The Pixies’ Joey Santiago Scores Weeds

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This apparently isn’t the case for Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago, who’s been taking time between tourdates to write the score for the new Showtime original comedy series Weeds. Premiering on August 10, the show stars Mary-Louise Parker, Elizabeth Perkins, and Kevin Nealon and chronicles a “typical” suburban California family. And by “typical” we mean Parker’s recently-widowed character begins dealing pot to put food on the table. “This is a lot of fun and something I can continue to do when I’ll embarrass my kids by being on stage,” said Santiago, who’s apparently taken quite a fancy to composing music atypical to the Pixies’ style. “Scoring a TV series is a lot different than playing in a band, the pace and deadlines are completely different, but once you get into the groove, it’s really great.” This project will add to his growing list of scores which include those for the Fox TV series Undeclared and the film Crime in Suburbia. He also recently wrote the theme for Cartoon Network’s Sunday Pants — now you have even more excuses to prolong your to transition to adult television. As a side note, Santiago and the rest of the Pixies will be performing their first-ever live acoustic set at next month’s Newport Folk Festival. The band is also preparing to begin recording their first album in nearly fourteen years.
