New Albums, Reissues On Pollard's Post-GBV Plate

Guided By Voices called it a career with a two-show blowout late last month in Chicago, but frontman Robert Pollard is quickly moving forward. Beyond his usual cavalcade of projects, We learned Pollard is even in negotiations to be involved in a hush-hush soundtrack for a soft-porn film to be lensed by a major Hollywood director. To kick-start his solo career, Pollard assembled recordings of his best-known alcohol-fueled stage rants and recently released them under the name "Relaxation of the A**hole" in a limited run of 500 vinyl copies via his Rockathon imprint. Next up will be a Pollard solo single, "Zoom," which will arrive on 7-inch vinyl and CD single via Fading Captain on Feb. 28 for online orders and April 11 via traditional retail outlets. A March 29 online/April 11 retail release is also penciled in for a colored vinyl LP version of GBV's 1986 album "Forever Since Breakfast," which will be limited to 1,000 copies. May 9 will bring a six-song EP from Moping Swans, which features Pollard teamed with former GBV bassist Greg Demos and drummer Jim MacPherson, plus guitarist Tony Conley, from Pollard's pre-GBV metal outfit Anacrusis. Pollard describes the music here as "jagged" and more "post-punk"-oriented than GBV's recent output. On the same day, Fading Captain will issue the fourth album (titled "Five") from Pollard's Circus Devils project with GBV producer Todd Tobias. A vinyl reissue of GBV's 1992 album "Propeller" will come out in early summer via Scat Records. The set will be adorned with the handmade cover design from the first numbered copy of the original album. A tentative early summer release is also in the cards for the CD debut of the Hazzard Hot Rods' "Big Trouble," now titled "Bigger Trouble" thanks to the inclusion of seven bonus tracks. The set was previously released on vinyl in 2000 and chronicles an early '90s set by Pollard and one-time GBV members Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell and Larry Keller recorded in the back of a video store. In the fall, Pollard will unleash a 26-track, double-disc solo album, "From a Compound Eye," on a label to be announced. "It's got all four P's: pop, punk, prog and psychedelic," the artist says of the collection. Around the same time, former GBV bassist/Spin editor James Greer will publish the authorized GBV book "Hunting Accidents: A Brief History of Guided By Voices" via Grove/Atlantic, while Pollard will release the second volume of his literary magazine, Eat. Digging further back into his sizeable archives, Pollard has assembled "As Forever," a second collection of pre-GBV recordings under the Acid Ranch moniker. This album will be released in the fall by Rockathon in a limited vinyl run of 300 copies with handmade sleeves. If all goes to plan, the year will be crowned in December with the release of the "Suitcase II" boxed set, assembling previously unreleased recordings from the Pollard treasure trove. Issued in 2000, the first volume included 100 unheard songs spanning Pollard's lifetime. And while no live performances are in the cards until the fall, Pollard is expected to be on hand for the annual Guided By Voices "hoot" tribute on March 17 at Emo's in Austin, Texas, as part of the South by Southwest Festival. Prefuse Plans Tour, Tickles Ivories

Prefuse 73 leader Scott Herren is preparing to spend the spring and summer on the road in support of his upcoming album, "Surrounded by Silence," due March 22 via Warp. Herren said the trek, which will feature labelmate Beans and rock act Battles, will begin in late March in Japan and then move into Europe. North American dates are expected to get underway in May. As for who will actually be on stage with Herren on a given night, the artist admits, "it's reformulating itself on its own. Different people are coming in and out. What the final configuration will be, I'm not really sure yet. Everybody I tour with is usually in another band." Another challenge will be reproducing the highly collaborative tracks from "Surrounded by Silence," which features such guests as El-P and the Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah on the single "Hideyaface" and fellow Wu members Masta Killa and GZA on "Just the Thought." "We'll probably do a really, really loud instrumental version of those, I guess," Herren speculates. "We'll take the instrumentals as far as they can go for the tracks that don't have people on top. But how will we do the beats without people on top, and make it transcend and be recognizable? I hope it's not like, 'where the f*** are all these people?' Sorry, I can't bring 20-some people on tour!" Herren is also sitting on the debut album from his Piano Overlord project, which he expects will be released sometime this summer by Chocolate Industries. As the name implies, the album is an instrumental affair dominated by Herren on piano and features drumming by Tortoise/The Sea & Cake mastermind John McEntire. "It's about the subject of island immigrants and laws imposed by the United States upon them," Herren says. "It reflects the plight of somebody that was from a worse-off state and comes here to the United States to find just as much bullsh*t to deal with, not to mention having it launched upon you by the Bush administration." Far from the dreaded rock opera, Herren says the project is "the first time I've ever really, really, really painted a picture where it's like, leaving a certain place, going across the water, finding things here and going through stages. The pianos sound like all different kinds of instruments."
Here is the track list for "Surrounded by Silence":
"I've Said All I Need To Say About Them (Intro)"
"Hideyaface" featuring Ghostface and El-P
"Bad Memory Interlude One"
"TV Versus Detchibe" featuring Tyondai Braxton
"Expressing Views Is Obviously Illegal"
"Pastel Assassins" featuring Claudio and Alejandra Deheza
"Pagina Dos" featuring the Books
"Silencio Interlude"
"Now You're Leaving" featuring Camu
"Gratis" (Pedro vs. Prefuse)
"We Go Our Own Way" featuring Kazu (Blonde Redhead)
"Mantra Two" featuring Tyondai Braxton
"Sabbatical With Options" featuring Aesop Rock
"It's Crowded" featuring Claudio Deheza
"Just the Thought" featuring Masta Killa and GZA
"La Correccion Exchange" featuring DJ Nobody
"Hideyaface Reprise (Shaolin Finale)" (Reminder + Prefuse Notate Small Ensemble Version)
"Morale Crusher" featuring Beans
"Minutes Away Without You"
"Rain Edit Interlude"
"And I'm Gone" featuring Prefuse vs. Piano Overlord vs. Broadcast vs. Cafe Tacuba

Lou Barlow:: EMOH (Album Review)

The quality of Lou Barlow's songwriting hasn't dipped much over the years, but throughout his recent trip from Sebadoh to The Folk Implosion to The New Folk Implosion, Barlow's passion seems to have fallen off. In his lo-fi days, he invested warped experiments and haunting ballads with an equal amount of heart, but over his last couple of albums, even the best songs sound oddly flat. Barlow's first real solo album, EMOH, shuffles just about all the styles that the alt-rock veteran has tried throughout his career, from chamber pop to murky grunge to hissy acoustic laments, and it features guest appearances from Sebadoh and Folk Implosion colleagues Jason Loewenstein, Russ Pollard, and Imaad Wasif. The album feels like a summation. It also feels as naggingly undercooked as most of Barlow's work this decade. Of course, Barlow's such a skilled tunesmith that EMOH is listenable anyway, especially early on. The gently peppy album-opener "Holding Back The Year" makes quiet yearning sound adventurous, and the track that follows, "HOME," spreads an intensely morose electronic hum across one of Barlow's typical fits of sympathetic navel-gazing. But by track three, the Folk Implosion-styled tick-tock pop move "Caterpillar Girl," longtime Barlow fans may rightly wonder if he has anything new to offer, or if he's going to keep returning to modes and moods that he's long since mastered. Even the album's later high points—the toe-tapping, hopeful "If I Could," the glib "Mary," and especially the rich, slowly spiraling "Confused"—sound a little too cautious. Again, it's not like EMOH is a bad record by any stretch of the imagination. For listeners unfamiliar with Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, EMOH might actually make a good entry point into Barlow's varied discography, since it relies on all his gifts. But coming from a man who pioneered warts-and-all home recording, and who often gets cited as a progenitor of emo's soul-baring DIY ethic—a dual legacy that the album's title mocks and embraces—this set of songs disappoints with its unwillingness to take real chances. Seemingly afraid to sound foolish, Barlow now sounds just okay. —Noel Murray- Onion

Buzzcocks To Share 'Philosophy'

Iconic U.K. punk quartet Buzzcocks will follow up its self-titled 2003 comeback album with an all-new studio disc this year. Due in late summer or early autumn through Merge, the album, which is still a work in progress, is tentatively titled "Flat Pack Philosophy." 2005 looks to be a busy year for the band, with a series of live dates confirmed for the U.K. between March and May. Notable among them is a "Spirit of '77" show in Manchester with the Slits' Ari Up and 999 on March 11. Another show dubbed "Academy in the U.K." is slated for May 1 in Birmingham and will also feature the Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers. A Merge spokesperson says plans are tentative for North American tour dates to coincide with the forthcoming album's Stateside release.

The band will soon be back in the studio to record their first full length album for Matador Records, with a tentative release date for Autumn 2005.

Sirius and XM radio to merge?

Satellite radio rivals Sirius and XM have been cozying up to each other, The NY Post has learned. While talks have not advanced far, executives from both sides have been meeting lately to discuss the possibility of a merger, according to several sources close to the matter. Sources say the executives have not yet discussed price. They have, however, been weighing any potential antitrust concerns that would arise from a deal, which would create a monopoly in the nascent satellite radio business. The two companies have talked in the past about merging, but the discussions never got to an advanced stage. But in the wake of Sirius' hiring of former Viacom President Mel Karmazin in November, the issue has gained renewed urgency, sources said. "Mel is a roll-up guy, a deal guy," said one source close to Karmazin. While many people in the media industry say it's inevitable the two companies will eventually merge, sources say a deal could be at least a year away. A spokesman for Sirius said, "as a company we do not comment on rumor or speculation." An XM spokesman did not return a call seeking comment. The satellite radio industry is currently a Federal Communications Commission-licensed duopoly, and both XM and Sirius are hoping they can convince the FCC to redefine the market to include all content over wireless broadband services. As mobile technology in the United States advances, XM and Sirius are hoping the FCC will consider satellite radio as part of the broader industry of delivering music and other content through mobile devices, such as cellphones, say sources. A merger between XM and Sirius — neither of which is yet profitable — would alleviate a price war for premium content and allow the two companies to save significant amounts of money on marketing costs. Merrill Lynch analyst Laraine Mancini said in a conference call earlier this week that one of the chief risks of investing in the companies' stock is a potential price war and "irrational bidding" for content. Last year, Sirius announced a blockbuster $500 million deal to bring Howard Stern from traditional radio to satellite radio beginning in 2006. While some hailed the deal as a milestone for the fledgling sat radio industry, some on Wall Street said the company overpaid.

Oasis bidding war

Oasis are reported to be the subject of a bidding war. The Manchester band's current record contract with Sony expires in the summer leaving them free to sign with a new record company. According to The Sun, both EMI and V2 are believed to be offering three-album deals worth £15 million but Sony are also likely to attempt to re-sign the group. A source told the tabloid: "Various record labels have been waiting patiently for the contract to end. Now it's a question of who puts the most money down on the table." "Everybody wants Liam and Noel. They are still an act who can sell millions of records." In a recent interview about Oasis' forthcoming studio album Noel Gallagher implied that they might be looking to leave Sony. He said: "We've written 66 songs between the four of us… but we didn't want to give that much to Sony as its our last album with them, so fuck 'em." Liam Gallagher said of the album: "It sounds good... we just need to get it mastered and then put it in the cover and away we go." The album, rumoured to be titled "Don't Believe The Truth", is tipped for released on May 16.

Apple iTunes sells 250 million songs

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - With its music downloads selling at a rate of more than a million per day, Apple Computer Inc. said Monday customers have purchased more than 250 million songs from its online iTunes Music Store. The store, now available in 15 countries, is selling 1.25 million songs at 99 cents US apiece per day, the computer and multimedia company said. Apple helped invigorate the market for legal music downloads when it launched the iTunes store in April 2003. Its robust sales far outpace rival services. The success is due in part to Apple's wildly popular IPod portable music players, which do not play songs purchased from competing online music stores. The Cupertino-based company sold 4.5 million IPods in the fourth quarter and more than 10 million since its debut in October 2001. Shares of Apple rose 65 cents to $71.14 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $21.70 to $74.42.

ROCK SUPERGROUP COMES TOGETHER FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS

FOO FIGHTERS’ DAVE GROHL and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE’s JOSH HOMME were amongst the stars who joined a supergroup with TENACIOUS D last night (January 17) at a benefit show for the victims of the Asian tsunami. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Beck also swelled the superstar line-up for the grand finale of the gig at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre. Comedian Will Ferrell introduced the show, which culminated in the super-group – Monster Jam – tearing through a medley of The Chamber Brothers, The Byrds and Led Zeppelin songs. The show also featured solo sets from Homme, Grohl, Beck, and Vedder, an appearance from Chris Rock as well as a full length Tenacious D performance. The show was organised by the new collective Music For Relief with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross.

BECK ALBUM TRACKS APPEAR ONLINE

Tracks from the much-delayed new BECK album have leaked onto the Internet. The follow-up to 2002's 'Sea Change' was originally due for release in October, but has been put back, with sometime March 21 or 28now being mooted as the release date. But 13 tracks have turned up online. Track titles include 'Guero', 'Go It Alone', 'E-Pro', 'Brazilica' and 'Summer Girl'. The new tracks, produced by The Dust Brothers, revert back the 'classic' Beck sound of 'Mellow Gold' and 'Odelay' after the largely acoustic 'Sea Change'. The star's label has yet to comment on whether the leak will cause the release to come forward. Last year the release of labelmate Eminem's 'Encore' LP was brought forward amid similar circumstances.

MYSTIC WARRIORS!

THE FLAMING LIPS have titled their new album 'AT WAR WITH THE MYSTICS'. And frontman Wayne Coyne has revealed that he wants Cat Power to guest on the follow-up to 2002's 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots'. The star told Entertainment Weekly: When in doubt, start with a title. 'At War With the Mystics'. If you think it's cool, it sounds good to me!'' Coyne said of the potential collaboration: ''Cat Power seems like she's willing to do a big range of things, and I'm always looking for some mystery element that lets us explore new territory.'' He added: ''We've been using more computers and gadgets, but trying to make them sound more organic and less electronic." But whatever the record sounds like, Coyne is confident that things will go well - as long as the band stick to their guns. ''You're always gaining and losing your audience, so you gotta do what you love,'' said Coyne. ''And if The Flaming Lips can't do what they want, who can, you know?''

Styrofoam:: Nothing's Lost (Album Review)

On Nothing's Lost, Arne Van Petegem creates near-perfect electronic pop and somehow makes doing so sound easy. Unlike the overly dour I'm What's There To Show That Something's Missing, Van Petegem's new album adds some invigorating uplift to Styrofoam's signature melancholia. Perhaps his impressive array of contributors has something to do with it as Van Petegem appears solo on only three songs and generously shares the spotlight elsewhere. The downtempo opener "Misguided," for example, is sweetened by Lali Puna's Valerie Trebeljahr while Brendon Whitney's (aka Alias) rap sounds anything but incongruous, and in fact kicks the tune to a higher level. Van Petegem's talent for vocal counterpoint is showcased to marvelous effect on the anthemic, nine-minute closer "Make It Mine" as well as on "Couches In Alleys" and "Front To Back." The former poignantly showcases Ben Gibbard's (Death Cab For Cutie/The Postal Service) wistful singing and heavenly harmonies, while Andrew Kenny's (American Analog Set) delectable falsetto glides over the silky surfaces of the latter. Nothing's Lost is heavier, denser and in its best moments, verges on pop nirvana. (Ron Schepper)

Doors Manager, Biographer Sugerman Dies in L.A.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Doors manager Danny Sugerman, who befriended the members of the legendary Los Angeles rock band as a youngster and spent the rest of his life tending to its legacy, has died after a battle with lung cancer, associates said on Thursday. He was 50. Sugerman, who died at his home on Wednesday, was responsible for reigniting interest in the band with the best-selling 1980 Doors memoir "No One Here Gets Out Alive," which he co-wrote with veteran music journalist Jerry Hopkins. He also served as a technical advisor on Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "The Doors," which starred Val Kilmer as the group's magnetic late frontman, Jim Morrison. "Danny was the No. 1 Doors fan of the world," Doors drummer John Densmore said. "I told him no one loved Jim as much as he did." Indeed, Sugerman stated in his Doors book, "My personal belief is that Jim Morrison was a god." The Doors, famed for such tunes as "Light My Fire" and "Riders on the Storm," enjoyed a wild heyday in the late 1960s. Sugerman went along for the ride, hooking up with the band when he was 14 after seeing them play a show. He answered fan mail, compiled a scrapbook, and then Morrison suggested putting him on the payroll as a management associate. He went on to manage the affairs of Densmore, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger after Morrison died of heart failure in 1971.Densmore, who visited Sugerman shortly before he died, said he had been sick for some years. "Cigarettes took him out," he added. Sugerman is survived by his wife, Fawn. By the way Fawn is fawn hall of the famous oliver north iran contra scandal...

Last Audio Tape Factory in the US closes

We have very sad news about the closure of the Quantegy (formerly Ampex) tape factory in Alabama. The story of Quantegy/Ampex is amazing - The company started during the war, when the army was using captured German audio tapes to record propaganda speeches. One such tape didn't properly erase, so Eisenhower's speech was mixed with an old recording of Hitler, causing 'fear and confusion among the German people'. The President banned the use of any more German tape, and Major John Herbert Orr had to set up a US tape manufacturing plant in two weeks. That factory was in Alabama, and it closed this week after Quantegy filed for bankrupcy. And they seem to have been the only company in the world making open-reel tape. US Recording Media, who sell the stuff, say: "we're convinced there will be analog tape manufactured once again and we don't feel it's dead". (Via Music Thing)

'SMiLE' Cellist Missing In Tsunami's Wake
Brian Wilson has issued a desperate plea for any information on the whereabouts of Markus Sandlund, a cellist from the Stockholm Strings & Horns who played on his recently released recreation of the lost Beach Boys album "SMiLE." Sandlund was vacationing in Thailand when the area was battered by a tsunami following a Dec. 26 earthquake in the Indian Ocean and has not been heard from since. "I have been devastated since I heard the news that Markus is missing in Thailand," Wilson says in a statement. "We have sent an agent to see what we can find out, but as of today (Jan. 4) we have been unable to locate Marcus in the area. If there is anyone out there who might know Markus' whereabouts please contact info@brianwilson.com. "My prayers go out to all of the victims and their families and I would ask you to say a prayer for Markus' safe return," he adds. Sandlund and his girlfriend, identified only as Sofi, embarked on the vacation at the end of the Wilson's New Zealand and Australian tour in support of "SMiLE" (Nonesuch). They were in the pool at the Orchid Beach Resort at Khao Lak when the tsunami struck. Sofi was swept away and later rescued, and is now recovering in a Swedish hospital. According to the Web site of trombonist Bjorn Samuelson, a member of the Stockholm Strings & Horns, the 29-year-old Sandlund has played cello since he was 6 years old and studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Besides Wilson, he has also performed in Sweden behind the late Ray Charles.

Super Furry Animals Prep Hits Set
It's set to be a Super Furry world in 2005, as idiosyncratic Welsh pop mavens Super Furry Animals have three album projects in the works. The band is working on its seventh full-length and front man Gruff Rhys' first solo effort is due March 8, but XL Recordings/Beggars Group has a career spanning compilation due before either of those projects comes to light Set for a Jan. 25 U.S. release, "Songbook: The Singles Volume One" is the first Super Furry singles collection. The set covers a lot of ground, from fan favorite "Blerwytirhwng" -- off the group's improbably titled 1995 debut EP "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwllantysilio-gogogochynygofod
(In Space)" -- to "Slow Life" and "Golden Retriever," from SFA's 2003 album "Phantom Power." Other choice selections among the album's 21 tracks include "Northern Lites," "Something for the Weekend," "Hermann Loves Pauline," "Play It Cool," "If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You" and "The International Language of Screaming." The set includes cuts from each of the band's full-lengths as well as lauded non-album singles "The Man Don't Give a F***" and "Ice Hockey Hair." A companion "Songbook" DVD will feature all of the band's videos and a 40-minute documentary featuring footage of the band on tour in the United States.
