The Streets:: A Grand Don't Come For Free (Album Review)

"I respect those UK cats," said Atlanta based alt.rapper Pissedon recently. "They're doing some crazy shit. It's interesting, the rhythms and shit. But it's too cold for me man. I like my music warm, you know?" We know. While UK cats have finally found their own rhyme style, we still seem incapable of expressing any joy. Glacial, sparse, dead eyed sounds flow out of the UK like fake tits from a surgeon's office. Interestingly, the whole Grime thing, the new beats that clambered out of the ashes of garage, FruityLoops, PlayStation, midi keyboard, they're the same beats that Lil' John, The Ying Yang Twins, and all those Southern American self proclaimed "Kings Of Crunk" have been mashing out for the same amount of time. But those southerners drench those beats in shockingly catchy bellow along hooks, usually comprising of one new slang word. Over here, we're flooding the same beats with frantic, garbled emceeing, using as many words as we can to mask anything too open, or naked. The Streets was always a bit outside of all that though. The record was called 'Original Pirate Material', but outside of that Stanton Warriors remix, Mike Skinner was never clasped to the bosom of the underground community. He didn't quite emcee - he was more Ian Dury than Eminem. And that record shone with a deep warmth that enchanted all that encountered it. Mike will have problems with this record because it is, in the main, a glacial UK keyboard beats record, with some spoken word stuff and hooks on top. Most of the hooks are appalling - a few, sung by Skinner, like 'Such A Twat', and opener 'It Was Supposed To Be So Easy' are enjoyable, but when he lets his mates croon soupily all over his beats, shit gets distinctly unpleasant. Mike's given up the idea of rapping completely, so his delivery is pretty pure now - the Brummy is thick, and as a result he can concentrate more on the lyrics, which, aside from the odd clunky last line, are a definite improvement on the first record. His attention to detail is particularly impressive, from clothes to faces to places. So what's good about the record is Mike, telling tales about his broken TV, his best mate and his girlfriend and the shagging they might be doing. What's bad about the record is the guest vocalists - most of the songs are ruined by terrible hooks, or, in the case of the otherwise mighty 'Get Out Of My House', a truly horrible female sort-of-rap. That and some of the beats get pretty cold and samey after a while. But it's warmth that saves the record. Early on moments like 'I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way', an ode to staying in caning with the missus, hint at the glory to come, but it really isn't until the last track that we are properly reminded of why we said all those nice things about Mike Skinner way back when. 'Empty Cans' is a fucking masterpiece. Kicking off dark and horrible, over some unrelenting dancehall kick rhythm, Skinner cusses down his mates, his girl, the whole fucking world, for being dicks and not giving a shit about all his misfortune. "No one gives a crap about Mike that's why I'm acting nasty" he glowers on the hook. This goes on for three minutes or whatever, and stops, and you think, wow, that's that then. He's pissed off. Pretty harsh way to kill the album, but pretty brave. But still, what a grump… At that point you hear the pianos, hope bursting through like a room full of sunshine. And you realise stuff's actually going to be OK. I won't spoil it entirely for you, because, after paying attention to the album, it’s almost a reward. It is huge, and lush, and inspiring. By the time it's done, you are ready to believe in Mike Skinner again.

Stars honor Leonard Cohen

There's more to Leonard Cohen than lugubrious melancholy.
BRIGHTON, England -- Canada's finest singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen celebrates his 70th birthday later this year, but his influence shows no sign of waning. Fans even have the prospect of a new album in store. Tribute Web sites are currently buzzing with news that Cohen is recording new material after spending several years living as a Zen monk in California. There are no indications that Cohen will tour in the near future though, so the only way of hearing his remarkable music live is when others perform it. One such concert took place last weekend in the southern English resort of Brighton. The event, called "Came So Far For Beauty," was curated by Hollywood producer Hal Willner and reprised a similar show in Brooklyn's Prospect Park last summer. The amazing line-up of artists helped to attract both diehard fans to the Brighton Dome as well as those less acquainted with Cohen's work; all of the 30 songs were rapturously received by the audience as if the man himself were on stage. Music at the concert -- the final event of the month-long Brighton Festival -- was provided by some of the finest jazz and folk players, with voices by famous names from the world of rock like Nick Cave and Jarvis Cocker as well as folk stars like Beth Orton, Laurie Anderson and the McGarrigle sisters. Cohen's former backing singers Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla gave faithful renditions of iconic songs such as "Bird on the Wire," while Cave's upbeat version of "Diamonds in the Mine" and Cocker's duet with Orton on "Death of a Ladies' Man" proved there was more to Cohen's work's than melancholy. None of the stars attempted to imitate Cohen's often-lugubrious delivery and the final song of the three-hour concert, a rousing all-star version of "Don't Go Home With Your Hard-On," left fans new and old hungry for new material from the old master. The Libertines Lose Singer

Pete Doherty, lead singer of the Libertines, said he is leaving the band to live in Paris with his girlfriend. In an interview with The Sun, the Libertines' Doherty, acknowledged his problems with drug addiction and his band. Due to the consistent flow of visitors and distractions at the Priory, a drug rehabilitation center, the musician has been unable to kick his addiction and feels a Parisian sojourn with his girlfriend will help. Increasing difficulties with his bandmates, namely one time best friend Carl Barat and manager Alan McGee also led to the singer's decision. Last year, Doherty burglarized Barat's home, leading to three weeks in prison. Doherty went on to say "Being a Libertine is supposed to be about freedom - but I don't feel free at the moment. I want people to take me seriously as a musician - not just portray me as a junkie."

Ernest Rodgers-Willie The Chimney Sweeper
Recorded in 1927. This same tune was recorded at about the same time by Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon, well known at the time for his tunes full of innuendo (not to mention his parallel career as a female impersonator), as "Willie The Weeper." These tunes may be the earliest known "reefer" tunes in American popular culture (with the exception of "La Cucaracha"). The references to "smoking pills" in these "Willie" tunes isn't that strange when it is taken into consideration that drug vernacular at the time referred to balls of opium as "pills." Ernest Rodgers was a "citybilly" type who also was an established journalist in Atlanta.

Franz Ferdinand's sophomore release may be out as early as January.

The band, while answering questions, said that, despite its touring, it had begun writing its sophomore album. The follow-up to this year's Franz Ferdinand (Domino). will be out in the beginning of next year, according to Guitarist Nick McCarthy. No plans for recording the record have been announced.

DARKNESS CLOSING IN ON NEW ALBUM RELEASE!

JUSTIN HAWKINS has said THE DARKNESS have completed their second album. Speaking at yesterday’s Ivor Novello awards, the singer said that the album is "ready to go". He told XFM: "The difficult second album? We’re sailing through it, It’s done, its ready to go. The whole thing's done. All the packaging and stuff - the artwork and what have you - is all we’ve got to look at now." AC/DC producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange (the husband of Shania Twain) has reportedly working with the Lowestoft four-piece in the studio. The veteran has also worked with Bryan Adams, Def Leppard and Foreigner. The band are now starting to think of a title. Guitarist Dan Hawkins said: "It's gonna take a while. The last title took about seven months to chose, I think. So seven months of sheer hell. It looks promising though." Frankie Poullain added: "There’s an old title that keeps on asserting itself, and that’s, three words, ‘Short Fat Cock’. As we don’t know the length of the album yet we may have to just sit on that one. Not sit on it literally, of course… that could be quite painful." The Darkness are confirmed for various festival appearances throughout the summer.

Keane-“Hopes & Fears” (Album Review)

What a tiresome album. Coldplay without the soul. Did Coldplay even have a soul? No. But at least they had a heart. This is not my kind of music. Never has been, never will be. This is reminiscent of all those awful 80’s bands who tried to have that “new wave” edge. Red Rider? Wang Chung? Corey Hart? No thanks. I’m told that the popular kids love Keane. Britain’s NME said they “sound like the Pet Shop Boys stripped of their irritating irony”. My God, the Pet Shop Boys stripped of irony would make one dull band. Hence, Keane. I know they went to #1 in the UK, that they sold 50,000 copies of “Hopes & Fears” in a single day, that youthful journalists worldwide are falling over themselves to compliment this banality. Fair enough. Here’s the facts for you, the record buyer. Keane are a trio(drums, keyboard, vocals) hailing from Southern England! They are signed to Interscope! They are about to embark on their maiden U.S. tour! They inspire mediocrity and nothingness! Their music is going to be popular at senior proms, weddings, and on “Now That’s What I Call Music Volume #286” alongside every other bore me to tears with your blandness act. They are a mundane and contrived beauty. And there is nothing uglier that that. (Review by: LAM aka DJ My Little Pony)

More details on the final GBV record

As tipped here last month, Guided By Voices will release its final studio album, "Half Smiles of the Decomposed," Aug. 24 via Matador. The 14-track set was produced by Todd Tobias, who was behind the boards for the group's 2003 album "Earthquake Glue." GBV frontman Robert Pollard recently confirmed the group will split at year's end. "Half Smiles" is musically of a piece with GBV's past few albums, blending upbeat rockers like "Gonna Never Have To Die" and "Asphyxiated Circle" with more meditative fare such as "Window of My World" and "A Second Spurt of Growth." A snippet from what sounds like a television evangelist can be heard at the beginning of "Sons of Apollo," while keyboards and acoustic guitars underscore the penultimate cut "(S)mothering and Coaching."
Album opener "Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking)" seems to reflect Pollard's decision to dissolve GBV in lines like "This is not my day / nobody really cares anymore anyhow / nobody called again / 'cause they said that I'm too lazy to stay alive." GBV only has six tour dates on its schedule at present, beginning with a June 4 show in its Dayton, Ohio, hometown. The itinerary is open between mid-June and Aug. 19, when the group will play a free concert on Manhattan's Hudson River Pier. A spokesperson says a full tour will follow the new album's release. And while Pollard previously said GBV's final gig would be on New Year's Eve in New York, plans are now calling for that show to be held in Chicago.
Here is the track list for "Half Smiles of the Decomposed":
"Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking)"
"Sleep Over Jack"
"Girls of Wild Strawberries"
"Gonna Never Have To Die"
"Window of My World"
"The Closets of Henry"
"Tour Guide at the Winston Churchill Memorial"
"Asia Minor"
"Sons of Apollo"
"Sing for Your Meat"
"Asphyxiated Circle"
"A Second Spurt of Growth"
"(S)mothering and Coaching"
"Huffman Prairie Flying Field"

The Strokes' Casablancas To Marry

The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas has reportedly got engaged to the band's assistant manager, sources have reported. The news was initially revealed during the Strokes headline slot at the Central Park SummerStage last Wednesday, when the 24-year-old introduced 'Hard To Explain' to the huge crowd saying, "I'm getting married and it's hard to explain!" Although Casablancas failed to name names, sources claim that New-York based Wiz Kid Management employee Juliet Joslin, who co-manages the band, is the lady in question - with US Entertainment magazine Page Six claiming the two have been dating for just over a month. The SummerStage show was the climax of the band's huge 40-date US tour to promote their new album 'Room On Fire'. Later this year the Strokes head over to Europe to headline, among others, the T in the Park festival in Balado, Scotland on July 10 and V2004 Festival in Staffordshire, Weston Park on August 21 and Chelmsford, Hylands Park August 22

Brian Wilson to Headline Festival Six Times

Brian Wilson will be performing classic Beach Boys tunes and the entirely of his SMiLE album, as he headlines six nights of a London summer festival named after one of the songs from the mythic non-album, "Heroes & Villains". XFM reports that the festival, which will be occupying the Royal Festival Hall in London's South Bank Centre for 11 nights between July 24th and August 7th, also boasts Spiritualized, Pere Ubu, Air, and Badly Drawn Boy as part of its lineup. The South Bank Centre is at the epicenter of the London fine arts world, housing the three theaters of the Royal National Theatre complex and the bfi National Film Theatre as well as the Royal Festival Hall and others. It's a hallmark of ultra-modernist architecture, and, by all accounts, looks pretty much like a parking garage. Wilson's first four shows there were announced in this space just last week without mention of the festival; the newly announced dates are on July 30th and 31st. Wilson has also added an August festival date in Benicassim, Spain to his broad European summer lineup.

Wilson is also preparing to release his first solo album in umpteen years, Gettin' in Over My Head, on June 22nd via Rhino Records. The album, which is in the early running for "Ugliest Album Cover Ever" (though Deerhoof's Milk Man is a hotshot contender), has Wilson collaborating with a variety of rock royalty, including Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and brother Carl Wilson. Wilson wrote or co-wrote all the songs on Gettin' in Over My Head, and produced the album as well. Tracklist:

THE FALL:: LIVE @ The Knitting Factory, NYC 4/9/04 (Music Video)

Mark E Smith and his band The Fall were post-punk from before most people were actually aware punk existed. Existential rhythm and rant. The pinstand was there with them from the first Step Forward days, and we were very fond of the first manager Kay Carrol. So here we are 24 years later, at the 2nd of two sold-out shows at the Knit. While Mark might be aging like the rest of us, both his band and audience were seriously youthful and exuberant. Mark suffered a broken hip recently and staggered on to the stage in crutches, before sitting at a small table to perform. They did a number of songs off the new album - The Real New Fall LP (soon to be released on Brooklyn indie Narnack Records) - 'Boxoctosis' and ' Theme from Sparta FC' - see clips below. The band also did several cover versions, including The Move's "I Can Hear The Grass Grow, the obscure UK hit 'Grooving With Mr Bloe', the 4 Seasons 'Walk Like A Man' (3rd clip below), and encored with the Big Bopper's 'White Lightning'.

Clinic Finalize Winchester Cathedral Tracklist

Winchester Cathedral, which leaked to select file-sharing services over the weekend sans-song titles, is slated for an August 23rd release via Domino Records, and finds Clinic incorporating some unusual instrumentation, but never at the expense of the distinctive sound they've long since established as theirs and theirs alone. Tour dates in support of the new record would not be unfathomable for the conceivable future, but, having just wrapped up a preliminary 14-date U.S. tour at San Diego's Casbah venue on Sunday, they're not expected to hit the road again until late summer-- and even then, they're likely to kick it off in their homeland. Regardless, after multiple changes to the tracklist, the following has been identified as the official, final tracklist by sources at Domino HQ:

04 The Magician
05 Vertical Takeoff

Ben Kweller:: On My Way (Album Review)

After the demise of glam rock, cock rock, and grunge rock there was slacker rock. Unfortunately by its very nature slacker rock was far too slack to even maintain its own genre and was taken over by those who had both the abundance of time and the lack of girlfriends to get the job done. Thus geek rock was born. Suddenly a whole generation of pimply pariahs were vaulted into vogue by saviors such as They Might Be Giants, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World and Ween to name but a few, and it seemed that perhaps the geek would indeed finally inherit the earth. In 2002 fever pitch hit camp nerd when a man-child named Ben Kewller released his brilliant debut album Sha Sha, receiving critical worldwide acclaim from dude and dork alike. Now two years later Ben Kweller is back to re-arrange your sock drawer, argue with you over the internet, and sport fashion so far out of date that it's been uncool twice already and is almost back for a third helping. While On My Way is not as immediately catchy as his previous effort, there are enough peaks on the radar to warrant this a sophomore success. The current single 'The Rules' is BK at his most rock, resuscitating that trademark voice and proving that he can still shout in tune, while tracks such as 'Down' and 'My Apartment' are great examples of what happens when artists make sure they do their song writing homework before they hit the studio. But then again, would a geek have it any other way? Definitely worth checking out, even if you;re not a virgin anymore.

Ishiro Honda's 1954 GODZILLA (Movie Review)

GODZILLA turns 50 this year, and in his honor, the original Japanese version of the film is playing art houses in various cities here in the USA. What do you mean original Japanese version? Raymond Burr is nowhere to be found, spliced into this fine horror & morality tale as "Steve Martin," the American reporter sending back stories of the sea-monster. The absence of an American interloper in this restored GODZILLA ought to be construed as a functional and contemporary message of the film's inherent ethical debate. GODZILLA always was a cautionary tale. Ten years after the United States nuked two bucolic Japanese towns, and continued to test atomic weapons in the Pacific, the Japanese struck back with an even bigger weapon of the pop culture sort. The T-Rex of the Sea has influenced countless filmmakers, authors and other artists for the past five decades with its magnificent moral and ethical rhetoric... creating some great monster-spawn as a result. The translation has been refreshed as well as the print. This cold-war morality tale is as relevant today in all its B-movie horror glory as ever. It's clear as the nearly pristene black and white print: Why and how could this monster survive the H-bomb? What the hell kind of mutant is he? Why is the scientist holding out on his weapon of mass destruction, the Oxygen Destroyer, when it could save his immediate world from the terror of Godzilla? Isn't "Godzilla" just an urban legend anyway? Could he be just a figment of the collective imagination? What clues can we find in his radioactive footprints that will help society without killing the misunderstood behemoth? What will make Godzilla rise again? Tech geek's note: The "special effects" of the 50's aren't at all cheesey and bad. They are completely contextual, and since we've all seen Tim Burton's ED WOOD, we ARE looking for the cables that the miniature planes are suspended on as they buzz Godzilla. You can see 'em! It's cool. This monster looks a LOT better than the one Matthew Broderick battled in the failed attempt at bringing Godzilla to NYC in the boring and stupid 140-minute 1998 Roland Emmerich helmed trainwreck masquerading as summer entertainment. Ishiro Honda's 1954 GODZILLA really is a masterpiece.
This link will tell you where the original, restored GODZILLA will be playing:

I have seen the first Harry Potter movie - The Sorcerer's Stone, and have used the second, The Chamber of Secrets, as the movie to which I fall asleep. I haven't made it past the first 30 minutes of Chamber of Secrets, by the way. It's a brilliant soporific. All that aside, I couldn't resist the invitation to see the world premier of HP3 at Radio City Music Hall. At two hours and 16 minutes, HP3 is a lot more than adolescent fare. That's a long time to ask a kid to sit still and be quiet. Unlike the previous adventures in this franchise, however, HP3 moves at a well modulated pace -- opens fast and furious and funny. I'll excuse HP's 1 & 2 for the responsibility of setting up all the Potter back-story and the development of a huge cast of characters. Still. They're long movies. Directed this time around not by Chris Columbus, who directed the first two, but by Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien), the Harry Potter franchise has come into its next phase: darkness on the edge of adolescence (sorry boss). Columbus produced. Credit Columbus for bringing a fresh vision to the series; Cuaron's pacing and ability to venture into the dark side gave this story depth and fantastic grey areas. No clear black and white, good and bad. This movie is, as I must presume the book is, filled with word plays and clues and double entendres and visual sight gags. They all work, and they're great methods to educate today's media-focused kids who would rather watch HP3 than read some expository tome. And if you're the adult taking the kids to the movies, you certainly won't feel insulted. For example: This installment begins with Harry at his Aunt & Uncle's house. The Aunt is to Harry, merely his Uncle's windbag wife. She's nasty and talks trash about Harry's parents. He won't have it. After two years at Hogwarts, his wizard skills are more than adept. Like Bewitched's Tabitha and her baby magic powers, Harry LITERALLY turns the Aunt into a hot air balloon. She flies off into England's wild blue yonder. He runs away from home -- for this is a punishable offense. Young wizards aren't supposed to do magic outside of Hogwarts. (Who knew? those who read the books, I guess.) Stranded on some suburban street, Harry is picked up by the Knight Bus, a phantom purple triple decker bus with a blind driver and a jive talking Rasta shrunken head navigating. The bus can't be seen by non-wizards and non-witches and flies through traffic narrowly avoiding accidents along the way. All in the first five minutes. Like I said: fast, furious and funny. Back at Hogwarts, its the same old rivalries and new lessons and new professors. Prof. Lupin just happens to be in the same train compartment as Harry, Ron and Hermione en route to Hogwarts. The train stalls along the way, and rain turns to freeze and Harry is accosted and affected by a Dementor, which Prof. Lupin makes go away. This sets up the rest of the adventure. Sirius Black, a serial killer, involved in the death of the elder Potters, has escaped from the Wizard Prison, Azkaban. The Dementors are the soul-sucking guards looking for him. At this point, if you're an adult and know your general vocabulary and mythology, it won't take you long to figure out there's a wolf (a werewolf, in fact --- Prof. Lupin) and a black dog (Sirius Black). Its very exciting when these facts are revealed and you can use that as a lesson for your kids or your nieces/nephews. Maybe I'm becoming a softie in my old age, but I cherished this aspect of the script. The epic offers other lessons for the kids (in the story and in the audience), and textures in the portrayal of characters and the examples of irony, morality, loyalty/betrayal and the language related to these life-elements. What is the meaning of "rat" and why is Ron's pet so important? We have nothing to fear but fear itself. Who are your friends? Are things always what they seem? Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. I was looking forward to that. Oldman is under-used, but I guess Sirius is coming back. This is one of those great cliff-hanger elements that makes you want the next movie to come out soon. Emma Thompson as the near-sighted Professor Trelawney does a great comic turn. She teaches divination - reading tea leaves and crystal balls. She is blind as a bat and wears coke-bottle thick glasses, but she does have the vision. Michael Gambon replaces the delightful but now deceased Richard Harris as Dumbledore, and plays him with dry English wit. The regulars turn in solid performances. As these type of movies do, HP3 relies heavily on computer generated imagery and special effects. I hate that stuff. I'd rather see a tall Japanese guy in a big lizard suit. But here, the deft artisans that cloak Harry in Invisibility or have rendered a half-horse, half- raptor Hippogryffon (or something like that....) or created the animated Marauder's Map have completely out-done just about every special effects house in business today. The mattes are seamless and flawless: Harry appears and disappears as if like MAGIC. The beast moves gracefully and without those obvious algebraic vector-calculated movements that say the Jurassic Park dinosaurs had. In a couple words: HP3 is highly entertaining. Fun summer fare, and probably worth the up to $10 it now costs to see a movie. Makes you want to be a wizard.

Celebrity headcount for the film and after party:
(c'mon.... you wanted to know!)
The cast: Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Malfoy, Ron's brother and sister, Hagrid, Snape, Lupin and their creators: director Alfonso Cuaron, producers Chris Columbus and David Heyman,Local celebs and their kids: Susan Sarandon & Tim Robbins, LL Cool J, Christie Brinkley, Chrissie Hynde, Gina Gershon, Michael Imperioli, Steven Van Zandt, Lee Lee Sobieski, plus others I have forgotten, but who you'll see on Entertainment Tonight.

Sufjan Stevens- Seven Swans (Album Review)

I miss Elliott Smith. Guess I miss him more than I thought I would. Not to shoulder Sufjan Stevens with that burden, just to say that the fractured pop songs on “Seven Swans” are eerily reminiscent of Mr. Smith’s finest work. This is good news. As is the fact that masterminding this whole album is producer Daniel Smith of the brilliant Danielson Famile. This album is astonishing. The fourth full length release from multi-instrumentalist Stevens is that perfect mix of sorrow and joy. How did I not know of him until now? How can music be so sonic and so sparse at the same time? This is so achingly beautiful, so intimate. Just like the aforementioned fallen soul. Hell, it’s not a million miles away from, dare I say, Simon and Garfunkel’s most gracious pop moments. Layers of vocals and odd instrumentation make this album a unique joy. A bittersweet masterpiece for those lacking in grace and beauty. (review by LAM aka DJ My Little Pony)

Joy Division film 'in planning'

A film based on the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis is to be made, according to reports. The film will be developed by American producer Amy Hobby, who was behind the Maggie Gyllenhall film Secretary, trade newspaper Variety said. Curtis committed suicide aged 23 in 1980, shortly before he was due to tour the US. Joy Division are regarded as one of rock's most iconic bands.Dance music star Moby is to act as the film's musical advisor. The biopic of the life of the tragic rock star follows the 2003 film 24 Hour Party People, which told the history of the Manchester music scene through the trials of Joy Division's label, Factory Records.Curtis was played by the actor Sean Harris in the film. 'Tragic romantic' Curtis' death - and his bandmates' comeback as the band New Order - were dealt with in the film. The film is being made with the help of London-based Neal Weisman, who is friends with Factory Records former chief Tony Wilson. "Ian Curtis was a tragic romantic in the classic sense of the word," Mr Weisman told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival. "He always thought he would be famous as some kind of poet and die by his mid-20s, and that's what happened." Joy Division became famous for their bleak, introspective music, which became a hallmark of Britain's post-punk music scene. Their debut album Unknown Pleasures became a cult record, and the band had a global hit with their mournful song Love Will Tear Us Apart. The film is expected to start shooting next year. There are no details of cast as yet.

DARKNESS ACID SHOCK

JUSTIN HAWKINS has had his throat surgery to correct acid reflux and has said his recovery is coming along well. As revealed the vocalist recently revealed his plans to go under the knife to correct a recurring heartburn problem. Hawkins has now revealed full details of the operation. He said: "I had a hiatus hernia and acid reflux. Basically, there’s a sphincter inside your throat, as well as up your bottom. It’s supposed to control how much acid is let up into your throat. "But mine was broken so my stomach was spitting acid into the throat. It was literally burning my voice up." Justin told The Sun newspaper that his condition was "one of the worst in medical history". He continued: "Doctors stuck a tube down my nose to measure the acidity. 3% is norrmal. They operate at 12%. But I clocked up a whopping 82%. It was one of the worst cases in medical history. I was taking indigestion tablets to stop it. But they weren’t working so I had to go through with the procedure." Because the condition has been operated on, The Darkness will still be able to make their appearances at this year’s summer festivals, which includes slots at T In The Park and Carling Weeknd: Reading and Leeds.

KISS::Sydney (Australia) Superdome- 17 May 2004 (Concert Review)

For anyone not going through puberty or losing their virginity on a beanbag in the early seventies, the Kiss phenomenon will most likely be completely unfathomable to you. Though perhaps even more unfathomable than the Kissteria of the 70s, is the Kissteria of 90s, strangely still going strong to this very day. Why is everyone getting so worked up about a bunch of rock dinosaurs from 30 years ago? Why are the face-painted four placed on a pedestal for writing a handful of good songs and an absolute container full of rubbish? And why is it that a group who dress up like they’re a float short of a mardi gras have a die-hard fan base largely composed of bogans and homophobes? But like all true phenomena, questions such as these will always remain unanswerable, and the only thing you can do is sit back and enjoy the spectacle. Tonight’s display made Cirque du Soleil look like street theatre. Four, I repeat four stories of amplifiers. Retina-frying eardrum-splitting rows of pyrotechnics exploding from floor to ceiling. Massive fireballs so hot I could have roasted a marshmallow from 50 meters away. And that was just the backdrop. When (acting) Peter Criss’ drum kit wasn’t taking off like the space shuttle, Gene Simmons was being hurled to the rafters. And for the people in the cheap seats, Paul Stanley offered the next best thing by hitching a ride on a flying fox half way into the arena to serenade the back rows with “I was made for loving you”. Every cliché in the stadium rock book was performed tonight - the rock moves, the tired banter, the tragic outfits; but to Kiss’ defence, they were the ones who wrote it. And to be honest, if it wasn’t a non stop laughable cliché fest, it would have been a bitter disappointment.

Vandals tour and finish off new record

Veteran punk act the Vandals will return June 29 with its 12th studio album, "Hollywood Potato Chip." The set will be released on Kung Fu Records, overseen by guitarist Warren Fitzgerald and bassist Joe Escalante. The 13-track album features a cover of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" alongside such originals as "Be a Good Robot" and "Designed by Satan." As previously reported, the Vandals can be seen on this summer's Warped Tour, which kicks off June 25 in Houston and runs through Aug. 3 in Virginia Beach, Va. Beginning June 1, the group will invite fans to download instrumental and lyrics-only versions of two album tracks, and to then submit a video of themselves performing over the music. "Standout entrants, either good or bad, may get a shot at performing with the Vandals this summer," the group says.

Oz Rock 101

In the attempt to both put Australia on the map and make sure only the good stuff gets on the export ship, the Kingblind Sydney office presents Oz Rock 101, a bi-weekly heads up on the best Australian bands you may never hear. In this space we’ll be focusing on the contemporaries, the locals, the ones that deserve your attention. Some you may already know, some you may not, but one thing is for sure: all, you will love. Well hopefully…

Screamfeeder
For some bands, all they have to do is release one song that strikes a chord in the hearts of teenie boppers and the coffers of record execs, and their future is instantly written in lights. For most, this is a highly elusive road, and often that’s exactly the way they want it. For nearly 15 years and 7 albums, Brisbane’s Screamfeeder have been trekking this path of the happy journeymen, never reaching the dizzy heights of multi platinum record sales and standing room only stadium gigs, but always producing quality fuzzy guitar pop to the delight of a fan base that is undoubtedly much larger than they care to let on. They’ve been around so long they’re part of the furniture - like an old couch that no matter how many newer and flashier models come out, you know you’ll never ever part with it. There’s no throwaway hook. No gimmick. Just two guys and a girl, happily sweating it out being slaves to their passion. Three cheers for slavery.

Pavement "Perfect Depth.. etc " (MP3 Download)

(Live at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, 1994) - Here's a little treat for all of the Pavement junkies out there. In addition to just being a great performance from a significant period of their career (just after the release of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and the addition of drummer Steve West to the line-up), this recording is notable for two things. First, "Perfect Depth" was a rarely played live, and whenever it was performed, it was in a more conventional arrangement which allowed the lyrics to be intelligable and the vocal melody to be the focus of the song rather than feedback and white noise. Second, this version of "She Believes" features Stephen Malkmus playing the guitar part from the Sun City Girls' "Space Prophet Dogon" over the intro. (via Flux da blog man)

Jazz Drummer Elvin Jones Dies

Elvin Jones, arguably the most influential drummer of the modern jazz era, died yesterday (May 18) in Englewood, N.J., reportedly of heart problems. He was 76. Jones is best remembered as the polyrhythmic driving force in the John Coltrane Quartet, the most lauded jazz group of the 1960s. That unit revolutionized small-group jazz, freeing improvisatory players from confining rhythmic accompaniment and strict "chord changes" architecture of previous decades. It also brought a keening, spiritual aspect to jazz playing at a time of social unrest in the country. Jones was the youngest of the three "Jones Boys" brothers from Detroit -- alongside pianist Hank and trumpeter/bandleader Thad, also popular jazz artists. They hit the New York scene with a splash in the mid-'50s. Jones achieved success quickly, playing with established stars like Bud Powell, J.J. Johnson, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and others. He joined Coltrane's group in 1960 and stayed in the drum chair for six years. In the years that followed, he led and recorded with his own ensembles. He played even as he grew ill, and appeared at Yoshi's jazz club in San Francisco earlier this month.

Bob Dylan Live 1964, The Bootleg Series Vol. 6; (Album Review)

Dylan: Concert at Philharmonic Hall Bootleg Vol 6: The accompanying booklet is beautiful. I particularly gravitate towards the shot of Dylan, John Sebastian and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot looking at records in the Village. In his right hand Bob holds a copy of the first Stones album. That’s the theme of the concert here, Dylan unveiling his new “more personal” material alongside the earlier, more political stuff (cue Woody Allen’s “Stardust Memories”: Woody gets out of his limo wearing his Fellini shades (that look like Dylan’s ’74 tour shades) and the “fan” says to him: “I like your earlier, funnier stuff.” Woody Guthrie/Woody Woodpecker/Woody Allen). And this is the earlier funnier stuff. I forgot how funny Dylan was in the earlier days, the talkin’ blues “John Birch Society” is hilarious, his asides to the audience “who cares”, the smile you can hear as he strums and fades. The funniest thing is the universal reverence the audience gives the performance. Hushed breaths, polite applause when they recognize a tune-who killed Davey Moore? Well, who was Davey Moore? I’m certainly sorry that he was killed but this track shows the limitations of topical songwriting unless you have Ph.D in postwar American history which was Bob was branching out, showing his “another side” with more personal tunes not to mention “Tambourine man” and “It’s Alright Ma.” The packaging is beautiful, the sound is crisp, the Bob is hot. Good stuff! (Review by: Jim Hayes)

Ambulance LTD: "Primitive” (Legal MP3 Download)

Ambulance's debut "LP" shows exceptional range while being tied together by a sound perhaps best described as "subtly urgent." Some songs boast otherworldly vocals over propulsive guitars and handclaps, while others are creepers that build into a harmony-filled crescendos that echo in your head all day long. Recorded with producer Jim Abbiss, whose credits include Bjork and DJ Shadow. "There's beauty in simplicity -- and that's what Ambulance LTD is about. Their songs are a dreamy sketchbook of thoughts and emotions, but the music is insistently melodic, with poppy allusions to Neil Finn's best work but also to some '60s psychedelia."

Henry Rollins To Visit Middle East

Former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins has confirmed he is to visit troops stationed in the Persian Gulf as part of a USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour. Rollins, known as a singer, author and actor, will fly out to provide a moral boost to troops during May's National Military Appreciation Month, which honours the members of America's armed forces. Last December, the Washington, D.C. native travelled to Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Qatar to "meet and greet" troops in one of the most dangerous regions of combat activity. Best known for his alternative rock/punk music, Rollins began his career with hardcore punk pioneers, Black Flag. He toured and recorded with the group until they disbanded in 1986. The following year, he reappeared with the Rollins Band and a new, more metal-oriented musical direction. In addition to his musical career, Rollins is venturing into acting with appearances in several feature films, including "Bad Boys II,' and 'Morgan's Ferry'. Rollins also is an accomplished spoken word performer, earning a Gr
