jack half-rapping in a style reminiscent of Beck. It's totally different to what you'd expect from the Stripes and sounds wonderfully joyous. Even more bizarre is The Nurse, employing chimes and a marimba to create a nice little campfire vibe, before Meg smacks her drumkit as hard as she can to create unsettling bursts of noise between the verses. The standout track is probably Take Take Take, a tale of a fan's encounter with Rita Hayworth in a bar which turns sour when Ms Hayworth takes her leave. "She didn't even care that I was even there/What a horrible feeling" whines Jack's character in a manner similar to Eminem's Stan. The song mixes jangly acoustic guitars with an angular piano riff and when Jack spits out "Take, take, take" over the chorus, the effect is quite sinister. Elsewhere, Little Ghost is a charming little traditional country ditty, which together with I'm Lonely (But I'm Not That Lonely Yet), show what a huge influence Loretta Lynn is on the band. Fans of Jack's guitar will also be relieved to hear Instinct Blues, which is the closest thing you'll hear to Hendrix coming back down to Earth. Red Rain, a bluesy workout, is another chance to appreciate Jack's guitar work, but its clear that Jack and Meg are more interested in exploring different styles of music on this album. The old Stripes motifs are all present and correct as well - the obsession with the number three (all songs were written on three instruments, piano, acoustic guitar and marimba), the colour scheme of red, white and black and the old, long disproved, references to Jack and Meg's siblinghood - the final track, the wonderful I'm Lonely has the best lyric on the album in "I love my sister, Lord knows how I've missed her...I sometimes get jealous of all her little pets, I'm lonely but I ain't that lonely yet". With no low points at all (well, maybe Meg's, shall we say idiosyncratic, vocal performance on Passive Manipulation), this is another superb album from The White Stripes. Some may bemoan the lack of guitar, but this is obviously the sound of the band evolving and moving on. THE FLAMING LIPS TO RELEASE NEW DVD

THE FLAMING LIPS are set to release a career-spanning DVD collection of 19 of the band’s videos on August 22.’VOID (Video Overview In Declaration)’ will include ’Mr. Ambulance Driver’ - the Grammy nominated promo taken from their eagerly awaited new album ’At War With The Mystics’, which is due for release in spring 2006. The song will also be heard on the soundtrack to the upcoming film ’Wedding Crashers’. Other videos set for inclusion on ’Void (Video Overview In Declaration)’ include ’Waiting For A Superman’ from 1999’s The Soft Bulletin’, ’Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ the title track from their 2002 album, the 1994 single ’She Don’t Use Jelly’, along with both US and UK versions of ’Do You Realize?’. The band’s own long-awaited feature film, ’Christmas On Mars’ is tentatively scheduled for a mid-2006 release.

Dischord issues full statement about Nike controversy

Many people have now noticed that Nike has appropriated the Minor Threat artwork and logo for a new skateboard demo / ad campaign. To set the record straight -- Nike never contacted Dischord to obtain permission to use this imagery, nor was any permission granted. Simply put, Nike stole it and we're not happy about it. We are not yet sure what options, if any, we have to stop Nike from using our images to sell their shoes, but if you would like to direct your complaints to Nike that would be a good place to start. To longtime fans and supporters of Minor Threat and Dischord this must seem like just another familiar example of mainstream corporations attempting to to assimilate underground culture to turn a buck. However it is more disheartening to us to think that Nike may be successful in using this imagery to fool kids, just beginning to becoming familiar with skate culture, underground music and DIY ideals, into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission. In any regard, we would like to thank the many people who have written to us in the last several days to express their outrage, support and encouragement.

• Pop-punk act Rufio had its entired touring trailer stolen this week after a show in Montreal. With no insurance policy, the band is begging fans to help them make up the loss: "These people took our livelihoods and everything we have from us," they wrote recently in a statement. The group has been opening for Alkaline Trio.

• In other band disaster news, Ash's tour bus recently burst into flames. While traveling to San Francisco, the van began filling up with smoke. The fire was extinguished and another bus found; however, that bus also caught on fire, ending up in ashes. The luckless group eventually made it to the show - five hours late and sans equipment.

• Rhino is releasing a 100-song Ramones box set. Entitled Weird Tales of the Romanes, the three-disc (and DVD) package includes all the classics - "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Judy is a Punk," "I Wanna Be Sedated" - as well as loads of B-sides, videos, and covers. The box includes a comic book with tributes from 25 artists, including Rick Altergott, John Pound, and Sergio Aragones. Expected price is $65; more info at Rhino's site. (NEWS VIA DOA)

New Super Furry Animals Album !

Acclaimed Welsh quintet Super Furry Animals will release their seventh studio album, Love Kraft, this August 15th. Recorded over three weeks in Spain with a predominance of string arrangements and the occasional assistance of a 100-member Catalan choir, Love Kraft promises to be less overtly political than 2003's Phantom Power. "The world is so ridiculously dark at the moment," Frontman Gruff Rhys explains, "when you don’t know where to start politically it's sometimes easier to become inward looking or to enter the world of the imagination." Get the first inward look into SFA's imagined world with the lead single "Laser Beam," adding to radio August 2nd.

ELVIS COSTELLO:: KING OF AMERICA (RE-ISSUE ALBUM REVIEW)

1985 was Elvis Costello's year, releasing not one, but two of his most cherished works. "Blood & Chocolate," the rocking swansong with the Attractions, and "KING OF AMERICA," a countrified, roots-rock extravaganza, featuring such legends as James Burton, Earl Palmer, Ray Brown, Jim Keltner, and Jerry Scheff as his backing band. "KING OF AMERICA" is regarded by many, to be Costello's masterpiece. I don't disagree. From the sway of the opener "Brilliant Mistake," an instant classic, to such heartbreaking ballads as "Poisoned Rose," and "I'll Wear It Proudly," with such shitkickers as "Lovable" and "The Big Light" thrown in along the way, KOA was Costello's transition from the British punk who rode in on the mid 70's New Wave, to respected adult, singer-songwriter. It was a sign of things to come, laying the foundation for Costello to be accepted, although not necessarily with welcome reviews, for experimenting and recording all genres of music, from jazz to classical over the coming years. Rhino Records' reissue campaign continues with this release, adding an additional CD chock full of piano demos, outtakes, and b-sides, all of which are as strong as the finished product.

John Hiatt:: Master of Disaster (Album Review)

1987's "Bring The Family" put John Hiatt on the map. Writing songs for others and releasing a bunch of decent, but somewhat forgettable albums from as early as 1974, it was Hiatt's collaboration with Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner on "Bring The Family" that opened the ears of just about everyone. A near-perfect release, very similar in style to Elvis Costello's "King Of America." Since then, Hiatt has unfortunately released too many records with too many of the same themes, sounds, and ideas. And his voice has not aged well, becoming more nasal than what is comfortable. At times he makes Dylan sound like Joni Mitchell. Sure, most of Hiatt's mediocre releases are better than most people's strong releases. And along the way, he has given us some damn fine music. (listen to "Crossing Muddy Water) But, the fact remains, Hiatt needs a winner. "Master Of Disaster" is that winner. Well...almost. Another collaboration, this time with the Dickinson boys, better known as the North Mississippi All Stars, Hiatt's new record does not break any new ground. As a matter of fact, on first listen, you wouldn't think it was a new record at all. But I stayed with it. I respect Hiatt and I've loved the work of the NMAS. To quote a friend of mine, "the new Hiatt is oddly terrific." Still not sure what that means, but I agree. The record works. (review by Sal: NYCD)

1949 - Lionel Richie is born in Tuskegee, Ala., the son of a retired U.S. Army captain and a teacher. The former lead singer of the Commodores has five No. 1 hits, including "Endless Love." Kingblind: Music news that you can use

* British rock act the Darkness has named Richie Edwards as its full-time bass player. For the past two years, Edwards has toured extensively with the band as its guitar technician. The former Onion Trump member has also assisted the Darkness with its equipment in the studio throughout the recording of its as-yet-untitled new album. Due in the fall, the set is the follow-up to follow-up to the Darkness' multi-platinum debut "Permission To Land" (Must Destroy/Atlantic), which has sold 675,000 units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The band had auditioned a number of potential bassists since the March departure of Frankie Poullain.

* Kinks leader Ray Davies has signed with V2, which will on Sept. 6 release his long-in-the-works, as-yet-untitled solo debut. A spokesperson says the track list has not been confirmed, but Davies has been performing a number of new tunes in recent live shows, including "The Morning After" and "The Tourist."

Dinosaur Jr.'s reunion outing sprouts Western a leg

Reunited noise-rockers Dinosaur Jr. (tickets | bio), who previously announced plans for a July tour of the East and Midwest, have now lined up a round of August shows in the western U.S. and Canada. The Western leg, which will wind its way north from Las Vegas to Vancouver, is scheduled to visit clubs in eight cities. Ticket on-sale information for the new dates, provided by the band's publicist, is in the itinerary below. Pre-sale tickets will also be available; details are at the band's website. Dinosaur Jr. announced in February that it was reuniting for a television performance and appearances at festivals in the U.K. and Japan. A North American tour announcement followed. Dinosaur Jr.'s original lineup--frontman/guitarist J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph--split in 1989, though Mascis continued to record under the Dinosaur Jr. name for several more years. Merge Records reissued the first three Dinosaur Jr. albums--"Dinosaur," "You're Living All Over Me" and "Bug"--in March.

Thrill Jockey Signs Tom Verlaine

Thrill Jockey has signed Television singer/guitarist Tom Verlaine, whose label debut is expected in early 2006. In the meantime, Thrill Jockey is planning a fall reissue of Verlaine's 1992 instrumental album, "Warm and Cool," originally released by Rykodisc. "Warm and Cool" finds the artist backed by Television bassist Fred Smith and drummer Billy Ficca, as well as Patti Smith Band drummer Jay Dee Daugherty and bassist Patrick A. Derivaz. It was released a few months before Television's self-titled comeback album for Capitol. The original 14-track album will be expanded with eight bonus tracks that comprise improvised "pieces that could have been much longer but for me had a charm being brief," Verlaine says in the liner notes. Television has a handful of European dates on calendar this summer, including appearances next week at the Patti Smith-curated Meltdown Festival in London. (Via Billboard)

Homme Sentenced for Brawl

QOTSA frontman must undergo anger management after attacking Dwarves singer Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme has pleaded no contest to two counts of misdemeanor battery stemming from an attack on Dwarves singer Blag Dahlia at a November Dwarves show in Los Angeles. Homme was placed on summary probation for thirty-six months. He was also ordered to stay 100 yards away from Dahlia and the Dragonfly club (where the incident occurred), to not possess deadly weapons, to perform community service and to enroll in both an anger management program and a sixty-day residential rehab facility. (The records did not say what the rehab was for.) In exchange for Homme's plea, two other charges (battery and assault with a deadly weapon) were dropped. Homme and Blag are former friends believed to have fallen out over Nick Oliveri, an ex-member of the Dwarves who was hired (and later fired) by QOTSA. The lyrics from "Massacre," off the Dwarves' 2004 CD The Dwarves Must Die, include: "This one goes out to Queens of the Trust Fund/You slept on my floor/And now I'm sleeping through your motherfucking records." Oliveri appears on the track. Witnesses to the attack say Homme showed up backstage and poured a bottle of beer over Dahlia's head while singing, "Whatcha gonna do?" A shoving match ensued, and Homme struck Dahlia over the head with the bottle. Despite the blow, Dahlia performed as planned. After the show, his wife drove him to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he received stitches. Police were not called at the time, but security removed Homme from the venue. Dahlia (a.k.a. Paul Cafaro) pressed charges on December 29th.Homme is due back at the Hollywood Courthouse, Division 79, on July 27th to prove that he enrolled in both anger management and rehab.

Spoon:: Gimme Fiction (Album Review)

Like some sort of glorious indie-rock dairy farm, Spoon have been churning out the creamiest, oh the very creamiest of future indie-rock classics for over a decade, plying the world with the kind of artful, succinct pop that hoards of dull indie acts strive for and fail to produce with exhausting consistency. 'Gimme Fiction' is a nocturnal, introspective refinement of previous releases that still capitalises on Britt Daniel's classic pop song writing and sonic inventiveness. Assorted studio noise, whispered words and brief pieces of sound you can't place adorn these songs like subtle accessories. The strings that punctuate the brooding punch of 'The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentine'; Jim Eno's concise, artful fills; Daniel's mock-Prince falsetto that struts alongside 'I Turn My Camera On' - everything has air to breathe and space to inhabit. You know a good sound when you want to take out a second mortgage to buy headphones good enough to appreciate it. Not everything here is as fleeting as Spoon fans may have come to expect, however. While this works to the advantage for tracks like 'My Mathematical Mind' - a rumbling chorus-free piano epic that will probably kill live audiences - the ponderous, repetitive nature of 'Was It You?' feels almost throwaway and its curious background noise just fails to save it from obscurity. This is only a minor discrepancy, considering just how stellar these songs are at their best. The elastic bounce that consumes 'The Delicate Place' or the gently rollicking peacock strut of 'Sister Jack' are proof that Spoon are still masters of their craft. Look to the slow-burning opener 'The Beast And Dragon, Adored' for summary. "I'm going back to the water/Been land-locked too long" sings Britt - three years after 'Kill The Moonlight' and Spoon remain consistently inventive and engaging in both feeling and technique.

RADIOHEAD BREAK SILENCE OVER NEW ALBUM

RADIOHEAD have broken the silence over their new album. Singer Thom Yorke has said sessions for their new album remind him of working on ‘Kid A’. The band recently regrouped to start rehearsing and recording new songs for the follow-up to 2003’s ‘Hail To The Thief'.The album, not due until next year, will be the band’s seventh. Yorke said that early sessions had seen the band changing the way they work, reminding him of the change between 1997 LP ‘OK Computer’ and ‘Kid A’. He said: “It’s going well. It’s a bit like ‘Kid A’ – we’re going through a period of change. But that’s good. We’ll get there” Songs touted for the record include ‘House Of Cards’, ‘Glass Flowers’, ‘Reckoner’ and ‘Arpeggi’. Smog:: A River Ain't Too Much Love (Album Review)

A billion albums into his career and one knows what to expect from Smog. It's country, alt-country, urbane folk, whatever you want to call it. Largely it's usually great, but after the slight disappointment of previous LP 'Supper', it's nice to hear that whilst doing the same thing as ever, this is in the highest bracket of that field's work. 'A River Ain't Much Too Love' is yet another collection of sombre-to-wistful vignettes, this time though, there's chinks of lights streaming through the songs. By no means a party record, it's at least midly infused with the summer. Bottles of gin in the park summer, but good weather nontheless. 'The Well' is positively jaunty with Bill Callahan offering the refrain "I watched that drip but it would not drop" in the midst of a down-home story about, well, a well. In fact, it's so (relatively) upbeat that Smog let's off a couple of "hoooos" as the temple reaches a previously-unheard of mid-tempo. 'Rock Bottom Riser' has a beautiful feel, with Callahan crooning of his adventures "diving, diving... diving", all lullaby-led piano chords and sparse brush work. 'I Feel Like The Mother Of The World' is full of rusty ringing strings and wonderous notions of "when I was young I got into the bath with my sister" and has more life in it than many whole Smog albums previous. Fans of the shuffling, gossamer 'barely-there' Callahan will be well catered for with 'In The Pines' and 'Drinking In The Dam', a song which is filled with beautiful ghostly sighs, building to the sort of full-bodied tunes that so rarely get an look-in on Smog's LPs. Pleasantly, 'A River...' is all the better for it. It's never too late to introduce the joys of Smog to the world at large - there's no real start and end to his body of work bar the banalities of chronology - and with 'River Ain't Too Much Love', he's reached another career peak to match that of 1999's 'Knock Knock'.

Pete DohertyPete Doherty has accused Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand for plagiarising on their hit ‘Take Me Out’. The Babyshambles frontman has said that the band ripped off a Ringo Starr track. He believes the ‘Take Me Out’ features the same song structure as Ringo’s 1972 hit ‘Back Off Boogaloo’, reports Breaking News. He said: "’Take Me Out's’ Ringo Starr, isn't it? It's exactly the same riff. "What was it Oscar Wilde said? Amateurs borrow but geniuses steal."

Jack White Marries Model From Stripes' 'Blue Orchid' Video

Less than one week after the band surprised fans by announcing plans for a North American tour while in the wilds of Brazil comes an announcement that Stripes frontman Jack White has married model Karen Elson in the Brazilian city of Manaus. The band's publicist confirmed a posting on WhiteStripes.com, which read, in part: "Karen Elson and Jack White were married yesterday (June 1) on the confluence of three rivers — the Rio Negro, the Solimones and the Amazon ... by a traditional shaman priest on a canoe at the exact point where the three rivers met. ... The ceremony was immediately followed by a blessing by a priest at a Catholic cathedral called Igreja Matric." White Stripes manager Ian Montone served as White's best man, while Stripes drummer Meg White was Elson's maid of honor. If Elson looks a bit familiar to Stripes fans, well, perhaps they've caught a glimpse of the band's new video, "Blue Orchid," which features Elson as a ghostly apparition in ultra-high heels But as with most things Stripes-related, the news of Jack's nuptials should be taken with a grain of salt. The wedding announcement concludes with the statement that "this is the first marriage for both newlyweds," which isn't true. In 2003 The Detroit Free Press uncovered a 1996 marriage document between Jack and Meg (filed under their real names, John Anthony Gillis and Megan Martha White). They were divorced four years later. But despite all that, the Stripes' publicist insisted the announcement is true and that White and Elson are now officially married. White's marriage comes less than a month after former girlfriend actress Renée Zellweger tied the knot with country musician Kenny Chesney in a surprise ceremony on the island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Publisher sues Warner Music over Waits tunes

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Third Story Music, a Los Angeles-based music publishing firm and the successor to the production company that managed singer-songwriter Tom Waits early in his career, has filed a federal suit against Warner Music Group, alleging that Waits has been shortchanged on the sale of digital downloads. The action, filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles on Tuesday, stems from 1972 and 1977 contracts signed by Third Story principal Herb Cohen and Warner-owned Asylum Records regarding Waits' services. The Waits recordings at issue include such early albums as "Closing Time," "The Heart of Saturday Night," "Small Change" and "Heartattack and Vine." According to the suit, under the terms of the two contracts, Waits was entitled to royalties of either 25% or 50% from revenues derived from third-party licenses. Third Story maintains that digital music downloads constitute a form of third-party license, and that Waits is entitled to payment at that level. In 2003-04 royalty statements to Third Story, WMG computed royalties from Waits' digital download sales at the same (and much lower) rate as royalties from the sale of physical product. Under the terms of the '70s Asylum contracts regarding album sales, Waits would be entitled to either 9% or 13% of the 67 cents received by WMG from each 99-cent download. The action says that in February, Third Story sent a formal notice questioning the accuracy of royalty statements to WMG. The music company replied in March that downloads "are sold to customers such as iTunes and Listen.com just as physical product is sold to…Best Buy and Virgin." Third Story seeks a declaration that compensation for downloads is governed by the third-party license provisions of the Asylum agreements, and damages in an amount to be determined. A spokeswoman for WMG, which recently went public about a year after being sold to a private investor group by Time Warner Inc., said the company had no comment.
