Bob Mould and Paul Westerberg play benefit

Bob Mould and Paul Westerberg will be taking part in a benefit concert for Soul Asylum bassist Karl Mueller, who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. In a recent interview, Westerberg admitted to trying to get the Replacements back together for the show: "One of our old roadie pals came over who owns a bar now and runs a club and was asking if I would do a benefit for Karl and I said, 'See if the boys want to play.' And he kind of went around and got various answers and it didn't come back real strong like, 'Hey let's do it.' And I felt like that was the opportunity, that was the chance and we just missed it. Now I say there's probably no chance we'll get back together again." The concert is October 21 at Quest in Minneapolis, and will also feature members of Soul Asylum and Golden Smog, the group made up of members of Wilco and the Jayhawks.

Kingblind is so happy to have these two amazing bands playing together. This will be the CD Release party for the new Japancakes record For complete up to the second info CLICK HERE

About Japancakes:
This Athens, Georgia group defies standard musical categories. The songs often build from a single chord to which the band adds complex layers of cello, pedal steel guitar, old 70s keyboards, found sounds, and waves of lush guitars. This music manages to be great mood music that also merits close attention, revealing all kinds of hidden gems in the many layers of sounds. This is complex, beautiful, and innovative music.

About National Grain:

Pulling from influences such as Uncle Tupelo, George Jones and The Replacements. National Grain's music is something akin to country, rock and honky-tonk strained through and old AM radio. The music is conceived, written, practiced, performed and should be enjoyed while surrounded by cigarette smoke and beer.

RIYL: Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Stereolab, Flaming Lips, Hank Williams, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Calexico, Uncle Tupelo.

Waits Plans Single U.S. Show

Following a brief European tour, Tom Waits has scheduled a lone U.S. concert date this year. The Oct. 18 show at Seattle's Paramount Theater will be one of only two North American shows the artist has planned in 2004, the other coming Oct. 15 in Vancouver. Because Waits has rarely toured in recent years, word of his performances has been met with overwhelming response from fans. The Vancouver show sold out in just nine minutes, according to a representative for the artist, while requests for tickets greatly outpaced availability for European theater stops in London, Antwerp and Berlin. Tickets for a Nov. 19-21 stand in Amsterdam will to on sale Saturday (Oct. 2). Along with Waits' new Anti- studio album, "Real Gone," tickets for the Seattle show will go on sale as the clock strikes midnight on Oct. 5 at the city's two Tower Records locations. Remaining tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. that day via Ticketmaster and the 2,800-capacity venue's box office. Waits, who will make a rare television appearance tomorrow (Sept. 28) on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman," will be backed on the road by bassist Larry Taylor, guitarist Marc Ribot and percussionist Brain. All three appear on "Real Gone," Waits' 20th album and fourth for Epitaph Records imprint Anti-. As previously reported, the album was recorded in an old Mississippi schoolhouse and boasts appearances by Primus founder Les Claypool, Shotgun Messiah's Harry Cody (guitar, banjo), as well as Waits' son, Casey. It was written and produced by Waits and his wife/longtime collaborator Kathleen Brennan. A larger U.S. tour in support of the set is possible in 2005, although nothing is yet confirmed. Waits last toured the country in 1999 in support of his Anti- debut, "Mule Variations."

Brian Wilson on TV

Heck, It's a good week for music on the old telly. Mr. Brian Wilson, whom just released the long awaited SMILE record on Tuesday will be performing a track from SMILE on The Tonight show with Jay Leno. So cool!

Flaming Lips Go 'Mystic' On New Album

"We've moved away from robot sounds to sounds that are made by robots that come off organic." Currently hard at work recording the follow up to 2003's "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", Flaming Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne has been typically atypical in describing the sound for the band's new record, set for a mid-2005 release: "It's getting into a space-age jazz element," adds Coyne. "Hopefully not too far out of the realm of what's listenable." The sound will be "a sort of progressive Dixieland." Having earned a Grammy Award, as well as several 'album of the year' nods, the band have shut themselves away in Tarbox Road Studios with producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Mogwai, Sparklehorse) for the new studio set - tentatively titled "At War With The Mystics". One early title is 'Mr. Ambulance Driver'. As Coyne says, "It's about a guy and a gal, and the gal is dying after a car accident and it's the moment they share as the ambulance approaches.

Son Volt Reunite

Roots-rock outfit Son Volt has reunited and is about to begin work on a new studio album. Group members Jay Farrar, Dave and Jim Boquist and Mike Heidorn recently ended a five-year hiatus to record a track for the Alejandro Escovedo tribute album, "Por Vida." The group is planning to return to the road next year. "It felt like we hit the ground running," Farrar says. "Give years seemed like five days at that point. It proved that more recording and performing as Son Volt is something that should happen." Son Volt's last studio album was 1998's "Wide Swing Tremolo," Farrar's most recent solo release came in June with the live collection "Stone, Steel & Bright Lights," issued on his own Transmit Sound label.

Grandaddy frontman makes comp

Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle has assembled a mix CD to be issued under the moniker "Below the Radio" this fall via Ultra Records. Beyond tracks by Pavement, Beck, Snow Patrol and Elbow, the set features a new Grandaddy track, "Nature Anthem." "I can¹t help but notice how they are not big 'heavy hitters' off of the albums that they came from, or the songs that the record labels would have suggested as being 'singles,'" Lytle says. "They did although end up being my favorite songs from those albums and this fact has intrigued me since childhood. Why am I usually more smitten with the unobvious hits than the obvious hits? Somewhere in this list lies the answer." Other artists represented on the album include Beulah, Earlimart, Giant Sand, Goldenboy, the Handsome Family and Blonde Redhead.

TV On The Radio Cover Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tour With Faint, Pixies

TV on the Radio haven't earned marquee status or VMA nominations like their friends in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But the band's buzz, like the dark, rhythmic momentum of its songs, continues to build. The group's debut full-length, Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, is a finalist for the prestigious Shortlist Music Prize and one of its songs was featured in "The Manchurian Candidate The Brooklyn art-rockers hope to capitalize on the accolades the album has received with a busy fall schedule that includes a tour and new music. Starting October 6 in Chicago, TVOTR will head out on a two-month jaunt with the Faint, the last tour they'll embark on until next year. Even though TVOTR have spent most of 2004 on the road, lead singer Tunde Adebimpe said he's looking forward to the upcoming dates. "I'm psyched to go out and play," he said. "I try to have very, very few expectations for a tour, though, because so much can go right — and wrong — that a good place to start is from zero." The band will release a three-song EP on October 12. The disc combines the album version of "The Wrong Way" with two new songs: a haunting cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Modern Romance" and a spastic dance-rock track called "New Health Rock." Both were recorded while the band was on tour earlier this year. The group will finish out the year with two special shows opening up for the reunited Pixies, December 8 in Washington, D.C., and December 11 in New York. A hidden track on the group's debut EP, Young Liars, was a cover of the Pixies' "Mr. Grieves." "Four months ago, I was saying, 'God, I hope I get to see the Pixies, I hope I get to see the Pixies.' And then someone calls and says [I'm] playing with them," marveled Adebimpe. "It's cool. I would say thank you to them but the more I learn about what goes into this, they might not even know we're playing with them. I'm still glad we're doing it, though." After the shows, TVOTR plan to take three to four months off before heading back into the studio. TV on the Radio tour dates, according to the band's spokesperson. Mark Lanegan hurt in car accident

Singer/songwriter Mark Lanegan was injured in a car accident in Los Angeles last night, forcing the cancellation of seven upcoming East Coast tour dates. Lanegan was not at fault and was not seriously hurt, but is under doctor's orders to rest for several weeks, his spokesperson said. The artist is expected to return to the road Oct. 10 in San Diego, with dates on tap through an Oct. 26 performance in Brussels. The former Screaming Trees/Queens Of The Stone Age vocalist is touring in support of his new Beggars Banquet album, "Bubblegum".

FRANZ FOOD FIGHT!

FRANZ FERDINAND are being chased by debt collectors due to an unpaid restaurant bill. The bill, dating back to April, relates to a meal at Frocks restaurant in Hackney, London where drummer Paul Thompson and his wife Esther celebrated their marriage. Owner of the restaurant Andy Steel said: "I just got fobbed off so I've got a debt collector trying to pursue it." A spokesman for the band said: "He's been away so much for the past six or seven months that he's not been able to keep track of his bank account," reports Ananova.

Rilo Kiley:: “More Adventurous” (Album Review)

I can’t listen to Rilo Kiley’s “More Adventurous” at work. Every time I slip the disk into my laptop and power up the speakers, by song two or three, someone is in my office asking me “What IS that song?” I think it is former child TV star Jenny Lewis’ sultry voice that catches in the back of her throat with a slow ache that makes them come running to my door. Or maybe it is the cleverly written lyrics about everyday situations that seem about to spiral out of control…but suddenly don’t. I’m not sure, but it works every time. With a mix of styles and sounds, “More Adventurous” seems the work of a band on its own adventure. On “Portions for Foxes” and “Love and War” Rilo Kiley goes full force into the land of rocked out pop song replete with tight drumming and flying guitars. Over it all Jenny Lewis’ voice growls high and loud – folks who want lip-synch alone in their rooms Pat Benatar-style, these are for you. The album veers from the languid 40’s sounds of “Ripcord” to the heartbreakingly pretty tones of “It Just Is” and “The Absence of God”. The attention to detail in each song give the album staying power, it’s not just the vocals that get all the attention, there are orchestral arrangements to spare and smart beats to back up Jenny’s gorgeous voice. These are songs that stick in your head all day, and just when you think you are over your personal favorite, a new fav comes to take its place. Back in my office, it’s quitting time and I can’t leave because one more person just stopped in their tracks outside my door listening to Jenny sing “Does he love you? Does he love you?” on track two and inevitably the question comes again…”What IS that song?.” (Review by: Erica Goldsmith)

Human Television:: S/T (Album Review)

I’ve grown weary of easy comparisons. Influences, I can live with. Carbon copies are a little tiring. Yes, Human Television are “C-86”, early Creation, the sound of a pre-Acid House England. The press kit reels off Felt, The Wedding Present, The Go-Betweens, even New Order as references. And there are ghosts of all these bands haunting these songs. Maybe I’m too old, having lived through this movement first hand on the dear old shores of Blighty. Maybe I’m just hoping, fingers crossed, for something original to blow me away. Maybe I’m too jaded. Or maybe I don’t want to see grown men in paisley shirts and flat caps ineffectually strumming Rickenbackers once again. Whatever the reasons, I can’t really get behind Human Television. However, if you are young and haven’t been beaten to death with this kind of music, repeatedly, then definitely check this out. And if you are older and want to reminisce about the good old days when The Chameleons and The House of Love ruled your world, please feel free to listen. Human Television are not a bad band. They are just a jangly, popadelic déjà vu I can happily live without. (Review by L.A.M.)

Guitar String Legend Ernie Ball Dies in California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Guitar string maker Ernie Ball, famed for strings that almost single-handedly allowed rock groups in the 1960s to play wailing riffs and belt out endless vibratos, has died in San Luis Obispo, California, at age 74, his family said on Friday. Roland Sherwood "Ernie" Ball founded the Ernie Ball Company in 1962 after his strings became the hottest-selling item in his family's music shop. The Beach Boys, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix used Ernie Ball Slinky Strings, sold in distinctive neon-colored packages. "He changed the way people thought of guitar accessories, and how they sold and marketed them, and to this day the Ernie Ball way is the industry standard," said Sterling Ball, Ernie's son and chief executive of the private San Luis Obispo company.

Coming soon.. The best of The Verve

The legacy of U.K. rock act the Verve will be celebrated on the CD "This Is Music: The Singles 92-92" and a "Best of" DVD of music videos. The projects will arrive Nov. 1 internationally via Virgin; a spokesperson for the North American arm of the label says the items are not presently on the release schedule. Former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft is at work on his third solo album, the follow-up to 2002's "Human Conditions."

New ATP "The Nightmare before Christmas" UK lineup announced

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun, but the time has come for a foray into the dark side of All Tomorrow’s Parties. After 5 years of events in April, ATP Concerts add a new date to the UK festival calendar. Welcome to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Curated in its inaugural year by acclaimed British artists, Jake and Dinos Chapman, the event will be held at Camber Sands Holiday Centre, East Sussex on December 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2004. Headlining the festival will be the legendary Throbbing Gristle, Mercury Rev and Violent Femmes. Also confirmed are Shellac, Peaches, The Fall, The Minutemen, Carl Craig, Wolf Eyes, Lightning Bolt, a Skam Records room and a Mego Records room and many more to come. All Tomorrow’s Parties has been hailed as “Britain’s most inspired festival” by the Daily Telegraph, and the Christmas event promises to preserve the same eclectic spirit by retaining the concept of a curator. Jake and Dinos Chapman first rose to prominence with their three-dimensional recreations of Goya’s series of etchings, The Disasters of War. Since then, their experimental works have continued to push the boundaries in the art world and their curatorship of The Nightmare Before Christmas promises to be just as extreme. Tickets are priced at £120, including a 3-day festival pass and 3 nights accommodation. Like the annual April event, ticket includes performances starting from mid-afternoon with bars and DJ sets through till dawn, plus three nights in a self-catering chalet accommodation all with private bathroom suites. Onsite facilities include an indoor swimming pool, mini-golf, go-karting, restaurants & fast food outlets as well as a supermarket and off-license. Camber Sands is approximately 60 miles from London, or around an hour and half drive. Alternatively, a train into Rye Village and then a short bus journey can reach the site. Tickets for The Nightmare Before Christmas can be purchased directly through www.atpfestival.com by clicking the Buy Tickets in the menu bar on this page or by telephoning + 44 (0)-115-912-9000 or online via www.wayahead.com or in person via Stargreen Box Office on + 44 (0)207-734-8932 or www.stargreen.com or from www.ticketline.co.uk or by calling + 44 (0)161-832-1111
