M. Ward:: Transistor Radio (Album Review)

Some of the best artists are the ones that don't come riding a wave of overexposure. So it should come as no surprise that Transfiguration of Vincent (M. Ward's previous album) received very little attention upon its release in 2003. M. Ward's music has an element of yesteryear, and luckily for us, he had to win over fans show by excellent show and by word of mouth. Transistor Radio, M. Ward's latest release, luckily benefits from all of his hard work over the last two years. While not as strong as Transfiguration, the album might just be the ticket Ward needs to find himself where he belongs...at the top of the modern folk rock scene. At 16 tracks, Transistor Radio is a comprehensive workout in M. Ward's finest strengths. "You Still Believe in Me," a simple guitar instrumental reminiscent of his debut album End of Amnesia, opens the album and leads into the relatively new terrain of old-timey sing-alongs with "One Life Away." With backing vocals courtesy of touring pal Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), the duo finds a very common ground, mixing early country guitar work with vocal harmonies that recall the finest songs by the Carter Family. "Sweethearts on Parade," "Fuel for Fire," and "Four Hours in Washington" follow as the album moves along, but are unfortunately weaker versions of previously released songs. "Four Hours in Washington" is simply far too similar to "Sad, Sad Song" from Transfiguration for this listener not to take notice. Thankfully, "Paul's Song" returns to the finer M. Ward moments, with a beautiful acoustic strum hiding underneath Ward's silky voice. Most of Transistor Radio highlights this sort of dichotomy between beautiful, new directions and treading older territory, with mixed results. Indeed, the hit and miss nature of Transistor Radio makes it seem more like a compilation of songs rather than a cohesive album. But in the end, the album is a winner simply due to Ward's unique voice and talent as a songwriter. (reviewer: jean-pierre)

• Sasquatch! festival, held May 28 in George, Washington, sports big names again this year. Pixies, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Joanna Newsom, Arcade Fire, and A.C. Newman are just a few of the groups included in this year's line-up. Last year's festival included The Shins, Black Keys, Built to Spill, and Postal Service.

* The Jayhawks have apparently called it a day. Singer Gary Louris has confirmed that the alternative-country pioneers formed in Minneapolis two decades ago are no longer an active band.

* Paul Westerberg will be the subject of a solo retrospective this spring via Rhino.

* Live performances by DJ Z-Trip, Mix Master Mike, the X-ecutioners and DJ Jazzy Jay are featured on the DVD "Scratch: All the Way Live." Due April 19 via Scratch Recordings, the sets were taped at Los Angeles' House of Blues during the last Scratch tour. Bonus features include commentary by Z-Trip and footage from a Philadelphia jam session with him, the Roots' Scratch, Qbert and the X-ecutioners.

• Black Rebel Motorcycle Club has signed an overseas deal with Echo, which will now distribute the group in Europe and the UK, and is working on a stateside deal. BRMC is currently working on its third studio album, tentatively titled Americana, said to sound markedly different from the band's first two albums for Virgin.

• Bright Eyes, also known as Conor Oberst, is also touring in the coming weeks. As previously reported, world dates will only includes songs from the acoustic album I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, with songs from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn to be featured on this summer's tour. Labelmates Rilo Kiley will join Oberst in Europe; R.E.M. opens in Australia. (via DOA)

“A music writer said we’re like a candy apple with a razor blade inside, which I think is a really great way to put it,” says Joy Zipper’s Tabitha Tindale. Vinny Cafiso, the other half of Joy Zipper (and Tabitha’s other half in real life), admits that he “doesn’t like to give away too much” and says he and Tabitha are indeed “flowering it up a bit to hide the darkness underneath.” There is an exquisite sweetness to the Joy Zipper sound. The tone of American Whip, the duo’s second album (in stores now on Dangerbird Records), is set by “Christmas Song,” which boasts a dreamy chorus – “I love you more than a thousand Christmases/ I want you more than any gift I can think of” – that sticks like Juicy Fruit. The Alpha Centauri keyboard effects, super-groovy organ line and that one Summer Of Love guitar progression give way to ecstatic stacked harmonies recalling The Beach Boys and The Beatles, two of Tabitha and Vince’s favorite antecedents.

WHITE STRIPES PLAN A QUICKIE

THE WHITE STRIPES are set to start recording their new album this week. The duo are planning to head back into the studio to record the follow-up to 2003’s ’Elephant’ in Detroit. ”I’m going home to record in a couple of days,” White said. “And it should be done pretty quick.” It is expected that the band will follow the same process as ’Elephant’ - featuring the singles ’Seven Nation Army’ and ’The Hardest Button To Button’ - which was recorded in ten days. White has also just completed work on a collaborative LP with pal Brendan Benson. Talking about his intensive work schedule, White said: "I've done it [this way] for a long time, in my attic and out of my house, making 45s for bands. When bands would come to town, they'd stay at my house and we'd cut an album. (We'd do the same thing with) local Detroit bands.” He told MTV News: "I've been doing it for as long as I've been writing, and for as long as I've had bands, I've been recording. I never knew too much about the technical side, I just wanted to get things on tape that were soulful. And that's the same thing with (Loretta Lynn’s ’Van Lear Rose’). It was on 8-track, and we did it in 12 days." Lynn is also hoping to work again The White Stripes’s mainman again, saying: “We haven't talked too much lately. He's been working, and I have too. We will try to do some songs together pretty soon. I would like to get with him and write some stuff for my new album." (Via NME)

AllofMP3 Under Attack—Probably Doomed

It was bound to happen—only a question of when. AllofMP3, the Russian download service that sold music by the megabyte in formats and bitrates chosen by the user, has been under investigation by the Russian police. The recommendation at this point is that the service be prosecuted for operating criminally. AllofMP3 has steadfastly maintained that it offers a catalog cleared by some Russian agency, and I have never seen a clear explanation of what that agency is or how much authority it has to clear a global inventory of tracks. Most suspiciously, bands such as The Beatles, which do not authorize online release of their music, were well represented in AllofMP3. But the service is beautiful, providing a degree of customization undreamed of by iTMS and other services, all of which seem like stark rip-offs by comparison. It is still operating as of now.

NICK COMING HOMME AGAIN?

JOSH HOMME and NICK OLIVERI could be back working together as early as this year. The longtime Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss collaborators have been estranged since Homme sacked Oliveri in mysterious circumstances last year. But now, Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen has told Playlouder that fans hoping for a reunion may not have to wait long. “Nick’s going to make another Mondo Generator record and we’ll probably all end up playing on it," said Leeuwen. “It’s that understood. Him and Josh are brothers, you know.” Leeuwen also explained how he himself feared that the Queens Of The Stone Age were over when Oliveri left. “I thought ‘what am I gonna do now?” he explained. “There were a lot of questions. Looking at it now I wouldn’t say that I’m glad he’s gone because he’s a great artist but I would say that it’s okay that we’ve changed and it’s gonna get even better. Things change and you’ve gotta roll with what’s going on.” The band release their album ‘Lullabies To Paralyze’ on March 21, and Leeuwen was quick to explode one particular myth surrounding album track ‘Everybody Knows You’re Insane’. “A lot of people think it’s a reference to Nick, and I can understand why they say that but it’s absolutely not,” he explained. “We know a lot of people and some of their behaviour is insane and it doesn’t have to be violent or whatever. It could be talking about a large number of people. It could be the whole general public of the United States!”

Journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, who unleashed the concept of "gonzo journalism" in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself in the head Sunday at his home near Aspen, Colorado, police and his family said. "On Feb. 20, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head at his fortified compound in Woody Creek, Colo.," said a statement issued by Thompson's son, Juan Thompson, to the Aspen Daily News as reported by the Denver Post. "The family will shortly provide more information about memorial service and media contacts. Hunter prized his privacy, and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family." A dispatcher for the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department confirmed Thompson's death. Thompson, 67, was associated with the "New Journalism" movement of the 1960s, in which writers took a more novelistic and personal approach to their subjects. His account of a drug-fueled trip to cover a district attorneys' anti-drug conference as a writer for Rolling Stone magazine was the seed of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," perhaps his best-known work. Subtitled "A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream," the 1971 book included his lament on the passing of the 1960s and its "sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil." "There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs," he wrote. "We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back." In "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72," he described the campaign leading to Richard Nixon's re-election as president with terms like "brutal" and "depraved," speculating that Democratic Sen. Ed Muskie was under the influence of an obscure African psychoactive drug and bemoaned Nixon's looming victory by proclaiming, "Jesus, where will it end? How low do you have to stoop in this country to become president?" Other works included "The Great Shark Hunt," a collection of Watergate-era essays; "Generation of Swine," his lament on the youth of the 1980s; and his account of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential win, "Better than Sex." His lone novel, "The Rum Diaries," was published in 1998, while a collection of letters, "The Proud Highway: The Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman," came out in 1997. In recent years, he wrote a column for the sports network ESPN's Web site. In his most recent piece, posted Feb. 15, he describes shooting at golf balls like skeet with a friend near his longtime home -- he called it "a fortified compound" -- outside Aspen. "The general reaction here is shock and dismay, because he was such a figure in town," Aspen resident John Hoag told CNN. Still, Hoag said, Thompson remained a private person. "The most news we heard from him was when a pack of dogs killed his peacock, Atillah, and he broke his leg in Hawaii last year." Thompson also was the model for the character of "Uncle Duke" in the "Doonesbury" comic strip. But Thompson strongly disliked the characterization, once telling an interviewer that he would set "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau on fire if the two ever met. In later years, however, Thompson said he had made peace with the "Uncle Duke" portrayal. "I got used to it a long time ago," he told Freezerbox magazine in 2003. "I used to be a little perturbed by it. It was a lot more personal ... It no longer bothers me." In 1980, actor Bill Murray portrayed Thompson in the film "Where the Buffalo Roam." And in 1998, the film "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" was released, based on Thompson's book and starring Johnny Depp as the journalist. A new film reportedly is in production based on Thompson's novel "The Rum Diaries." The writer himself, Hoag said, will be missed. "There's no one in the world these days who writes the truth ... as he seems to, to me," he said. "He spoke to the world and said what people were afraid to say."

The Ravonettes get Pretty in Black

The Raveonettes will release their second full-length album, Pretty in Black, on May 3rd. Co-produced by singer, guitarist and songwriter Sune Rose Wagner and pop legend Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, the Go-Go's), Pretty features more ambience and less distortion than its predecessor, Chain Gang of Love. "That reverb was so big and nice, I forgot about the distortion," Wagner told Rolling Stone during the album's recording sessions in November. "I thought, 'I have to add some later.' But once we got into the studio, we just used a lot of the guitar sounds that I got at Richard's house, because they sounded so good." Joining Wagner and vocalist Sharin Foo on the set is bassist and new member Anders Christensen. Ronnie Spector, Suicide's Martin Rev and former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker make guest appearances.
The first single, "Love in a Trashcan," is due to radio in mid-March, while the band will launch a U.S. tour in support of the release on April 26th in New York.

New Death Cab EP on Barsuk.

Death Cab For Cutie will offer its final release on longtime indie home Barsuk Records next month, in the form of the seven-track live set "The John Byrd EP." The collection was recorded during the band's 2004 spring tour and will be available beginning March 1 only at select independent retail locations. Fans who order via Barsuk's Web site will receive a limited edition T-shirt. The EP includes "We Laugh Indoors," "We Looked Like Giants," "405," "Why You'd Want To Live Here," "Lightness," "Photobooth" and "Blacking Out the Friction," the latter of which is appended with a cover of Sebadoh's "Brand New Love," itself previously covered by Superchunk. Death Cab is in the midst of recording its debut album for Atlantic Records, which is expected by the end of the year or early 2006. (Via Billboard)

Most frighteningly, a swarm of the Locust will be decimating America with their flailing, writhing spazz-grind as part of the Ipecac Geek Show tour—headlined by Patton-led weird merchants Fantômas (supporting their Carl Stalling-core typhoon Suspended Animation) and jazzbo zornographers Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant. But don’t go painting lamb’s blood on your door if you live in Detroit, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Minneapolis or San Francisco… because they ain’t stoppin’ by! The Locust are giving four sweaty, gloved middle fingers to all of the Clear Channel venues booked for the tour; boycotting the monolithopoly for its destruction of free thought and its general suckiness. Loretta Lynn Wins First Grammy in 33 Years

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran country singer Loretta Lynn, who launched a bold comeback last year by joining forces with Detroit rocker Jack White of the White Stripes, won her first Grammy Award in 33 years on Sunday. Lynn, 69, who received five nominations in four categories, won the country collaboration with vocals prize for her performance with White on "Portland Oregon." She lost the female country vocal performance race to best new artist nominee Gretchen Wilson, and the best country song race -- where she was nominated twice -- to Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman, the writers of the Tim McGraw hit "Live Like You Were Dying." Lynn's album, "Van Lear Rose," was also nominated for best country album, the winner of which will be announced during the televised ceremony later in the day. Lynn's sole Grammy to date was for "After the Fire is Gone," her duet with the late Conway Twitty, which they won in 1972. "Van Lear Rose," the 71st album of her 45-year career, earned wide critical acclaim and attention from a new generation of fans, thanks to the unlikely involvement of White, who coaxed her out of semi-retirement. The cherubic-faced frontman with the hallowed indie duo the White Stripes was a longtime fan and journeyed to Nashville in 2003, where they ended up recording most of the album in two days. In addition to producing and arranging the album, he sang with Lynn on the atmospheric single "Portland Oregon," which won unexpected airplay on rock radio stations. Lynn's chart-topping autobiographical 1970 tune "Coal Miner's Daughter" inspired both a best-selling memoir and an Oscar-winning film starring Sissy Spacek. Mentored by the late Patsy Cline, she carved out a career as a feminist heroine. Her other No. 1 country hits included "Don't Come Home Drinkin' (with Lovin' On Your Mind)," "Fist City" and "Woman of the World."

Icarus Line guitarist quits, joins Nine Inch Nails

Aaron North of The Icarus Line has left the band and joined Nine Inch Nails. He will be making his live debut performing on the industrial band's upcoming March tour of the UK. North has stated that the new position was not the motivation for his departure from his former band, said that: I quit the band. I was over it. I did not quit the Icarus line to join Nine Inch Nails,I quit the Icarus line about a month before I started playing with NIN. The Icarus Line released their previous record, and V2 debut, Penance Soirée last year. Nine Inch Nails will be releasing With Teeth on May 3rd via Interscope.

Matt Sweeney and Will Oldham:: Superwolf (Album Review)

“Ah, Superwolf. Nuts and Gum together at last,” muttered my keen co-worker upon examination of the new Will Oldham album. On paper, admittedly, he had a point. This meeting of singer Will Oldham, the Kentucky bard of bleak, and Matt Sweeney, late of primal fuzzbusters Chavez and the well known Billy Corgan ego-stroke Zwan, seems like an almost laughable idea. Excusing the David Pajo connection, it could be a bet one of the two lost to Drag City chief Koretzky, or something realized in a 10-minute sense blur brought on by copious consumption of salvia divinorum. Obviously, the two are no strangers to the art of the collaboration, and on Superwolf, it sounds like Sweeney is giving Oldham a little more rope to tie the S.S. Palace to his rock of ages. Armchair indie-yutzes can be quick to cast Oldham away to the island of alt-country, and while such actions are not without reason, they're surely lazy. If anything, Will Oldham is Will Oldham, no matter how many pseudonyms you give him, and in what is turning into a long career of confounding fans and critics with the “is he sincere or not” card, Superwolf contains some of his most startling work yet. Startling, for even if he is singing about a mythical creature or about having a home in the sea, or spanking a gal across his knee, his sincerity here cannot be questioned, and this could very well be thanks to Sweeney. Here, Sweeney's largely guitar-based compositions either tumble around in the style of Crazy Horse, or unravel gently around Oldham’s croon. Given his track record, it would have been safe to assume that Sweeney would be leaning on the volume knobs and pushing for more frantic rhythms. Here, though, he defies expectations with a subdued approach. There's hardly a hint of Nashville to be found; Superwolf is more along the lines of a Blood On the Tracks or even Lee Hazlewood at his most stark and dreary. Indeed, one may marvel at the unsteady desperation in the words that’s held together by a well-tempered sense of grace. It’s inviting, but once at home, the air becomes thick with pain, isolation and rejection, leaving the listener to wonder whether to nod along or be completely still. It’s a tension that so many try but fail to acheive, but here Oldham and Sweeney have made it seem so effortless that one has to wonder if Oldham had this in mind since his Kentucky days; that he would someday become “The Voice” that so many talk about, no matter how many masks he applies. Maybe he was just looking for the right counterpart all this time. (By Stephen Sowley- Dusted)

TRAIN NOT IN VAIN!

JOE STRUMMER is to have the most unlikely of tributes to him – a locomotive named in his honour. The train, simply named Joe Strummer, will be unveiled on February 12 at Bristol Temple Meads station in recognition of the late Clash singer. Strummer died in December 2002, aged 50. The locomotive is a Class 47 diesel, a designed in 1962 and after being named, will work in East Anglia. (Via NME)

Benson Spreading 'Love' On Tour

Singer/songwriter Brendan Benson has begun lining up tour dates ahead of the March 22 release of his upcoming V2 album, "The Alternative To Love." So far, six shows are lined up in North America, beginning April 7 in Cleveland. Benson will be backed by keyboardist/guitarist Dean Fertita (Waxwings), drummer Matt Alijan and bassist Michael Borrigan. The Stands will support. Beforehand, Benson and company will play six U.K. dates, kicking off March 21 in Edinburgh, with support from Psychid and the Five O'Clock Heroes. As previously reported, "The Alternative To Love" was recorded in Benson's Detroit home studio and mixed by Tchad Blake (Pearl Jam, Neil Finn). "I also like to paint, and in painting it's very obvious to me when to stop," he said in December. "But in music I don't know when to stop. I can't resist that compulsion. In the end it might be the kitchen sink in that song, but I think it's still going to have life just because I had so much fun doing it." Benson has two other projects on the horizon: in addition to a collaborative album with the White Stripes' Jack White, Greenhornes bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler, he is working on a project with Fertita dubbed the Stiff Tissues. Beck Seeing Triple On 'Guero'

In the wake of an unfinished copy of his new album leaking onto the Internet last month, Beck will offer fans a bounty of reasons to purchase the real deal. Due March 29 via Interscope, "Guero" will be released as a standard CD, a double-disc package with two videos and a 5.1 audio mix and a third edition featuring four remixes. Videos for "E-Pro" and "Black Tambourine" will be included on the double-disc set, while Boards Of Canada, Octet, Dizzee Rascal and, as first reported here, Royksopp, contribute the remixes on the third package. On Tuesday (Feb. 1), Beck quietly unveiled the "Hell Yes" EP on Apple's iTunes Music Store, featuring remixes of the title track and "Que Onda Guero" by 8-bit and remixes of "E-Pro" and "Girl" by Paza. A video for "Hell Yes" directed by Mumbleboy is also available on iTunes. Beck has yet to confirm tour dates in support of "Guero," but he played his second surprise show in recent weeks last Friday at Echo in Los Angeles, which featured a number of tracks from the new album.

Four Tet, Matmos Turn Sabbath Inside-Out

Four Tet, Matmos, Paul Newman, Ruins and Racebannon are among the acts contributing tracks to "Everything Comes & Goes: A Tribute to Black Sabbath." Due April 5 via Temporary Residence, the set has been in the works for more than eight years, during which time Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne has become even more of a household name thanks to his MTV reality show and annual Ozzfest tour. In fact, the album took so long to complete that one contributing act, the Curtis Harvey Trio, has since broken up, leaving its cover of "Changes" as its only recorded output. Japanese noise-rock outfit the Ruins' selection, "Reversible Sabbath," wasn't even solicited; when the band heard the album was in progress, it simply submitted a DAT to Temporary Residence with the handwritten message, "We hope Sabbath fan will not angry with this song." In fact, "Reversible Sabbath" is the skewed highlight of an already unusual collection, as it finds the Ruins running through a few bars of about eight different Sabbath songs, and then playing them again in reverse order. "If the first half was written out as sheet music, you would flip the sheet music upside down and play it that way for the last half," Temporary Residence's Jeremy DeVine said. "The notes are inverted, and the songs are played perfectly backward, like a mirror. It's totally mental." Four Tet's Kieran Hebden blends acoustic strumming with treated beats on his cover of "Iron Man," while electronica duo Matmos renders "F/X" into a barely audible jumble of electronic chirping. In its instrumental version, Grails emphasize both the sludge and power of the monolithic "Black Sabbath," while Paul Newman proves a perfect choice at interpreting the dynamically variant "Fairies Wear Boots," which Sabbath frequently turned into a 20-minute jam in live performances. One act unable to capitalize on the project's eight-year turnaround was Jason Molina's Songs: Ohia project. In 1997, Molina submitted a cover of "Solitude" as well as a truncated version of "Snowblind" recorded on a four-track, but never had time to re-record the songs with a full band to his satisfaction.

Coachella lineup announced

COLDPLAY, NINE INCH NAILS, NEW ORDER and WEEZER are set to top the bill at the sixth Californian COACHELLA FESTIVAL. A host of British acts including Razorlight , Kasabian, The Futureheads, Bloc Party, Keane, Snow Patrol, The Chemical Brothers, Doves, Prodigy, Katie Melua, Roots Manuva, British Sea Power and Stereophonics will also play over the two-day event, which runs over the weekend of April 30-May 1. The festival will again take place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, a desert hot spot two hours outside of LA. After festival bosses brought a reunited Stooges to the line up in 2003 and helped get the Pixies back together for their 2004 show, Coachella 2005 will follow the tradition of bringing back reformed groups by hosting Bauhaus and Cocteau Twins in this year’s line-up.
