Pantera’s ‘Dimebag’ Darrell, four others dead in concert shooting

A gunman who charged onstage during a Wednesday night (12/8) Damageplan concert in Columbus, OH, shot and killed four people–including group co-founder/guitarist Darrell Abbott (a.k.a. Pantera “Dimebag” Darrell)–before a police officer gunned him down, according to local reports. Columbus’ NBC affiliate reported that the incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. at a club named Alrosa Villa. Moments after Damageplan began to perform, a man identified as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, OH, ran on stage and fired four shots at point-blank range at Abbott, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report. The report said that Gale shot and killed another unidentified member of the band before firing shots into the crowd of about 250 people, killing audience members Nathan Bray and Erin Halk. Minutes later, a police officer who was responding to 911 calls reportedly shot and killed Gale. Two other unidentified shooting victims were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Their condition was unknown, according to reports. Abbott founded Damageplan along with his brother and fellow Pantera band member Vinnie Paul (drums). The group, which also featured singer Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, released its debut album, “New Found Power,” earlier this year.
