The Mountain Goats:: The Sunset Tree (Album Review)

Once upon a time, the “Profiles” section of the New Yorker offered a fascinating look into the biographies of the famous, like Johnny Carson, and the not-quite-as-famous, like David Brower, former executive director of the Sierra Club. I’ve always thought John Darnielle, who records as the Mountain Goats, would be a good candidate for an in-depth literary profile. At first, this judgment was simply a reflection of his being a square peg in the round hole of the indie rock world. Darnielle has always written with a greater attention to descriptive detail, narrative perspective, semantic coherence, and similar critical concerns than any other underground artist, or any of the folk songwriters of previous eras. Yet he also recorded these songs on a department store boom box, leaving his carefully considered lit-rock at the mercy of his ultra lo-fidelity equipment. Plus, with a steady job as a psychiatric nurse working with abused children, a website on which he used close-reading techniques to dissect gangster rap and hair metal, and a fairly nonchalant public persona, he stood outside the traditional rock and roll lifestyle. Darnielle’s biography has only gotten more interesting, however, with his last two releases, We Shall All Be Healed and now The Sunset Tree. Both are autobiographical albums about his early life: We Shall All Be Healed recalls Darnielle’s time amongst a circle of meth users, and the 13 songs on The Sunset Tree describe Darnielle’s childhood, in particular the years of physical abuse he suffered at the hands of his stepfather. It’s ironic, to say the least, that John Darnielle has been so prolific for so many years and yet we are just learning that he has so much to say. Since 2002’s Tallahasse, his first record for 4AD, Darnielle has left behind the boom box and begun recording in a studio. The Sunset Tree and We Shall All Be Healed were both produced by John Vanderslice, and fellow Mountain Goats on this record include cellist Erik Friedlander and bass player Peter Hughes. The studio proficiency helps. Whereas on, say, All Hail West Texas one might notice that the lyrics tell an interesting or funny story while the music depends upon a fairly simple chord progression, now one notices that the songs have space for cello and piano and are, in truth, really good. “This Year” has an addictive bass run, while “Magpie” is a duet for a guitar and what sounds like a mandolin. As always, however, Darnielle’s songs are just showcases for his lyrics and his own slightly nasal singing. He’s forthright with the details of his youth, shifting back and forth between descriptions of his stepfather’s attacks and his internal responses. “I’m in the living room watching the Watergate hearings while my stepfather yells at my mother,” he sings on “Dance Music,” “launches a glass across the room straight at her head,” and he runs upstairs to the sanctuary of his record player: “So this is what the volume knob’s for?” On “Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod,” he reminds himself that he will, eventually, make it out of his house alive: “Held under these smothering waves by your strong and thick-veined hand / but one of these days I’m going to wriggle up on dry land.” The Sunset Tree’s final song, “Pale Green Things,” may be the most complex. Shortly after learning about his stepfather’s death during a phone call with his sister, he flashes back to a different memory, a visit to a racetrack in southern California. “I turned it over in my mind, like a living Chinese finger trap.” Just like We Shall All Be Healed, The Sunset Tree is worlds removed from the days when John Darnielle was following fictional characters through the “Going To…” series, or writing about teenage metalheads. For a musician who has built a fairly sizable following telling those sorts of stories, he’s making a bold move by switching to more autobiographical work. Novelists, however, tend to write their memoirs once they’ve honed their storytelling abilities through fiction. Clearly, John Darnielle has a life story that’s inspiring as more than just the tale of an unconventional indie rock hero. Now that he’s making his best music, I think we can all be glad that he’s finally telling it.

The 2-CD sets feature previously unreleased tracks, new stereo mixes, restored original sequencing and new liner notes by their original producer, Tony Visconti. Recorded in July 1974, David Live is an enthralling documentation of Bowie's innovative and extraordinary 1974 Diamond Dogs tour. Bowie started the tour as a glam rock king, but as the tour progressed, he adopted a new sound and a new look, best described as Phillysoul. Early in 1978, David Bowie began rehearsals for what was to be his biggest tour to that point of his career. The majority of the show's setlist was to be comprised primarily from the Low & Heroes albums, but Bowie surprised his fans by including a selection of songs from the Ziggy Stardust album, rearranged to reflect his new futuristic synthesizer sound. This tour is captured in this 1978 live album Stage.

Sean Lennon attempts to start brawl at music festival

Sean Lennon attempted to start a brawl after performing at a music festival this weekend, it has been claimed. The son of the John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who is also a musician, is reported to have picked a fight with another performer - because he didn't like his hair cut. Singer Jayne County, whose bassist was the victim of the abuse, said she was furious that the late Beatle's son had behaved in such a way. The singer fumed: "It angers me that Sean Lennon, son of John - a member of the Beatles, who I love - can be so drunk and narrow minded to pick a fight with my bass player because he's got a Mohawk." Jayne continued saying she believed Lennon was jealous because of the female attention her band were receiving saying he was "insecure". She said: "He was surrounded by girls and thought my bass player was competition so he started picking on him. The incident occurred at the All Tomorrows Parties music festival - held in Sussex at the weekend - where both he and Yoko were performing, and Jayne County added that Lennon's words came to causing a violent scuffle. She continued: "Security had to step in and separate them or blood would have spilled."

Tom Waits driven to anger

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tom Waits' next boozy, bluesy tune might be about European car manufacturers. The gravel-voiced Waits says Opel, a European division of General Motors, is running a TV commercial in Scandinavia with a soundtrack resembling his style and sound. And he's not happy about it. "Commercials are an unnatural use of my work," the 55-year-old singer said in a statement. "It's like having a cow's udder sewn to the side of my face. Painful and humiliating." Waits said he's never allowed his voice or music to be used in commercials "and I have lawyers over there investigating my options." Opel denies any intention to mimic Waits. The carmaker said the music in the ad is a Brahms composition with a Frankfurt, Germany-based singer giving a "rough voice interpretation for the 'Wiegenlied' theme in English." The company said Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was the only celebrity approached for the ad. "We actually are surprised about the fact that Tom Waits considers the music ... a potential misuse of his voice and style of singing," Opel said in a statement Thursday. "We have been assured by our agency partners that Tom Waits has not been approached at any time within this project." In 1992, Waits was awarded $2.5 million in damages from Frito-Lay after successfully arguing that another singer was hired to imitate his voice for a Doritos corn chip commercial. In the early '90s, he filed several lawsuits against his previous record label, Third Story Music. He alleged, among other things, that Third Story reneged on a contract by allowing two of his songs to used in TV commercials overseas.

Pixies, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr. Set For Lollapalooza

The Pixies, Weezer, Widespread Panic, the Killers, the Arcade Fire, Liz Phair, the Black Keys and Death Cab For Cutie are among the acts that will play the reconfigured Lollapalooza festival, which, as previously reported, will be held July 23-24 in Chicago's Grant Park. Also on the bill are Cake, Dashboard Confessional, Dinosaur Jr., Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Louis XIV, Tegan & Sara, M83, Los Amigos Invisibles, Blue Merle, the Redwalls, the Changes, Dandy Warhols, Digable Planets, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Billy Idol, the Bravery and Blonde Redhead. The lineup was announced today (April 22) in Chicago. Lollapalooza 2005 will be produced by Capital Sports & Entertainment and Charles Attal Presents -- the brain trust behind the successful Austin City Limits festival -- along with Lollapalooza owners the William Morris Agency and Perry Farrell. "This lineup is a cross between ACL and Coachella," Attal tells Billboard.com of the event, which will feature more than 70 acts on five stages. "It's the ACL model that we're bringing to Chicago." That model, Attal says, is a lower-than-expected ticket price, local food vendors, accessible stage layout and set times, as well as an amenity-heavy backstage vibe. "You've got to send a message," Attal says. "You take care of the bands, you take care of the music consumer who's buying the ticket, and they'll come back for more." Earlier this month, 2,000 Internet presale tickets sold out in 80 minutes, according to Capital Sports' Charlie Jones. "Whether or not that was a true indicator of the strength of this brand or the result of press leaks with the bands, we'll never know," Jones says. "But people who took that bet with us will get a fancy souvenir ticket." (via billboard)

Autechre:: Untilted (Album Review)

A significant piece of Autechre's appeal lies in their deliberate obfuscation. At its best, the British duo's music seeps with the sensation that, beneath its already complex, vertiginous surfaces there hide still further multitudes, packed in rusted wire and just out of sight. As with poetry, you need to read between the lines. It's an unusual aural trick, and one of the reasons that the duo seem to have a staying power and cult following that similarly abstruse artists could only dream of. After reaching a critical and popular zenith a full decade ago (!) with Tri Repetae, the band's subsequent music has fractured and refracted itself into a truly avant-garde dance music. On Untilted, their ninth full-length album (at 60 minutes, 1999's Ep7 is one in name only), the duo continue to strip away most vestiges of melody, harmony and tone in favor of severe, desiccated percussion. The results are not for the faint of heart – beats stutter uncomfortably, disappear without warning, and practically scratch out the walls of your speakers from the inside. There is very little else in the mix to hold your attention. Autechre have reinvented the "IDM" wheel at least twice over their career. They don't look to be doing it again on Untilted. Instead, the duo zooms in on their methodically constructed sound world, wringing out further variations and angles on a harshly lit and ominously seductive theme.

British Sea Power:: Open Season (Album Review)

'Open Season' demands perseverance. On my first foray, it felt too light-hearted, too obviously going for a more mainstream audience. I felt it lacked the insane caterwauling of songs on 'The Decline of British Sea Power' such as 'Apologies to Insect Life' and its unhinged barks of "Fyodor you are the most attractive man... HYEAT! HYEAT!"; 'Open Season' felt a little smooth, the spliced-in bird sounds labouring the point somewhat. But perseverance is part of British Sea Power, and their enduring mystique. It's there in the opening 'It Ended on An Oily Stage' and its lyrics plucked from that strange mine of 'Sea Powers very own - they themselves persevere with the "Languages... being lost" in their depiction of life experienced through "the coastalry... regions of the mind." 'Open Season' is a record that matures British Sea Power into what was first suggested by their strident presence when I first saw them play the Bull & Gate back in 2001. 'How Will I Ever Find My Way Home?', sung by Hamilton, hurries a little too fast, as if eager to avoid an approaching rainshow, but this haste merely enhances Sea Power's bassist's unusual vocal timbre. 'Like A Honeycomb' has the tired joy of returning home from some arduous trek. 'Please Stand Up', meanwhile, has an anthemic quality that should see it as yet another British Sea Power blast 'gainst the Jericho of crossover success. Yet it is moulded in the band's unique image through despairing cadence and wistfully drawn out guitar. Everything feels bolder than before, more assured of the rightness of singing from places that most lyricists fear to tred. In textures and words alone, 'Open Season' is a country mile ahead of any of the supposedly heroic guitar debuts knocking around in 2005. You couldn't imagine any other band coming up with 'North Hanging Rock', say, which half-way through, suddenly emerges from some torpid mist, as choral twinges and a simple piano back the floating vocals... "Drape yourself in greenery, become part of the scenery." But it's in the triumvirate of songs that close 'Open Season' that British Sea Power's most redoubtable presence is felt, where the true reason for their importance in our early twenty-first century ears becomes most perceptible. The chiming 'Oh Larsen B' is not only an ode to the sad disintegration of an ice shelf, but representative of British Sea Power's ability to evoke the marginal without losing themselves in a briar of self-constricting eccentricity. It builds through thrumming melody into what is the closest British Sea Power have yet come to capturing the esprit de corps of their audacious live shows, before tipping over into the Hamilton's dreamy 'The Land Beyond'. Then 'True Adventures' rises in a tumult of drums, hums and tumbles in great Nordic light-fizzes, bended strings, distant brass and dense power. Yet at its close, the 'Open Season' has only just begun.

A Gift from Trent Reznor to Mac Users

Hello all- For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results. After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy. What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible. So...You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems. Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen. Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo). There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.

This month, Swami Records is releasing an album of Hot Snakes' Peel Sessions. The disc includes four live tracks recorded October 11th of last year with John Peel, the last session from the Peel before his death of a heartattack at age 65. The Peel Sessions will be released April 26th.

Saw Midtown, The High Strung, The Capital Years, The Ruby Doe, The Forty-Fives, The Dead Vampires and about 12 other bands who were not nearly as good as the bands listed... Jesus.. I am worn out!... Well. I am off to Dallas, TX for a week of BBQ and Mexican Food. So this coming weeks posting is gonna be slim.. So here is a BUNCH of Songs / Albums to hold you over until I get back.. Neil Young Treated for Brain Aneurysm

NEW YORK - Neil Young was treated for a brain aneurysm this week and remains hospitalized, although doctors expect a full recovery, his publicist said Friday. The 59-year-old rocker underwent a procedure to treat it Tuesday night at a New York hospital, where he was expected to remain for a few more days, publicist Bob Merlis told The Associated Press. Dr. Pierre Gobin, who performed the procedure with another doctor, said: "Mr. Young had a dangerous brain aneurysm and was treated successfully by the minimally invasive neuroradiology team here. He is now resting comfortably ... but we strongly recommend that he not travel for several days." Young had been expected to perform Sunday at the Juno Awards — the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. "I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to make it to Winnipeg for the Junos as I had hoped. I grew up there and was really looking forward to the show as well as spending some time with my old friends and family," Young said. "Thanks to my doctors, I'm feeling a lot better now so I hope I can get a rain check." The aneurysm was discovered when Young's vision became blurry after attending the March 14 induction ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Merlis said. An examination by a neurologist detected the aneurysm and the procedure was scheduled. The veteran rocker is expected to resume normal activities soon. But for now, Merlis said, "He's got to take it easy."

Bassist for Guitar Wolf Dies

Barring a Dwarves-like PR prank, the news seems all over various garage boards that Hideaki Sekiguchi, a.k.a. Billy, a.k.a. Bass Wolf of Japan's legendary Guitar Wolf has passed on of a heart attack. He died in Tokyo yesterday and was only 38. In a mountain of garage punk combos hitting the road these days, few have totally risen to the bar set by these guys, whose basic Ramones/MC5-inspired formula became a mere tip of the iceberg of the pure insanity one was sure to experience at each and every show attended. Besides being the live rock equivalent of a screaming monkey being put into a boiling pot, their first album sounded like someone playing through gauze down a hallway, and the "quality" of the production over on ensuing LPs on Matador, Narnack etc. dipped and rose to confound you even more.. Today's news is sad indeed.
